NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Prima autem sabbatorum Maria Magdalene venit ma ne, cum adhuc tenebraeessent, ad monumentum et videt lapidem sublatum a monumento.1 It was very early on the first day of the week and stil dark, when Mary of Magdala came to the tomb. She saw that the stone had been moved away from the tomb
”.2 and came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. 'They have takenthe Lord out of the tomb,' she said, 'and we don't know where they have put him.'
Exiitergo Petrus et ille alius discipulus, et veniebant ad monumentum.3 So Peter set out with the other disciple to go to the tomb.
Currebantautem duo simul, et ille alius discipulus praecucurrit citius Petro et venitprimus ad monumentum;4 They ran together, but the other disciple, running faster than Peter, reached the tomb first;
et cum se inclinasset, videt posita linteamina, nontamen introivit.5 he bent down and saw the linen cloths lying on the ground, but did not go in.
Venit ergo et Simon Petrus sequens eum et introivit inmonumentum; et videt linteamina posita6 Simon Peter, fol owing him, also came up, went into the tomb, saw the linen cloths lying on the ground
et sudarium, quod fuerat super caputeius, non cum linteaminibus positum, sed separatim involutum in unum locum.7 and also the cloth that had been over his head; this was not with the linen cloths but rolled up in aplace by itself.
Tunc ergo introivit et alter discipulus, qui venerat primus ad monumentum, etvidit et credidit.8 Then the other disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in; he saw and he believed.
Nondum enim sciebant Scripturam, quia oportet eum a mortuisresurgere.9 Til this moment they had stil not understood the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.
Abierunt ergo iterum ad semetipsos discipuli.10 The disciples then went back home.
Maria autemstabat ad monumentum foris plorans. Dum ergo fleret, inclinavit se in monumentum11 But Mary was standing outside near the tomb, weeping. Then, as she wept, she stooped to lookinside,
et videt duos angelos in albis sedentes, unum ad caput et unum ad pedes, ubipositum fuerat corpus Iesu.12 and saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had been, one at the head, the other atthe feet.
Et dicunt ei illi: “ Mulier, quid ploras? ”.Dicit eis: “ Tulerunt Dominum meum, et nescio, ubi posuerunt eum ”.13 They said, 'Woman, why are you weeping?' 'They have taken my Lord away,' she replied, 'and I don'tknow where they have put him.'
Haeccum dixisset, conversa est retrorsum et videt Iesum stantem; et non sciebat quiaIesus est.14 As she said this she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, though she did not realise that itwas Jesus.
Dicit ei Iesus: “ Mulier, quid ploras? Quem quaeris? ”. Illa, existimans quia hortulanus esset, dicit ei: “ Domine, si tu sustulisti eum, dicito mihi, ubi posuisti eum, et ego eum tollam ”.15 Jesus said to her, 'Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?' Supposing him to be thegardener, she said, 'Sir, if you have taken him away, tel me where you have put him, and I will go and removehim.'
Dicit ei Iesus: “Maria! ”. Conversa illa dicit ei Hebraice: “ Rabbuni! ” — quod diciturMagister C.16 Jesus said, 'Mary!' She turned round then and said to him in Hebrew, 'Rabbuni!' -- which meansMaster.
Dicit ei Iesus: “ Iam noli me tenere, nondum enim ascendi adPatrem; vade autem ad fratres meos et dic eis: Ascendo ad Patrem meum et Patremvestrum, et Deum meum et Deum vestrum ”.17 Jesus said to her, 'Do not cling to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to thebrothers, and tell them: I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'
Venit Maria Magdalene annuntiansdiscipulis: “ Vidi Dominum! ”, et quia haec dixit ei.
So Mary of Magdala told the disciples, 'I have seen the Lord,' and that he had said these things toher.
Cum esset ergo sero die illa prima sabbatorum, et fores essent clausae, ubierant discipuli, propter metum Iudaeorum, venit Iesus et stetit in medio etdicit eis: “ Pax vobis! ”.19 In the evening of that same day, the first day of the week, the doors were closed in the room wherethe disciples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, 'Peace be withyou,'
Gavisi sunt ergo discipuli, viso Domino.20 and, after saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy atseeing the Lord,
Dixit ergo eis iterum: “Pax vobis! Sicut misit me Pater, et ego mitto vos ”.21 and he said to them again, 'Peace be with you. 'As the Father sent me, so am I sending you.'
Et cum hoc dixisset, insufflavit et dicit eis: “ Accipite Spiritum Sanctum.22 After saying this he breathed on them and said: Receive the Holy Spirit.
Quorum remiseritispeccata, remissa sunt eis; quorum retinueritis, retenta sunt ”.
If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven; if you retain anyone's sins, they are retained.
Thomas autem, unus ex Duodecim, qui dicitur Didymus, non erat cum eis, quandovenit Iesus.24 Thomas, cal ed the Twin, who was one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.
Dicebant ergo ei alii discipuli: “ Vidimus Dominum! ”.
So the other disciples said to him, 'We have seen the Lord,' but he answered, 'Unless I can see theholes that the nails made in his hands and can put my finger into the holes they made, and unless I can put myhand into his side, I refuse to believe.'
”.26 Eight days later the disciples were in the house again and Thomas was with them. The doors wereclosed, but Jesus came in and stood among them. 'Peace be with you,' he said.
”.27 Then he spoke to Thomas, 'Put your finger here; look, here are my hands. Give me your hand; put itinto my side. Do not be unbelieving any more but believe.'
”.28 Thomas replied, 'My Lord and my God!'
Dicit ei Iesus: “Quia vidisti me, credidisti. Beati, qui non viderunt et crediderunt! ”.
Jesus said to him: You believe because you can see me. Blessed are those who have not seen andyet believe.
Multa quidem et alia signa fecit Iesus in conspectu discipulorum suorum, quaenon sunt scripta in libro hoc;30 There were many other signs that Jesus worked in the sight of the disciples, but they are notrecorded in this book.
These are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and thatbelieving this you may have life through his name.
