1 Haec locutus sum vobis, ut non scandalizemini.	1 "I have said all this to you to keep you from falling away.
2 Absque synagogisfacient vos; sed venit hora, ut omnis, qui interficit vos, arbitretur obsequiumse praestare Deo.	2 They will put you out of the synagogues; indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.
3 Et haec facient, quia non noverunt Patrem neque me.	3 And they will do this because they have not known the Father, nor me.
4 Sedhaec locutus sum vobis, ut, cum venerit hora eorum, reminiscamini eorum, quiaego dixi vobis. Haec autem vobis ab initio non dixi, quia vobiscum eram.	4 But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you of them. "I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.
5 At nunc vado ad eum, qui me misit, et nemo ex vobis interrogat me: “Quovadis?”.	5 But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'
6 Sed quia haec locutus sum vobis, tristitia implevit cor vestrum.	6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts.
7 Sed ego veritatem dico vobis: Expedit vobis, ut ego vadam. Si enim non abiero,Paraclitus non veniet ad vos; si autem abiero, mittam eum ad vos.	7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
8 Et cumvenerit ille, arguet mundum de peccato et de iustitia et de iudicio:	8 And when he comes, he will convince the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
9 depeccato quidem, quia non credunt in me;	9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;
10 de iustitia vero, quia ad Patremvado, et iam non videtis me;	10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more;
11 de iudicio autem, quia princeps mundi huiusiudicatus est.	11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
12 Adhuc multa habeo vobis dicere, sed non potestis portare modo.	12 "I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
13 Cum autemvenerit ille, Spiritus veritatis, deducet vos in omnem veritatem; non enimloquetur a semetipso, sed quaecumque audiet, loquetur et, quae ventura sunt,annuntiabit vobis.	13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
14 Ille me clarificabit, quia de meo accipiet et annuntiabitvobis.	14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
15 Omnia, quaecumque habet Pater, mea sunt; propterea dixi quia de meoaccipit et annuntiabit vobis.	15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
16 Modicum, et iam non videtis me; et iterum modicum, et videbitis me ”.	16 "A little while, and you will see me no more; again a little while, and you will see me."
17 Dixerunt ergo ex discipulis eius ad invicem: “ Quid est hoc, quod dicit nobis:“Modicum, et non videtis me; et iterum modicum, et videbitis me” et: “Vadoad Patrem”? ”.	17 Some of his disciples said to one another, "What is this that he says to us, 'A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'; and, 'because I go to the Father'?"
18 Dicebant ergo: “ Quid est hoc, quod dicit: “Modicum”?Nescimus quid loquitur ”.	18 They said, "What does he mean by 'a little while? We do not know what he means."
19 Cognovit Iesus quia volebant eum interrogare etdixit eis: “ De hoc quaeritis inter vos, quia dixi: “Modicum, et non videtisme; et iterum modicum, et videbitis me”?	19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him; so he said to them, "Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, 'A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me?
20 Amen, amen dico vobis quiaplorabitis et flebitis vos, mundus autem gaudebit; vos contristabimini, sedtristitia vestra vertetur in gaudium.	20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.
21 Mulier, cum parit, tristitiam habet,quia venit hora eius; cum autem pepererit puerum, iam non meminit pressuraepropter gaudium, quia natus est homo in mundum.	21 When a woman is in travail she has sorrow, because her hour has come; but when she is delivered of the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a child is born into the world.
22 Et vos igitur nunc quidemtristitiam habetis; iterum autem videbo vos, et gaudebit cor vestrum, et gaudiumvestrum nemo tollit a vobis.	22 So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.
23 Et in illo die me non rogabitis quidquam. Amen, amen dico vobis: Si quid petieritis Patrem in nomine meo, dabit vobis.	23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father, he will give it to you in my name.
24 Usque modo non petistis quidquam in nomine meo. Petite et accipietis, ut gaudiumvestrum sit plenum.	24 Hitherto you have asked nothing in my name; ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
25 Haec in proverbiis locutus sum vobis; venit hora, cum iamnon in proverbiis loquar vobis, sed palam de Patre annuntiabo vobis.	25 "I have said this to you in figures; the hour is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in figures but tell you plainly of the Father.
26 Illo diein nomine meo petetis, et non dico vobis quia ego rogabo Patrem de vobis;	26 In that day you will ask in my name; and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you;
27 ipse enim Pater amat vos, quia vos me amastis et credidistis quia ego a Deoexivi.	27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from the Father.
28 Exivi a Patre et veni in mundum; iterum relinquo mundum et vado adPatrem ”.	28 I came from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father."
29 Dicunt discipuli eius: “ Ecce nunc palam loqueris, etproverbium nullum dicis.	29 His disciples said, "Ah, now you are speaking plainly, not in any figure!
30 Nunc scimus quia scis omnia, et non opus est tibi,ut quis te interroget; in hoc credimus quia a Deo existi ”.	30 Now we know that you know all things, and need none to question you; by this we believe that you came from God."
31 Respondit eisIesus: “ Modo creditis?	31 Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe?
32 Ecce venit hora et iam venit, ut dispergaminiunusquisque in propria et me solum relinquatis; et non sum solus, quia Patermecum est.	32 The hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, every man to his home, and will leave me alone; yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me.
33 Haec locutus sum vobis, ut in me pacem habeatis; in mundopressuram habetis, sed confidite, ego vici mundum ”.	33 I have said this to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."
