NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
In illis diebus iterum cum turba multa esset nec haberent, quodmanducarent, convocatis discipulis, ait illis:1 And now once again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat. So he cal ed hisdisciples to him and said to them,
“ Misereor super turbam, quiaiam triduo sustinent me nec habent, quod manducent;2 'I feel sorry for al these people; they have been with me for three days now and have nothing to eat.
et si dimisero eos ieiunosin domum suam, deficient in via; et quidam ex eis de longe venerunt ”.3 If I send them off home hungry they wil col apse on the way; some have come a great distance.'
Etresponderunt ei discipuli sui: “ Unde istos poterit quis hic saturare panibusin solitudine? ”.4 His disciples replied, 'Where could anyone get these people enough bread to eat in a deserted place?'
Et interrogabat eos: “ Quot panes habetis? ”. Quidixerunt: “ Septem ”.5 He asked them, 'How many loaves have you?' And they said to him, 'Seven.'
Et praecipit turbae discumbere supra terram; etaccipiens septem panes, gratias agens fregit et dabat discipulis suis, utapponerent; et apposuerunt turbae.6 Then he instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves, and after givingthanks he broke them and began handing them to his disciples to distribute; and they distributed them amongthe crowd.
Et habebant pisciculos paucos; etbenedicens eos, iussit hos quoque apponi.7 They had a few smal fishes as wel , and over these he said a blessing and ordered them to bedistributed too.
They ate as much as they wanted, and they col ected seven basketfuls of the scraps left over.
Erant autemquasi quattuor milia. Et dimisit eos.
Now there had been about four thousand people. He sent them away
Et statim ascendens navem cum discipulis suis venit in partes Dalmanutha.10 and at once, getting into the boat with his disciples, went to the region of Dalmanutha.
Et exierunt pharisaei et coeperunt conquirere cum eo quaerentes ab illo signumde caelo, tentantes eum.11 The Pharisees came up and started a discussion with him; they demanded of him a sign from heaven,to put him to the test.
Et ingemiscens spiritu suo ait: “ Quid generatioista quaerit signum? Amen dico vobis: Non dabitur generationi isti signum ”.12 And with a profound sigh he said, 'Why does this generation demand a sign? In truth I tel you, no signshall be given to this generation.'
Et dimittens eos, iterum ascendens abiit trans fretum.
And, leaving them again, he re-embarked and went away to the other side.
Et obliti sunt sumere panes et nisi unum panem non habebant secum in navi.14 The disciples had forgotten to take any bread and they had only one loaf with them in the boat.
Et praecipiebat eis dicens: “ Videte, cavete a fermento pharisaeorum etfermento Herodis! ”.15 Then he gave them this warning, 'Keep your eyes open; look out for the yeast of the Pharisees andthe yeast of Herod.'
Et disputabant ad invicem, quia panes non haberent.16 And they said to one another, 'It is because we have no bread.'
Quo cognito, ait illis: “ Quid disputatis, quia panes non habetis? Nondumcognoscitis nec intellegitis? Caecatum habetis cor vestrum?17 And Jesus knew it, and he said to them, 'Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you stil notunderstand, stil not realise? Are your minds closed?
Nec recordamini,18 Have you eyes and do not see, ears and do not hear? Or do you not remember?
quando quinquepanes fregi in quinque milia, quot cophinos fragmentorum plenos sustulistis? ”.Dicunt ei: “ Duodecim ”.19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of scraps did you col ect?'They answered, 'Twelve.'
“ Quando illos septem in quattuor milia, quotsportas plenas fragmentorum tulistis? ”. Et dicunt ei: “ Septem ”.20 'And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets ful of scraps did youcol ect?' And they answered, 'Seven.'
Etdicebat eis: “ Nondum intellegitis? ”.
Then he said to them, 'Do you still not realise?'
Et veniunt Bethsaida. Et adducunt ei caecum et rogant eum, ut illum tangat.22 They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought to him a blind man whom they begged him totouch.
”.23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the vil age. Then, putting spittle on his eyesand laying his hands on him, he asked, 'Can you see anything?'
Etaspiciens dicebat: “ Video homines, quia velut arbores video ambulantes ”.24 The man, who was beginning to see, replied, 'I can see people; they look like trees as they walkaround.'
Deinde iterum imposuit manus super oculos eius; et coepit videre etrestitutus est et videbat clare omnia.25 Then he laid his hands on the man's eyes again and he saw clearly; he was cured, and he could seeeverything plainly and distinctly.
Et misit illum in domum suam dicens:“ Nec in vicum introieris ”.
And Jesus sent him home, saying, 'Do not even go into the vil age.'
Et egressus est Iesus et discipuli eius in castella Caesareae Philippi; et invia interrogabat discipulos suos dicens eis: “ Quem me dicunt esse homines?”.27 Jesus and his disciples left for the vil ages round Caesarea Philippi. On the way he put this question tohis disciples, 'Who do people say I am?'
Qui responderunt illi dicentcs: “ Ioannem Baptistam, alii Eliam, aliivero unum de prophetis ”.28 And they told him, 'John the Baptist, others Elijah, others again, one of the prophets.'
”. Respondens Petrus ait ei: “ Tu es Christus ”.29 'But you,' he asked them, 'who do you say I am?' Peter spoke up and said to him, 'You are the Christ.'
And he gave them strict orders not to tell anyone about him.
Et coepit docere illos: “ Oportet Filium hominis multa pati et reprobari asenioribus et a summis sacerdotibus et scribis et occidi et post tres diesresurgere ”;31 Then he began to teach them that the Son of man was destined to suffer grievously, and to berejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and to be put to death, and after three days to riseagain;
et palam verbum loquebatur. Et apprehendens eum Petrus coepitincrepare eum.32 and he said all this quite openly. Then, taking him aside, Peter tried to rebuke him.
But, turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said to him, 'Get behind me, Satan! Youare thinking not as God thinks, but as human beings do.'
Et convocata turba cum discipulis suis, dixit eis: “ Si quis vult post mesequi, deneget semetipsum et tollat crucem suam et sequatur me.34 He called the people and his disciples to him and said, 'If anyone wants to be a fol ower of mine, lethim renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me.
Qui enimvoluerit animam suam salvam facere, perdet eam; qui autem perdiderit animam suampropter me et evangelium, salvam eam faciet.35 Anyone who wants to save his life wil lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, and for thesake of the gospel, wil save it.
Quid enim prodest homini, silucretur mundum totum et detrimentum faciat animae suae?36 What gain, then, is it for anyone to win the whole world and forfeit his life?
Quid enim dabit homocommutationem pro anima sua?37 And indeed what can anyone offer in exchange for his life?
For if anyone in this sinful and adulterous generation is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son ofman wil also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.'
