BIBBIA MARTINI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Grandi sono i tuoi giudizj, o Signore, e ineffabili le opere tue: per questo le anime privo di scienza, caddero in errore.	1 Yes, your judgements are great and impenetrable, which is why uninstructed souls have gone astray.
2 Conciossiachè mentre gli iniqui si persuadono di potere opprimere il popol santo; legati da catone di tenebre, e di lunga notte, chiusi dentro le loro case, giacevano esclusi dalla eterna Previdenza.	2 While the wicked supposed they had a holy nation in their power, they themselves lay prisoners of thedark, in the fetters of long night, confined under their own roofs, banished from eternal providence.
3 E mentre credono di potere restare ascosi coi neri loro peccati, furon disgiunti l'uno dall'altro con tenebroso velo di obblivione, pieni di orrende paure, e turbati da eccessivo sbigottimento.	3 While they thought to remain unnoticed with their secret sins, curtained by dark forgetfulness, theywere scattered in fearful dismay, terrified by apparitions.
4 Conciossiaché i nascondigli dove erano ritirati, non li facevan sicuri, ma erano spauriti dai rumori, che si levavano, e spettri orribili ad essi apparivano, da' quali erano spaventati.	4 The hiding place sheltering them could not ward off their fear; terrifying noises echoed round them;and gloomy, grim-faced spectres haunted them.
5 Né il fuoco per grande, ch'ei fosse, poteva ad essi dar lume, né il chiaro splendor delle stelle poteva dar luce a quella orrenda notte.	5 No fire had power enough to give them light, nor could the brightly blazing stars il uminate that dreadfulnight.
6 Ma un repentino fuoco terribile compariva dinanzi ad essi, e sbalorditi per la paura di que' fantasmi, che mal vedevano, peggiori si figuravan le cose, che comparivano.	6 The only light for them was a great, spontaneous blaze -- a fearful sight to see! And in their terror,once that sight had vanished, they thought what they had seen more terrible than ever.
7 Ed eranvi aggiunti gli scherni dell'arte magica, e i voltamenti di saggezza furon redarguiti con ignominia;	7 Their magical il usions were powerless now, and their claims to intel igence were ignominiouslyconfounded;
8 Perocché quelli, che facevan professione di sbandire dagli animi abbattuti le paure, e i turbamenti, sopraffatti dal timore con lor vitupero languivano;	8 for those who promised to drive out fears and disorders from sick souls were now themselves sick withludicrous fright.
9 Conciossiachè quantunque nulla di mostruoso gli offendesse, al passar, che facevano le bestie, e al fischiar dei serpenti si sbigottivano, e morivano di paura, e avrebbon eletto di non veder l'aria, che da nissuno può evitarsi;	9 Even when there was nothing frightful to scare them, the vermin creeping past and the hissing ofreptiles filled them with panic;
10 Perocché la malvagità essendo paurosa ai condanna colla propria testimonianza: e nella agitata coscienza presagisce cose crudeli.	10 they died convulsed with fright, refusing even to look at empty air, which cannot be eluded anyhow!
11 E il timore altro non è, se non la privazione degli ajuti della ragione.	11 Wickedness is confessedly very cowardly, and it condemns itself; under pressure from conscience italways assumes the worst.
12 E quanto meno dentro di se uno aspetta soccorso, tanto più ingrandisce la ignota cagione, che a lui da tormento.	12 Fear, indeed, is nothing other than the failure of the help offered by reason;
13 Quelli però in quella notte veramente intollerabile, e venuta sopra di loro dall'intimo profondissimo inferno, assopiti dal medesimo sonno,	13 the less you rely within yourself on this, the more alarming it is not to know the cause of yoursuffering.
14 Ora dal timor degli spettri erano agitati, ora venivan meno per l'abbattimento dell'animo; sorpresi da subitaneo, e inaspettato terrore.	14 And they, al locked in the same sleep, while that darkness lasted -- which was in fact quite powerlessand had issued from the depths of equal y powerless Hades-
15 Che se alcuno di quelli fosse venuto a cadere, ivi si stava rinchiuso, e serrato in prigione senza catene di ferro.	15 were now chased by monstrous spectres, now paralysed by the fainting of their souls; for a sudden,unexpected terror had attacked them.
16 Imperocché o fosse egli un contadino, od un pastore, o mercenario, che lavorasse alla campagna, si trovava involto da quella insuperabile necessità;	16 And thus, whoever it might be that fel there stayed clamped to the spot in this prison without bars.
17 Conciossiaché tutti erano avvinti dalla stessa catena di tenebre. E il susurrare de' venti, e il canto soave degli uccelli trai folti rami degli alberi, e il precipitoso impeto dell'acqua corrente,	17 Whether he was ploughman or shepherd, or somebody at work in the desert, he was stil overtakenand suffered the inevitable fate, for al had been bound by the one same chain of darkness.
18 E il forte romore de' sassi cadenti, e il correre dei non veduti animali, che scherzavano, e il forte suono delle bestie, che urlavano, e l'eco da' monti altissimi ripercosso li facean venir meno per lo spavento.	18 The soughing of the wind, the tuneful noise of birds in the spreading branches, the measured beat ofwater in its powerful course, the headlong din of rocks cascading down,
19 Conciossiaché il mondo tutto da luce chiarissima era illuminato, ed era occupato senza impedimento ne' suoi lavori.	19 the unseen course of bounding animals, the roaring of the most savage of wild beasts, the echorebounding from the clefts in the mountains, all held them paralysed with fear.
20 Sopra quelli soli posava gravosa notte, immagine di quelle tenebre, che dipoi gli aspettavano; per la qual cosa eran eglino più insopportabili a loro stessi, che quelle tenebre.	20 For the whole world shone with the light of day and, unhindered, went about its work;
	21 over them alone there spread a heavy darkness, image of the dark that would receive them. Butheavier than the darkness was the burden they were to themselves.
