1 Or Simone inteso come Trifone avea radunato un grosso esercito per entrare nella terra di Giuda, e desolarla.	1 Now when Simon heard that Tryphon had gathered together a great host to invade the land of Judea, and destroy it,
2 E veggendo come la gente era impaurito e tremante, andò a Gerusalemme, e convocò tutto il popolo:	2 And saw that the people was in great trembling and fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and gathered the people together,
3 E gli animò, e disse: Voi sapete quanto e io e i miei fratelli, e la casa del padre mio abbiam combattuto per la legge e pel santuario, e in quali angustie ci siamo trovati.	3 And gave them exhortation, saying, Ye yourselves know what great things I, and my brethren, and my father's house, have done for the laws and the sanctuary, the battles also and troubles which we have seen.
4 Per questa causa perirono tutti i miei fratelli per Israele, e son rimaso io solo.	4 By reason whereof all my brethren are slain for Israel's sake, and I am left alone.
5 Or non sia mai, che io abbia riguardo alla mia vita in qualunque tempo di afflizione; perocchè non son io da più che i miei fratelli.	5 Now therefore be it far from me, that I should spare mine own life in any time of trouble: for I am no better than my brethren.
6 Io adunque difenderò il mio popolo e il santuario e i nostri figliuoli e le nostre mogli, or che tutte le genti per l'odio, che portano a noi, si uniscono alla nostra distruzione.	6 Doubtless I will avenge my nation, and the sanctuary, and our wives, and our children: for all the heathen are gathered to destroy us of very malice.
7 A queste parole si infiammò lo spirito del popolo;	7 Now as soon as the people heard these words, their spirit revived.
8 E ad alta voce risposero: Tu se' nostro condottiere in luogo di Giuda e di Gionata tuoi fratelli:	8 And they answered with a loud voice, saying, Thou shalt be our leader instead of Judas and Jonathan thy brother.
9 Combatti per noi, e faremo tutto quello che ci conanderai.	9 Fight thou our battles, and whatsoever, thou commandest us, that will we do.
10 Ed egli, messi insieme tutti gli uomini sperimentati nel mestiere dell'armi, fece terminare con tutta sollecitudine le mura di Gerusalemme, e fortificolla da tutte le parti.	10 So then he gathered together all the men of war, and made haste to finish the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about.
11 E mandò Gionata figliuolo di Absalom a Joppe con nuove schiere, e cacciati quelli che vi eran dentro, si fermò egli colà.	11 Also he sent Jonathan the son of Absolom, and with him a great power, to Joppa: who casting out them that were therein remained there in it.
12 E Trifone parti con grosso esercito da Tolemaide per entrare nella Giudea, e con lui Gionata prigioniero.	12 So Tryphon removed from Ptolemaus with a great power to invade the land of Judea, and Jonathan was with him in ward.
13 E Simone si avvicinò ad Addus dirimpetto alla pianura.	13 But Simon pitched his tents at Adida, over against the plain.
14 Ma avendo inteso Trifone, come in luogo di Gionata era subentrato il suo fratello Simone, e che questi volea venir seco a battaglia, mandò a lui ambasciadori,	14 Now when Tryphon knew that Simon was risen up instead of his brother Jonathan, and meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers unto him, saying,
15 Perché gli dicessero: Abbiam ritenuto Gionata tuo fratello per ragion del denaro, di cui era debitore alla cassa del re, a titolo del negozi, che egli amministrano.	15 Whereas we have Jonathan thy brother in hold, it is for money that he is owing unto the king's treasure, concerning the business that was committed unto him.
16 Or tu manda cento talenti d'argento, e i due suoi figliuoli in ostaggio, affinché messo in libertà non abbandoni il nostro partito, e noi lo rimanderemo.	16 Wherefore now send an hundred talents of silver, and two of his sons for hostages, that when he is at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will let him go.
17 E Simone ben comprese, che quegli parlava seco con fraude: con tutto questo ordinò, che si desse il denaro e i fanciulli, per non tirarsi addosso la malevoglienza del popolo d'Israele, che direbbe:	17 Hereupon Simon, albeit he perceived that they spake deceitfully unto him yet sent he the money and the children, lest peradventure he should procure to himself great hatred of the people:
18 Perché egli non ha mandato il denaro e i fanciulli, per questo Gionata è morto.	18 Who might have said, Because I sent him not the money and the children, therefore is Jonathan dead.
19 Ed egli mandò i fanciulli e i cento talenti: ma quegli mancò di parola, e non rimandò Gionata.	19 So he sent them the children and the hundred talents: howbeit Tryphon dissembled neither would he let Jonathan go.
20 E dipoi Trifone entrò nel paese per devastarlo: e si volsero a prendere la strada, che mena ad Ador, e Simone col suo esercito li seguitavano dovunque andassero.	20 And after this came Tryphon to invade the land, and destroy it, going round about by the way that leadeth unto Adora: but Simon and his host marched against him in every place, wheresoever he went.
21 Ma quelli che erano nella cittadella mandarono a dire a Trifone, che venisse con sollecitudine dalla parte del deserto, e mandasse loro de' viveri.	21 Now they that were in the tower sent messengers unto Tryphon, to the end that he should hasten his coming unto them by the wilderness, and send them victuals.
22 E Trifone mise in ordine tutta la cavalleria per partir quella notte: ma essendo la neve in grandissima copia, egli non entrò nel paese di Galaad.	22 Wherefore Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night: but there fell a very great snow, by reason whereof he came not. So he departed, and came into the country of Galaad.
23 Ma avvicinandosi a Bascaman, ivi uccise Gionata e i suoi figliuoli.	23 And when he came near to Bascama he slew Jonathan, who was buried there.
24 E Trifone si voltò indietro, e se ne andò al suo paese.	24 Afterward Tryphon returned and went into his own land.
25 E Simone mandò a prendere le ossa di Gionata suo fratello, e le seppellì in Modin patria de' loro padri.	25 Then sent Simon, and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modin, the city of his fathers.
26 E tutto Israele menò gran duolo per lui, e lo piansero per molto tempo.	26 And all Israel made great lamentation for him, and bewailed him many days.
27 E Simone sopra il sepolcro del padre suo e dei suoi fratelli, alzò una fabbrica alta un'occhiata, di pietra tagliata nel dinanzi e nel di dietro:	27 Simon also built a monument upon the sepulchre of his father and his brethren, and raised it aloft to the sight, with hewn stone behind and before.
28 E vi collocò sette piramidi, l'una di rimpetto all'altra, al padre, alla madre e ai quattro fratelli:	28 Moreover he set up seven pyramids, one against another, for his father, and his mother, and his four brethren.
29 E intorno ad esse pose delle grandi colonne; e sopra le colonne pose delle armi per eterna memoria; e presso alle armi, delle navi scolpite, le quali si vedessero da tutti quelli che navigassero per quel mare.	29 And in these he made cunning devices, about the which he set great pillars, and upon the pillars he made all their armour for a perpetual memory, and by the armour ships carved, that they might be seen of all that sail on the sea.
30 Tale e' il sepolcro edificato da lui in Modin, che si vede anche in oggi.	30 This is the sepulchre which he made at Modin, and it standeth yet unto this day.
31 Ma Trifone essendo in viaggio col giovinetto re Antioco, lo uccise con inganno.	31 Now Tryphon dealt deceitfully with the young king Antiochus, and slew him.
32 E regnò in sua vece, e si cinse il diodema dell'Asia, e riempiè il paese di stragi.	32 And he reigned in his stead, and crowned himself king of Asia, and brought a great calamity upon the land.
33 Ma Simone ristorò le fortezze della Giudea, e le rinforzo con alle torri e salde mura e porte e sbarre; e mise viveri nelle fortezze.	33 Then Simon built up the strong holds in Judea, and fenced them about with high towers, and great walls, and gates, and bars, and laid up victuals therein.
34 E Simone mandò deputati al re Demetrio per pregarlo di concedere l'immunità al paese; perocchè tutti gli alti di Trifone erano stati tanti ladrocinj.	34 Moreover Simon chose men, and sent to king Demetrius, to the end he should give the land an immunity, because all that Tryphon did was to spoil.
35 E il re Demetrio rispose alla domanda, e scrisse lettera di tal tenore:	35 Unto whom king Demetrius answered and wrote after this manner:
36 Il re Demetrio a Simone sommo Sacerdote e amico dei re, e ai seniori e al popolo de' Giudei, salute.	36 King Demetrius unto Simon the high priest, and friend of kings, as also unto the elders and nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:
37 Abbiam ricevuto la corona d'oro e la palma mandata da voi; e siamo disposti a far con voi buona pace, e a scrivere agli agenti del re di condonarvi quello che noi vi abbiom condonato.	37 The golden crown, and the scarlet robe, which ye sent unto us, we have received: and we are ready to make a stedfast peace with you, yea, and to write unto our officers, to confirm the immunities which we have granted.
38 Perocchè debb' esser rato tutto quello, che vi abbiam conceduto: le fortezze edificate da voi sieno vostre.	38 And whatsoever covenants we have made with you shall stand; and the strong holds, which ye have builded, shall be your own.
39 Vi rimettiamo eziandio i mancamenti e i torti fino a questi dì, e la corona, di cui eravate debitori: e se altra gravezza si pagava in Gerusalemme, omai cessi.	39 As for any oversight or fault committed unto this day, we forgive it, and the crown tax also, which ye owe us: and if there were any other tribute paid in Jerusalem, it shall no more be paid.
40 E se havvi tra voi chi sia capace di esser arruolato nelle nostre milizie, si arruoli, e sia tra noi pace.	40 And look who are meet among you to be in our court, let then be enrolled, and let there be peace betwixt us.
41 L'anno cento settanta Israele scosse il giogo dei Greci.	41 Thus the yoke of the heathen was taken away from Israel in the hundred and seventieth year.
42 E il popolo d'Israele cominciò a contare nè monumenti e negli atti pubblici dall'anno primo sotto Simone sommo Sacerdote, gran condottiero e principe dei Giudei.	42 Then the people of Israel began to write in their instruments and contracts, In the first year of Simon the high priest, the governor and leader of the Jews.
43 In quel tempo Simone si accostò a Gaza, e la circondò coll'esercito, e alzò le macchine, e le spinse contro la città, e batte una torre, e la prese.	43 In those days Simon camped against Gaza and besieged it round about; he made also an engine of war, and set it by the city, and battered a certain tower, and took it.
44 E quelli che stavano in una delle macchine entrarono con furia nella città; e questa fu in gran tumulto.	44 And they that were in the engine leaped into the city; whereupon there was a great uproar in the city:
45 E i cittadini salirono colle moglie coi figliuoli sulle mura, stracciate le vesti, e gridavano ad alta voce pregando Simone a dar loro la pace,	45 Insomuch as the people of the city rent their clothes, and climbed upon the walls with their wives and children, and cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace.
46 E dicevano: Non voler trattarci secondo la nostra malvagità, ma secondo la tua clemenza.	46 And they said, Deal not with us according to our wickedness, but according to thy mercy.
47 E Simone si lasciò piegare, e non li punì; ma però li cacciò dalla città, e purificò le case, dove erano stati simulacri: e poi vi entrò dentro cantando inni in lode del Signore.	47 So Simon was appeased toward them, and fought no more against them, but put them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein the idols were, and so entered into it with songs and thanksgiving.
48 E toltone tutte le immondezze, la fece abitare da gente che osservasse la legge, e la fortificò, e vi fece una casa per sè.	48 Yea, he put all uncleanness out of it, and placed such men there as would keep the law, and made it stronger than it was before, and built therein a dwellingplace for himself.
49 Ma quelli, che stavano nella cittadella di Gerusalemme non potendo andare, e stare pel paese, ne vendere, né comprare, si ridussero a una gran carestia, e molti di essi moriron di fame.	49 They also of the tower in Jerusalem were kept so strait, that they could neither come forth, nor go into the country, nor buy, nor sell: wherefore they were in great distress for want of victuals, and a great number of them perished through famine.
50 E gridavano a Simone, che desse loro la pace; ed egli la concesse; e cacciolti di là, e purficò la cittadella dalle immondezze.	50 Then cried they to Simon, beseeching him to be at one with them: which thing he granted them; and when he had put them out from thence, he cleansed the tower from pollutions:
51 E i Giudei vi entraron dentro ai ventitre del secondo mese, l'anno cento settant'uno con rami di palme, e cantando laude al suono di arpe cimbali, e lire, con inni e cantici perché era stato tolto via un nemico grande d'Israele.	51 And entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month in the hundred seventy and first year, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and with harps, and cymbals, and with viols, and hymns, and songs: because there was destroyed a great enemy out of Israel.
52 E Simone ordinò, che si solennizzassero ogni anno quei giorni con gaudio.	52 He ordained also that that day should be kept every year with gladness. Moreover the hill of the temple that was by the tower he made stronger than it was, and there he dwelt himself with his company.
53 E fortificò il monte del tempio, che era presso alla cittadella, e ivi abitò egli coi suoi.	53 And when Simon saw that John his son was a valiant man, he made him captain of all the hosts; and he dwelt in Gazera.
54 E Simone avendo riconosciuto, che Giovanni suo figliuolo era uomo di gran valore, lo creò capitano di tutte le schiere, ed egli facea residenza a Gazara.
