1 E Gionata vedendo, che il tempo era favorevole, elesse deputati per mandargli a Roma a stabilire e rinnovar l'amicizia.	1 When Jonathan saw that the times favored him, he sent selected men to Rome to confirm and renew his friendship with the Romans.
2 Similmente agli Sparziati e ad altri potentati scrisse lettere dello stesso tenore.	2 He also sent letters to Sparta and other places for the same purpose.
3 E quegli andarono a Roma, ed entrati nella Curia, dissero: Gionata sommo Sacerdote e la nazione dei Giudei ci hanno mandati a rinnovare l'amicizia e la confederazione, quale ella è stata per la passato.	3 After reaching Rome, the men entered the senate chamber and said, "The high priest Jonathan and the Jewish people have sent us to renew the earlier friendship and alliance between you and them."
4 E (i Romani) diedero ad essi lettere pe' loro presidi d'un luogo all'altro, affinché li facesser condurre con sicurezza nella terra di Giuda.	4 The Romans gave them letters addressed to the authorities in the various places, requesting them to provide the envoys with safe conduct to the land of Judah.
5 Or ecco la copia della lettera scritta da Gionata agli Sparziati:	5 This is a copy of the letter that Jonathan wrote to the Spartans:
6 Gionata sommo Sacerdote e i seniori della nazione e i sacerdoti e tutto il popolo dei Giudei, agli Sparziati fratelli, salute.	6 "Jonathan the high priest, the senate of the nation, the priests, and the rest of the Jewish people send greetings to their brothers the Spartans.
7 È già tempo, che fu scritta lettera da Ario, che regnava tra voi a Onia sommo Sacerdote, nella quale si dicea come voi siete nostri fratelli, come lo dimostra la copia, che qui sotto si riferirà.	7 Long ago a letter was sent to the high priest Onias from Arius, who then reigned over you, stating that you are our brothers, as the attached copy shows.
8 E Onia accolse onorevolmente il messo e le lettere, nelle quali si trattava di fare amicizia e confederazione.	8 Onias welcomed the envoy with honor and received the letter, which clearly referred to alliance and friendship.
9 Noi non avendo bisogno di nissuna di queste cose, perchè abbiamo per nostra consolazione i libri santi a che sono nelle nostre mani,	9 Though we have no need of these things, since we have for our encouragement the sacred books that are in our possession,
10 Abbiam voluto nulladimeno mandar a voi deputati per rinovellare la fraternità e l'amicizia, affinché non accada, che noi diventiamo stranieri a voi; perocchè gran tempo è trascorso dopo che voi mandaste a visitarci.	10 we have ventured to send word to you for the renewal of brotherhood and friendship, so as not to become strangers to you altogether; a long time has passed since your mission to us.
11 Noi però in ogni tempo non abbiam mai tralasciato nè giorni solenni e negli altri tempi quando convien di farlo, di far commemorazione di voi nè sacrifizj; che da noi sono offerti, e nelle orazioni, come è giusto e convenevole di aver memoria de' fratelli.	11 We, on our part, have never ceased to remember you in the sacrifices and prayers that we offer on our feasts and other appropriate days, as it is right and proper to remember brothers.
12 Or noi ci rallegriamo della vostra gloria.	12 We likewise rejoice in your renown.
13 Ma noi siamo stati circondati da molte tribolazioni e guerre; e i re circonvicini ci hanno vessati.	13 But many hardships and wars have beset us, and the kings around us have attacked us.
14 Noi adunque non abbiam voluto in queste guerre recar molestia a voi, né agli altri confederati e amici nostri:	14 We did not wish to be troublesome to you and to the rest of our allies and friends in these wars;
15 Perocchè noi abbiam ricevuto soccorso dal cielo, e siamo stati liberati, e son rimasi svergognati i nostri nemici.	15 with the help of Heaven for our support, we have been saved from our enemies, and they have been humbled.
16 Ma avendo noi eletto Numenio figliuolo' di Antioco, e Antipatro figliuolo di Giasone per mandargli ai Romani a rinnovar con essi l'amicizia e la confederazione antica,	16 So we have chosen Numenius, son of Antiochus, and Antipater, son of Jason, and we have sent them to the Romans to renew our former friendship and alliance with them.
17 Abbiam data ad essi commissione di venir anche da voi a salutarvi, e a portarvi questa nostra lettera, che ha per fine di rinnovellare la nostra fraternità.	17 We have also ordered them to come to you and greet you, and to deliver to you our letter about the renewal of our brotherhood.
18 Or voi ben farete rispondendo a noi sopra tali cose.	18 Therefore kindly send us an answer on this matter."
19 E questa è la copia della lettera scritta ad Onia:	19 This is a copy of the letter that was sent to Onias:
20 Ario re degli Sparziati, ad Onia sommo Sacerdote, salute.	20 "Arius, king of the Spartans, sends greetings to Onias the high priest.
21 Si è trovato in certa scrittura, che gli sparziali e i Giudei sono fratelli, e sono della stirpe d'Abramo.	21 A document has been found stating that the Spartans and the Jews are brothers; both nations descended from Abraham.
22 Or dacchè noi abbiamo scoperta tal cosa, voi farete bene a scriverci, se siate in pace.	22 Now that we have learned this, kindly write to us about your welfare.
23 E noi pure scriviamo a voi: I nostri bestiami e le nostre possessioni sono vostre, e nostre sono le vostre: queste cose adunque abbiamo dato commissione di far sapere a voi.	23 We, on our part, are informing you that your cattle and your possessions are ours, and ours are yours. We have, therefore, given orders that you should be told of this."
24 Or Gionata seppe come i capitani di Demetrio eran tornati con esercito maggior di prima per assalirlo:	24 Jonathan heard that the generals of Demetrius had returned to attack him with a stronger army than before.
25 Ed egli parti da Gerusalemme, e andò ad incontrarti nel paese di Amath; perocchè non avea dato loro il tempo di metter piede nel suo paese.	25 He set out from Jerusalem and went into the country of Hamath to meet them, giving them no time to enter his province.
26 E mandò delle spie nel loro campo, le quali tornarono a dirgli, che quelli avean risoluto di coglierlo all'improvviso quella notte.	26 The spies he had sent into their camp came back and reported that the enemy had made ready to attack the Jews that very night.
27 Or tramontata che fu il sole, Gionata ordinò ai suoi di vegliare, e di stare coll'armi in ordine per la battaglia tutta la notte, e pose sentinelle intorno al quartiere.	27 Therefore, when the sun set, Jonathan ordered his men to be on guard and to remain armed, ready for combat, throughout the night. He also set outposts all around the camp.
28 Ma i nemici avendo risaputo come Giornata era colla sua gente in ordine per la battaglia, ebber timore, e perderon coraggio, e acceser de' fuochi nel loro campo.	28 When the enemy heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, their hearts sank with fear and dread. They lighted fires and then withdrew.
29 E Gionata e i suoi non si accorsero del fatto fino alla mattina, oeggendo quei fuochi accesi:	29 But because Jonathan and his men were watching the lights burning, they did not know what had happened until morning.
30 E Gionata andò dietro ad essi, e non li raggiunse; perocchè avean passato il fiume Eleuthero.	30 Then Jonathan pursued them, but he could not overtake them, for they had crossed the river Eleutherus.
31 E Gionata piegò verso gli Arabi detti Zabadei, e gli sconfisse, e prese le loro spoglie.	31 So Jonathan turned aside against the Arabs who are called Zabadeans, overwhelming and plundering them.
32 E riuniti i suoi andò a Damasco, e andava attorno per tutto quel paese.	32 Then he marched on to Damascus and traversed that whole region.
33 E Simone partì, e andò fino ad Ascalon e alle vicine fortezze; e si voltò verso Joppe, e la occupò.	33 Simon also set out and went as far as Ashkalon and its neighboring strongholds. He then turned to Joppa and occupied it,
34 Perocche' aveva inteso come quelli volevano rimettere la fortezza alle genti di Demetrio: ond'egli vi mise presidio, che la custodisse.	34 for he heard that its men had intended to hand over this stronghold to the supporters of Demetrius. He left a garrison there to guard it.
35 E Gionata al suo ritorno convocò i seniori del popolo, e risolvè con essi di fabbricare delle cittadella nella Giudea,	35 When Jonathan returned, he assembled the elders of the people, and with them he made plans for building strongholds in Judea,
36 E di riedificare le mura di Gerusalemme, e di alzare un muro altissimo in mezzo tralla cittadella e la città per separar quella dalla città, affinché restasse isolata, e quelli non potessero nè comprare, nè vendere:	36 for making the walls of Jerusalem still higher, and for erecting a high barrier between the citadel and the city, that would isolate the citadel and so prevent its garrison from commerce with the city.
37 E si adunò la gente per fabbricare attorno alla città; e cadde la muraglia, che era lungo il torrente da levante: ed egli ristorò il muro chiamato Caphetetha:	37 The people therefore worked together on building up the city, for part of the east wall above the ravine had collapsed. The quarter called Chaphenatha was also repaired.
38 E Simone fabbricò, Adiada in Sephela, e la fortificò e vi pose le porte e le sbarre.	38 Simon likewise built up Adida in the Shephelah, and strengthened its fortifications by providing them with gates and bars.
39 Ma Trifone avendo disegnato di farsi re dell'Asia, e di prendere il diadema, e di porre le mani addosso al re Antioco:	39 Trypho was determined to become king of Asia, assume the crown, and do away with King Antiochus.
40 Temendo, che Gionata non gli fosse di ostacolo, e anzi gli facesse guerra, cercava di averlo nelle mani e ucciderlo: quindi si mosse, e andò a Bethsan.	40 But he was afraid that Jonathan would not permit him, but would fight against him. Looking for a way to seize and kill him, he set out and reached Beth-shan.
41 E Gionata gli andò incontro con quaranta mila guerrieri scelti,e giunse a Bethsan.	41 Jonathan marched out against him with forty thousand picked fighting men and came to Beth-shan.
42 Ma veggendo Trifone, che Gionata era venuto con grosso esercito per assalirlo, ebbe paura.	42 But when Trypho saw that Jonathan had arrived with a large army he was afraid to offer him violence.
43 E lo accolse onorevolmente, e lo raccomandò a tutti i suoi amici, e gli fece dei regali, e ordinò ai suoi eserciti, che obbedissero a lui come a se stesso.	43 Instead, he received him with honor, introduced him to all his friends, and gave him presents. He also ordered his friends and soldiers to obey him as they would himself.
44 E disse a Gionata: Per qual motivo hai tu incomodata tutta la tua gente, mentre noi non abbiam guerra?	44 Then he said to Jonathan: "Why have you put all your soldiers to so much trouble when we are not at war?
45 Or tu rimandagli alle case loro, e scegli un piccol numero d'uomini, che restin teco, e vieni meco a Tolemaide, e io te ne farò padrone, come degli altri presidj e delle milizie e di tutte le persone del governo, e me ne ritornerò in dietro; perocchè a questo fine son venuto.	45 Pick out a few men to stay with you, send the rest back home, and then come with me to Ptolemais. I will hand it over to you together with other strongholds and their garrisons, as well as the officials, then I will leave and go home. That is why I came here."
46 E quegli prestogli fede, e fece come egli avea detto; e licenziò i soldati, i quali se n'andarono nel paese di Giuda.	46 Jonathan believed him and did as he said. He dismissed his troops, and they returned to the land of Judah.
47 E ritenne seco tre mila uomini; dei quali ne rimando due mila nella Galilea, e mille andaron con lui.	47 But he kept with him three thousand men, of whom he sent two thousand to Galilee while one thousand accompanied him.
48 Ma appena ebbe Gionata messo il piede in Tolemaide, que' cittadini chiuser le porte della città, e lo fecero prigione, e messer a fil di spada tutti quelli che erano venuti dentro con lui.	48 Then as soon as Jonathan had entered Ptolemais, the men of the city closed the gates and seized him; all who had entered with him, they killed with the sword.
49 E Trifone mandò un esercito e la cavalleria nella Galileo e nella pianura grande per isterminar tutti quelli che aveano accompagnato Gionata.	49 Trypho sent soldiers and cavalry to Galilee and the Great Plain to destroy all Jonathan's men.
50 Ma quelli avendo saputo, come Gionata era stato preso, e messo a morte con tutti quelli che eran con lui, si esortarono gli uni gli altri, e si mossero pronti a venir alle mani.	50 These, upon learning that Jonathan had been captured and his companions killed, encouraged one another and went out in compact body ready to fight.
51 Or quelli che erano andati in traccia di essi, veggendoli disposti a far tutto per la loro vita, tornarono indietro:	51 As their pursuers saw that they were ready to fight for their lives, they turned back.
52 E quelli se ne tornarono tutti salvi nella Giudea: e piansero grandemente Gionata e i suoi compagni; e Israele meno gran duolo.	52 Thus all these men of Jonathan came safely into the land of Judah. They mourned over Jonathan and his men, and were in great fear, and all Israel fell into deep mourning.
53 E tutte le circonvicine nazioni cercavano di abbatterli; perocchè dicevano.	53 All the nations round about sought to destroy them. They said, "Now that they have no leader to help them, let us make war on them and wipe out their memory from among men."
54 Ei non han condottiero, ne chi gli aiuti: adesso pertanto sterminiamoli, e si cancelli il loro nome dalla memoria degli uomini.
