1 I Filistei, presa l'arca di Dio, dalla Pietra del soccorso la trasportarono in Azoto.	1 The Philistines, having captured the ark of God, transferred it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.
2 Presa adunque l'arca di Dio, i Filistei la portarono nel tempio di Dagon, e la collocarono vicino a Dagon.	2 They then took the ark of God and brought it into the temple of Dagon, placing it beside Dagon.
3 Ma il giorno dopo, alzatisi quelli di Azoto allo spuntar del giorno, ecco Dagon a giacere bocconi per terra dinanzi all'arca del Signore. Allora, preso Dagon, lo rimisero al suo posto.	3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next morning, Dagon was lying prone on the ground before the ark of the LORD. So they picked Dagon up and replaced him.
4 Ma alzatisi la mattina seguente, trovaron di nuovo Dagon a giacere bocconi per terra dinanzi all'arca del Signore: la testa di Dagon e le due palme delle sue mani, troncate, eran sulla soglia,	4 But the next morning early, when they arose, Dagon lay prone on the ground before the ark of the LORD, his head and hands broken off and lying on the threshold, his trunk alone intact.
5 e non era rimasto al suo posto altro che il torso di Dagon. Per questo motivo i sacerdoti di Dagon e tutti quelli che entrano nel suo tempio in Azoto, non ne calcano la soglia fino al giorno d'oggi.	5 For this reason, neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter the temple of Dagon tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this very day; they always step over it.
6 Ma la mano del Signore si aggravò sopra quelli di Azoto e li desolò e li percosse nella parte più segreta delle natiche, in Azoto e nei suoi confini. E i villaggi e i campi di quella regione ribollirono, e nacquero dei topi, e nella città a causa della grande mortalità regnò la confusione.	6 Now the LORD dealt severely with the people of Ashdod. He ravaged and afflicted the city and its vicinity with hemorrhoids; he brought upon the city a great and deadly plague of mice that swarmed in their ships and overran their fields.
7 Vedendo questo flagello, quelli di Azoto dissero: « Non resti presso di noi l'arca del Dio d'Israele, perchè la sua mano pesa sopra di noi e sopra Dagon nostro dio ».	7 On seeing how matters stood, the men of Ashdod decided, "The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us, for he is handling us and our god Dagon severely."
8 E, mandata della gente, adunarono presso di loro tutti i satrapi dei Filistei, e dissero: « Che dobbiamo far noi dell'arca del Dio d'Israele? » E quei di Get risposero: « Si meni attorno l'arca del Dio d'Israele ». E menarono attorno l'rca del Dio d'Israele.	8 So they summoned all the Philistine lords and inquired of them, "What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?" The men of Gath replied, "Let them move the ark of the God of Israel on to us."
9 Ma mentre la menavano in giro, la mano del Signore faceva in ciascuna città una strage oltremodo grande, e percuoteva dal piccolo al grande gli uomini di ciascuna città: uscivano loro fuori gl'intestini, e s'imputridivano. A Bora i Getei, tenuto consiglio, si fecero dei sedili di pelli, e inviarono l'arca di Dio in Accaron. ù	9 So they moved the ark of the God of Israel to Gath! But after it had been brought there, the LORD threw the city into utter turmoil: he afflicted its inhabitants, young and old, and hemorrhoids broke out on them.
10 ma arrivata che fu in Accaron l'arca di Dio, gli gl Accaroniti gridarono e dissero: « Ha anno condotto da noi l'arca del Dio d'Israele, perchè uccida noi e il nostro popolo! »	10 The ark of God was next sent to Ekron; but as it entered that city, the people there cried out, "Why have they brought the ark of the God of Israel here to kill us and our kindred?"
11 E, mandata della gente, adunarono tutti i satrapi dei Filistei, i quali dissero: « Rimandate l'arca del Dio d'Israele, che ritorni al suo posto e non uccida noi e il nostro popolo ».	11 Then they, too, sent a summons to all the Philistine lords and pleaded: "Send away the ark of the God of Israel. Let it return to its own place, that it may not kill us and our kindred." A deadly panic had seized the whole city, since the hand of God had been very heavy upon it.
12 Un terrore di morte si spandeva infatti per ogni città, e la mano di Dio si faceva oltremodo pesante; ed anche gli uomini che non eran morti, venivan percossi nelle parti più segrete delle natiche, e l'urlo di ciascuna città saliva fino al cielo.	12 Those who escaped death were afflicted with hemorrhoids, and the outcry from the city went up to the heavens.
