| 1 Del rimanente, o fratelli, vi preghiamo e scongiuriamo nel Signore Gesù che, avendo da noi appreso in qual modo dobbiate diportarvi per piacere a Dio, così vi diportiate, affinchè progrediate sempre più. | 1 Finally, brethren, we beseech and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you learned from us how you ought to live and to please God, just as you are doing, you do so more and more. |
| 2 Voi sapete quali precetti v'abbia dato da parte del Signore Gesù. | 2 For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. |
| 3 Or la volontà di Dio è questa: la vostra santificazione; e che v'asteniate dalla fornicazione, | 3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from unchastity; |
| 4 che sappia ciascuno di noi essere padrone del proprio corpo nella santità e nell'onestà, | 4 that each one of you know how to take a wife for himself in holiness and honor, |
| 5 senza farsi dominare dalla concupiscenza, come fanno i Gentili che non conoscono Dio; | 5 not in the passion of lust like heathen who do not know God; |
| 6 e che nessuno ricorra a soperchierie o a frodi nei negozi col proprio fratello, perchè il Signore fa giustizia di tutte queste cose, come vi abbiamo già detto e dichiarato, | 6 that no man transgress, and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we solemnly forewarned you. |
| 7 non avendoci Dio chiamati all'immondezza, ma alla santità. | 7 For God has not called us for uncleanness, but in holiness. |
| 8 Pertanto chi di tali cose non fa caso, disprezza non un uomo, ma Dio, il quale ci ha anche dato il suo santo Spirito. | 8 Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you. |
| 9 Intorno alla carità fraterna non c'è bisogno di scrivervi, perchè voi stessi avete imparato da Dio ad amarvi scambievolmante, | 9 But concerning love of the brethren you have no need to have any one write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another; |
| 10 e lo fate veramente per tutti i fratelli in tutta la Macedonia; ma noi vi esortiamo, o fratelli, a farlo sempre più, | 10 and indeed you do love all the brethren throughout Macedonia. But we exhort you, brethren, to do so more and more, |
| 11 e ad avere l'ambizione di vivere in pace, di badare ai fatti vostri, di lavorare colle vostre mani, come vi abbiamo inculcato, per vivere con decoro davanti agli estranei e per non aver bisogno di nessuno. | 11 to aspire to live quietly, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we charged you; |
| 12 Ora non vogliamo, o fratelli, che siate nell'ignoranza riguardo a quelli che dormono, affinchè non vi rattristiate come gli altri che sono senza speranza; | 12 so that you may command the respect of outsiders, and be dependent on nobody. |
| 13 perchè se crediamo che Gesù è morto e risuscitato, dobbiamo anche credere che Dio nello stesso modo ricondurrà con Gesù tutti quelli che si addormentarono in lui. | 13 But we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. |
| 14 Questo vi diciamo sulla parola del Signore, che noi viventi, rimasti sino alla venuta del Signore, non preverremo quelli che si addormentarono; | 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. |
| 15 perché il Signore stesso, al segnale, alla voce dell'Arcangelo, allo squillo della tromba di Dio scenderà dal cielo, e i morti in Cristo risusciteranno i primi; | 15 For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, shall not precede those who have fallen asleep. |
| 16 poi noi che viviamo, che siamo rimasti, saremo con essi trasportati in aria, sopra le nuvole, a incontrare il Signore, e così saremo col Signore per sempre. | 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the archangel's call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first; |
| 17 Consolatevi adunque scambievolmente con queste parole. | 17 then we who are alive, who are left, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so we shall always be with the Lord. |
| 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words. |
