1 Perciò non potendo più resistere, abbiamo preferito rimanere soli in Atene,	1 When we could not bear it any longer, we decided it would be best to be left without a companion atAthens,
2 e vi abbiamo mandato Timoteo, nostro fratello e ministro di Dio nel Vangelo di Cristo, per confermarvi ed incoraggiarvi nella vostra fede,	2 and sent our brother Timothy, who is God's helper in spreading the gospel of Christ, to keep you firmand encourage you about your faith
3 affinchè nessuno di voi sia scosso per queste tribolazioni, giacché voi stessi sapete che a questo siamo destinati;	3 and prevent any of you from being unsettled by the present hardships. As you know, these are bound tocome our way:
4 infatti, anche quando eravamo con voi, vi predicevamo che avremmo da patire tribolazioni; e questo è avvenuto come ben sapete.	4 indeed, when we were with you, we warned you that we are certain to have hardships to bear, and thatis what has happened now, as you have found out.
5 Ed è appunto per questo che, non potendo più resistere, mandai per avere notizie della vostra fede, per paura che il tentatore non vi avesse tentato, e non fosse riuscita vana la nostra fatica.	5 That is why, when I could not bear it any longer, I sent to assure myself of your faith: I was afraid theTester might have put you to the test, and al our work might have been pointless.
6 Ora poi che Timoteo ci è tornato da voi, e ci ha recate ottime notizie riguardo alla vostra fede e carità, al buon ricordo che sempre conservate di noi, alla bramosia che avete di vederci (come noi di vedere voi),	6 However, Timothy has returned from you and has given us good news of your faith and your love,tel ing us that you always remember us with pleasure and want to see us quite as much as we want to see you.
7 siamo stati da voi consolati, o fratelli, in mezzo a tutte le nostre privazioni e tribolazioni, a motivo della vostra fede.	7 And so, brothers, your faith has been a great encouragement to us in the middle of our own distressand hardship;
8 Or si che possiamo dire di vivere, giacché voi restate saldi nel Signore.	8 now we can breathe again, as you are holding firm in the Lord.
9 E qual ringraziamento possiamo noi rendere a Dio per voi, per tutta la gioia che noi proviamo a causa vostra dinanzi al nostro Dio,	9 How can we thank God enough for you, for all the joy we feel before our God on your account?
10 giorno e notte, sempre più pregandolo di poter vedere la vostra faccia, e supplire a quel che manca alla vostra fede?	10 We are earnestly praying night and day to be able to see you face to face again and make up anyshortcomings in your faith.
11 Il medesimo Dio e Padre nostro e il Signore nostro Gesù Cristo ci aprono le vie per venire a voi;	11 May God our Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, ease our path to you.
12 e faccia il Signore che voi abbondiate e sovrabbondiate di carità fra di voi e verso tutti (come anche noi abbondiamo verso di voi);	12 May the Lord increase and enrich your love for each other and for al , so that it matches ours for you.
13 in modo che i vostri cuori, irreprensibili, siano confermati nella santità dinanzi a Dio e Padre nostro per quando il Signore nostro Gesù Cristo verrà con tutti i suoi santi. Così sia.	13 And may he so confirm your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless in the sight of our God andFather when our Lord Jesus comes with al his holy ones.
