BIBBIA TINTORI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 L'anno terzo del regno di Ioachim, re di Giuda, Nabucodonosor re di Babilonia andò contro Gerusalemme e l'assediò.	1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched onJerusalem and besieged it.
2 Il Si­gnore diede nelle sue mani Ioa­chim, re di Giuda, e una parte dei vasi della casa di Dio, e li trasportò nella terra di Sennaar, nella casa del suo Dio, e depose i vasi nella casa del tesoro del suo Dio.	2 The Lord let Jehoiakim king of Judah fal into his power, as well as some of the vessels belonging to theTemple of God. These he took away to Shinar, putting the vessels into the treasury of his own gods.
3 Il re disse ad Asfenez, capo degli eunuchi, di menargli davanti alcuni dei figli d'Israele, di stirpe reale o nobili,	3 From the Israelites, the king ordered Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to bring a certain number of boys ofroyal or noble descent;
4 giovinetti, senza difetto, belli, istruiti in ogni sapienza, ornati di scienza, bene educati, e tali da potere stare nel palazzo del re, e di far loro insegnare la letteratura e la lingua dei Caldei.	4 they had to be without any physical defect, of good appearance, versed in every branch of wisdom,wel -informed, discerning, suitable for service at the royal court. Ashpenaz was to teach them to speak and writethe language of the Chaldaeans.
5 Il re assegnò loro per ciascun giorno il vitto della sua tavola, il vino di cui beveva egli stesso, affinchè, con tre anni di tal regime, fossero da star davanti al re.	5 The king assigned them a daily allowance of food and wine from the royal table. They were to receive an education lasting for three years, after which they would enter the royal service.
6 Or tra questi vi fu­rono, dei figli di Giuda, Daniele, Anania, Misael e Azaria.	6 Among them were the Judaeans Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.
7 Il capo degli eunuchi diede loro altri nomi: Daniele lo chiamò Baltassar, Anania Sidrac, Misael Misac, e Azaria Abdenago.	7 The chief eunuch gave them other names, cal ing Daniel Belteshazzar, Hananiah Shadrach, MishaelMeshach, and Azariah Abed-Nego.
8 Daniele, avendo risoluto in cuor suo di non contaminarsi col mangiare di quello che mangiava il re, col bere del vino che il re beveva, pregò il capo degli eunu­chi a permettergli di non conta­minarsi.	8 Daniel, who was determined not to incur pol ution by food and wine from the royal table, begged thechief eunuch to spare him this defilement.
9 Dio fece trovar grazia e benignità a Daniele presso il capo degli eunuchi.	9 God al owed Daniel to receive faithful love and sympathy from the chief eunuch.
10 Ma disse a Da­niele il capo degli eunuchi: « Io ho paura del re mio signore, il quale vi ha assegnato cibo e be­vanda; or s'egli vedrà i vostri visi più macilenti di quelli degli altri giovanetti vostri coetanei, voi mi condannerete a morte davan­ti al re ».	10 But the eunuch warned Daniel, 'I am afraid of my lord the king: he has assigned you food and drink,and if he sees you looking thinner in the face than the other boys of your age, my head wil be in danger with theking because of you.'
11 Allora Daniele disse a Malasar, preposto dal capo degli eunuchi alla cura di Daniele, Anania, Misael e Azaria:	11 To the guard assigned to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah by the chief eunuch, Daniel thensaid,
12 « Ti prego a fare per dieci giorni un esperimento su noi tuoi servi, di farci mangiare dei legumi e bere dell'acqua.	12 'Please al ow your servants a ten days' trial, during which we are given only vegetables to eat andwater to drink.
13 Poi paragona i no­stri volti a quelli dei giovanetti che si cibano delle vivande reali, e regolati coi tuoi servi da quan­to vedrai ».	13 You can then compare our looks with those of the boys who eat the king's food; go by what you see,and treat your servants accordingly.'
14 Accettata la proposta, egli fece sopra di loro la prova per dieci giorni;	14 The man agreed to do what they asked and put them on ten days' trial.
15 e al fine dei dieci giorni i loro visi appar­vero più coloriti, più pieni di quelli di tutti i giovanetti nutriti coi cibi reali.	15 When the ten days were over, they looked better and fatter than any of the boys who had eaten theiral owance from the royal table;
16 Allora Malasar messi da parte i cibi e il vino che, dovevan bere, dava loro dei legumi.	16 so the guard withdrew their al owance of food and the wine they were to drink, and gave themvegetables.
17 A questi giovanetti Dio diede scienza e perizia in ogni libro e sapienza. A Daniele poi diede l'intelligenza di tutte le visioni e dei sogni.	17 To these four boys God gave knowledge and skil in every aspect of literature and learning; Danielalso had the gift of interpreting every kind of vision and dream.
18 Passato il tempo dopo il quale, secondo l'ordine del re, gli dovevano essere condotti davanti, il capo degli eunuchi li presentò a Nabucodonosor.	18 When the time stipulated by the king for the boys to be presented to him came round, the chiefeunuch presented them to Nebuchadnezzar.
19 Il re s'intrattenne con essi; e non essendosi trovato fra tutti chi eguagliasse Daniele, Anania, Misael e Azaria, furono ammessi al servizio del re.	19 The king conversed with them, and among all the boys found none to equal Daniel, Hananiah, Mishaeland Azariah. So they became members of the king's court,
20 In ogni questione di sapienza e d'intelligenza che loro propose, il re li trovò dieci volte superiori agli indovini, ai maghi di tutto il suo regno.	20 and on whatever point of wisdom or understanding he might question them, he found them ten timesbetter than all the magicians and soothsayers in his entire kingdom. Daniel remained there until the first year ofKing Cyrus.
21 Daniele stette (alla corte) fino all'anno primo del re Ciro.
