| 2 e che aveva seco Lisia, suo procuratore e primo ministro degli affari del regno, il quale conduceva centodieci mila fanti e cinque mila cavalieri e ventidue elefanti, e trecento carri armati di falci. | 2 and with him Lysias, his guardian, who had charge of the government. Each of them had a Greek force of one hundred and ten thousand infantry, five thousand three hundred cavalry, twenty-two elephants, and three hundred chariots armed with scythes. |
| 3 Si unì ad essi anche Menelao, il quale con molti inganni supplicava Antioco, non per la salvezza della patria, ma colla speranza d'essere rimesso in possesso del principato. | 3 Menelaus also joined them and with utter hypocrisy urged Antiochus on, not for the sake of his country's welfare, but because he thought that he would be established in office. |
| 4 Ma il Re dei re suscitò lo sdegno d'Antioco contro quel peccatore, e, avendolo Lisia rappresentato come la causa di tutti i mali, il re comandò che, secondo il costume di quel paese, fosse preso e fatto morire nel medesimo luogo. | 4 But the King of kings aroused the anger of Antiochus against the scoundrel; and when Lysias informed him that this man was to blame for all the trouble, he ordered them to take him to Beroea and to put him to death by the method which is the custom in that place. |
| 5 Or v'era in quello stesso luogo una torre di cinquanta cubiti che aveva da ogni parte masse di cenere, e prospettava su un precipizio. | 5 For there is a tower in that place, fifty cubits high, full of ashes, and it has a rim running around it which on all sides inclines precipitously into the ashes. |
| 6 Ordinò che il sacrilego fosse precipitato nella cenere, dandogli tutti la spinta per la rovina. | 6 There they all push to destruction any man guilty of sacrilege or notorious for other crimes. |
| 7 E fu per tal legge che giunse a morire il prevaricatore della legge, Menelao, senza essere affidato alla terra. | 7 By such a fate it came about that Menelaus the lawbreaker died, without even burial in the earth. |
| 8 E certo molto giustamente: infatti, avendo egli commessi molti delitti contro l'altare di Dio, di cui era santo il fuoco, santa la cenere, fu condannato a morire nella cenere. | 8 And this was eminently just; because he had committed many sins against the altar whose fire and ashes were holy, he met his death in ashes. |
| 9 Intanto il re s'avanzava con animo furibondo, per mostrarsi ai Giudei più cattivo di suo padre. | 9 The king with barbarous arrogance was coming to show the Jews things far worse than those that had been done in his father's time. |
| 10 Giuda, sapute queste cose, ordinò al popolo d'invocare giorno e notte il Signore, affinchè come sempre ancora li aiutasse, | 10 But when Judas heard of this, he ordered the people to call upon the Lord day and night, now if ever to help those who were on the point of being deprived of the law and their country and the holy temple, |
| 11 perchè temevano di avere a perdere la legge, la patria e il tempio santo, affinchè non permettesse che fosse di nuovo soggetto alle blasfeme nazioni quel popolo che poco prima aveva cominciato a respirare un poco. | 11 and not to let the people who had just begun to revive fall into the hands of the blasphemous Gentiles. |
| 12 Dopo che essi ebbero fatto ciò tutti insieme, ed ebbero implorata la misericordia del Signore con lacrime e digiuni, prostrati per tre giorni continui per terra, Giuda li esortò a tenersi pronti. | 12 When they had all joined in the same petition and had besought the merciful Lord with weeping and fasting and lying prostrate for three days without ceasing, Judas exhorted them and ordered them to stand ready. |
| 13 Egli cogli anziani aveva deciso di uscire in campo prima che il re coll'esercito si accostasse alla Giudea, e s'impadronisse della città, e di rimettere al giudizio di Dio la riuscita della cosa. | 13 After consulting privately with the elders, he determined to march out and decide the matter by the help of God before the king's army could enter Judea and get possession of the city. |
| 14 Riconosciuto adunque il potere su tutte le cose a Dio creatore del mondo, ed esortati i suoi a combattere virilmente, a difendere fino alla morte le leggi, il tempio, la città, la patria, i cittadini, si accampò coll'esercito vicino a Modin. | 14 So, committing the decision to the Creator of the world and exhorting his men to fight nobly to the death for the laws, temple, city, country, and commonwealth, he pitched his camp near Modein. |
| 15 Data ai suoi come parola d'ordine: « Vittoria di Dio », scelti dei giovani fortissimi, di notte assalì la tenda del re, e negli accampamenti uccise quattro mila uomini, e il più grande degli elefanti, con quelli che vi stavan sopra. | 15 He gave his men the watchword, "God's victory," and with a picked force of the bravest young men, he attacked the king's pavilion at night and slew as many as two thousand men in the camp. He stabbed the leading elephant and its rider. |
| 16 Riempiti di spavento e di scompiglio gli accampamenti con sì felice impresa, si ritirarono. | 16 In the end they filled the camp with terror and confusion and withdrew in triumph. |
| 17 Al primo albeggiare del giorno ciò era compiuto, coll'aiuto della protezione di Dio. | 17 This happened, just as day was dawning, because the Lord's help protected him. |
| 18 Avuta la prova dell'audacia dei Giudei, il re tentava d'occupare con arte i luoghi difficili. | 18 The king, having had a taste of the daring of the Jews, tried strategy in attacking their positions. |
| 19 E si accostò coll'esercito a Betsura, ben munita fortezza dei Giudei; ma era respinto, rovesciato, decimato. | 19 He advanced against Beth-zur, a strong fortress of the Jews, was turned back, attacked again, and was defeated. |
| 20 Giuda mandava agli assediati il necessario. | 20 Judas sent in to the garrison whatever was necessary. |
| 21 Siccome un certo Rodoco, dell'esercito dei Giudei, rivelava dei segreti ai nemici, fatta una inchiesta fu trovato e messo in prigione. | 21 But Rhodocus, a man from the ranks of the Jews, gave secret information to the enemy; he was sought for, caught, and put in prison. |
| 22 Il re di nuovo trattò con quelli che erano in Betsura, e, data e ricevuta la destra, se ne andò. | 22 The king negotiated a second time with the people in Beth-zur, gave pledges, received theirs, withdrew, attacked Judas and his men, was defeated |
| 23 E attaccò battaglia con Giuda, e fu vinto. Poi avendo saputo che Filippo, lasciato a capo degli affari, si era ribellato ad Antiochia, ne restò costernato nell'animo, e, raccomandandosi ai Giudei, si assoggettò ad essi, e giurò tutto quello che parve loro giusto, e, fatta la riconciliazione, offrì un sacrifizio, onorò il tempio e vi pose dei doni. | 23 he got word that Philip, who had been left in charge of the government, had revolted in Antioch; he was dismayed, called in the Jews, yielded and swore to observe all their rights, settled with them and offered sacrifice, honored the sanctuary and showed generosity to the holy place. |

| 25 Ma quando (il re) andò a Tolemaide, quelli di Tolemaide mostrarono di non poter sopportare quel trattato d'amicizia, e d'esser indignati in modo da voler rompere il patto. | 25 and went to Ptolemais. The people of Ptolemais were indignant over the treaty; in fact they were so angry that they wanted to annul its terms. |
| 26 Allora Lisia salì sulla tribuna, ed esposte le ragioni, sedò il popolo, e se ne tornò ad Antiochia. Così andò il viaggio e il ritorno del re. | 26 Lysias took the public platform, made the best possible defense, convinced them, appeased them, gained their good will, and set out for Antioch. This is how the king's attack and withdrawal turned out. |
