1 Benadad re della Siria, radunato tutto il suo esercito, con trentadue re e cavalli e carri, salì a combattere contro Samaria a cui pose l'assedio.	1 Then Benhadad, the king of Syria, gathered together his entire army. And there were thirty-two kings with him, with horses and chariots. And ascending, he fought against Samaria, and he besieged it.
2 Mandò poi dei messi in città, a dire ad Acab:	2 And sending messengers into the city, to Ahab, the king of Israel,
3 « Queste cose dice Benadad: Il tuo argento e il tuo oro è mio, le tue mogli e i tuoi figli più belli son miei ».	3 he said: “Thus says Benhadad: Your silver and your gold is mine. And your wives and your best sons are mine.”
4 Il re d'Israele rispose: « E' proprio come tu dici, o re mio signore; io con tutte le mie cose sono tuo ».	4 And the king of Israel responded, “In agreement with your word, my lord the king, I am yours, with all that is mine.”
5 I messi tornarono a dire: « Queste cose dice Benadad che ci ha mandati a te: Tu mi darai il tuo argento, il tuo oro, le tue mogli e i tuoi figli.	5 And the messengers, returning, said: “Thus says Benhadad, who sent us to you: Your silver and your gold, and your wives and your sons, you shall give to me.
6 Domani adunque, a questa medesima ora, manderò da te i miei servi, i quali, frugando la tua casa e quella dei tuoi servi, prenderanno e porterai! via ciò che loro piacerà ».	6 Therefore, tomorrow, at this same hour, I will send my servants to you, and they will search your house and the houses of your servants. And all that pleases them, they will put in their hands and take away.”
7 Allora il re di Israele chiamò tutti gli anziani del paese e disse: « Se ben considerate, vedrete che egli ci tende insidie, perchè, avendo egli mandato da me per aver le mie mogli, i miei figli, il mio argento, il mio oro, io non rifiutai ».	7 Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and he said: “Let your souls take heed, and see that he commits treachery against us. For he sent to me for my wives and sons, and for silver and gold. And I did not refuse.”
8 Tutti gli anziani e tutto il popolo gli risposero: « Non gli dare ascolto, non cedere ».	8 And all those greater by birth, with all the people, said to him, “You should neither listen, nor acquiesce to him.”
9 Acab allora rispose ai messi di Benadad: « Dite al re mio signore: tutto quello che da principio mandasti a dire a me tuo servo, lo farò; ma quest'altra cosa non posso farla».	9 And so, he responded to the messengers of Benhadad: “Tell my lord the king: Everything about which you sent to me in the beginning, I your servant will do. But this thing, I am not able to do.”
10 I messi andaron a portar la risposta a Benadad, il quale li rimandò a dire: « Gli dèi mi facciano questo e peggio, se la polvere di Samaria basta per empire il pugno di tutta la gente che mi segue ».	10 And returning, the messengers took this to him, and he sent again and said, “May the gods do these things to me, and may they add these other things, if the dust of Samaria is enough to fill the hands of all the people who follow me.”
11 Il re d'Israele gli mandò questa risposta: « Chi è armato non si glori!i come chi posa l'armi ».	11 And responding, the king of Israel said, “Tell him that one who is girded should not boast the same as one who is ungirded.”
12 Quando Benadad, che era allora a bere cogli altri re nelle tende, sentì queste parole, disse ai suoi servi: « Circondate la città ». Ed essi la circondarono.	12 Then it happened that, when Benhadad had heard this word, he and the kings were drinking in a pavilion. And he said to his servants, “Encircle the city.” And they encircled it.
13 Ed ecco un profeta accostarsi ad Acab re d'Israele e dirgli: « Cosi dice il Signore: Vedi tu questa immensa moltitudine? Ecco io oggi la darò nelle tue mani, affinchè tu conosca che io sono il Signore ».	13 And behold, one prophet, drawing near to Ahab, the king of Israel, said to him: “Thus says the Lord: Certainly, you have seen this entire exceedingly great multitude? Behold, I will deliver them into your hand today, so that you may know that I am the Lord.”
14 Acab disse: « Per mezzo di chi? » L'altro rispose: « Così dice il Signore: per mezzo dei servi dei capi delle provincie ». Acab disse: « Chi comincerà la battaglia? » L'altro rispose: «Tu».	14 And Ahab said, “By whom?” And he said to him: “Thus says the Lord: By the footmen of the leaders of the provinces.” And he said, “Who should begin to do battle?” And he said, “You should.”
15 Acab allora fece la rassegna dei servi dei capi delle provincie e ne trovò duecento trentadue; dopo di essi fece la rassegna del popolo dei figli d'Israele: sette mila.	15 Therefore, he took a count of the servants of the leaders of the provinces. And he found the number to be two hundred thirty-two. And he set them in order after the people, all the sons of Israel, who were seven thousand.
16 Questi fecero una sortita sul mezzodì, mentre Benadad, già ubriaco, beveva nella sua tenda con i trentadue re ch'eran venuti in suo aiuto.	16 And they went out at midday. But Benhadad was drinking; he was inebriated in his pavilion, and the thirty-two kings with him, who had arrived in order to assist him.
17 I servi dei capi delle provincie uscirono in prima linea; Benadad mandò, e tornarono a dirgli: « Sono usciti degli uomini da Samaria ».	17 Then the servants of the leaders of the provinces went out to the first place, at the front. And so, Benhadad sent, and they reported to him, saying: “Men have gone out from Samaria.”
18 Egli disse: « Se vengono per la pace, prendeteli vivi; se per combattere, prendeteli vivi ».	18 And he said: “If they have arrived for peace, apprehend them alive; if to do battle, capture them alive.”
19 Ma i servi dei capi delle provincie, seguiti dal resto dell'esercito,	19 Therefore, the servants of the leaders of the provinces went out, and the remainder of the army was following.
20 COlpirono ciascuno che gli veniva contro, e i Siri fuggirono e Israele l'inseguì. Benadad stesso, re di Siria, se ne fuggì a cavallo coi suoi cavalieri.	20 And each one struck down the man who came against him. And the Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them. Also, Benhadad, the king of Syria, fled on a horse, with his horsemen.
21 Il re d'Israele, essendo uscito a combattere, battè i cavalli e i carri, e inflisse alla Siria una grande sconfìtta.	21 But the king of Israel, going out, struck the horses and the chariots, and he struck the Syrians with a great slaughter.
22 Allora il profeta, accostatosi al re d'Israele, gli disse: « Orsù, fatti animo e pensa bene al da farsi, perchè l'anno venturo il re di Siria salirà contro di te ».	22 Then a prophet, drawing near to the king of Israel, said to him: “Go and be strengthened. And know and see what you are doing. For in the following year, the king of Syria will rise up against you.”
23 Or dunque dissero al re di Siria i suoi servi: « I loro dèi sono dèi delle montagne: ecco perchè ci han vinti, ma se noi sceglieremo di combattere contro di loro nelle pianure, li vinceremo.	23 Then truly, the servants of the king of Syria said to him: “Their gods are the gods of the mountains; because of this, they have overwhelmed us. But it is better that we fight against them in the plains, and then we will prevail over them.
24 Tu dunque fa così: allontana tutti quei re dal tuo esercito, e metti al loro posto dei capitani;	24 Therefore, you should do this word: Remove each of the kings from your army, and set commanders in their place.
25 forma un esercito uguale a quello caduto, e fa lo stesso dei cavalli e dei carri; e noi combatteremo contro di loro nelle pianure, e vedrai che li vinceremo ». Egli diede ascolto e fece secondo il loro consiglio.	25 And replace the number of soldiers who have been cut down of yours, and the horses, in accord with the earlier number of horses, and the chariots, in accord with the number of chariots that you had before. And we will fight against them in the plains, and you will see that we will prevail over them.” And he trusted in their counsel, and he did so.
26 Passato un anno, Benadad, fatta la rassegna dei Siri, salì in Afec per combattere contro Israele.	26 Therefore, after the passing of the year, Benhadad took a count of the Syrians, and he ascended to Aphek, so that he might fight against Israel.
27 Fu fatta la rassegna anche dei figli d'Israele, i quali, presi dei viveri, andarono loro incontro, e, posto il campo di faccia ai nemici, parevano due piccoli greggi di capre, mentre i Siri riempivano il paese.	27 Then the sons of Israel were numbered, and taking provisions, they set out to the opposite side. And they stretched out the camp facing them, like two little flocks of goats. But the Syrians filled the land.
28 Un uomo di Dio accostatosi al re d'Israele, gli disse: « Così dice il Signore: Perchè i Siri hanno detto: Il Signore è Dio dei monti, e non Dio delle valli, io darò tutta questa moltitudine nelle tue mani, e conoscerete che io sono il Signore ».	28 And one man of God, drawing near, said to the king of Israel: “Thus says the Lord: Because the Syrians have said, ‘The Lord is the God of the mountains, but he is not the God of the valleys,’ I will deliver this entire great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the Lord.”
29 Per sette giorni i due eserciti stettero accampati l'un contro l'altro; al settimo giorno fu data battaglia, e i figli d'Israele uccisero in un sol giorno cento mila pedoni ai Siri.	29 And for seven days, both sides arranged each of their battle lines. Then, on the seventh day, the war was undertaken. And the sons of Israel struck down, from the Syrians, one hundred thousand foot soldiers in one day.
30 Quelli scampati fuggirono nella città di Afec, ma il muro cadde sopra i ventisette mila uomini che eran rimasti. Benadad entrò fuggendo nella città, e si appiattò in una stanza che era dentro un'altra.	30 Then those who had remained fled to Aphek, into the city. And the wall fell upon twenty-seven thousand men of those who had remained. Then Benhadad, fleeing, entered the city, into a room that was inside another room.
31 Ma i suoi servi gli dissero: « Ecco, abbiamo sentito dire che i re d'Israele sono clementi: mettiamoci adunque dei sacelli ai fianchi e delle corde al capo e andiamo incontro al re d'Israele; forse egli ci salverà la vita ».	31 And his servants said to him: “Behold, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel show clemency. And so, let us put sackcloth around our waists, and ropes on our heads, and let us go out to the king of Israel. Perhaps he will save our lives.”
32 Si cinsero i fianchi coi sacchi, si posero le corde al capo, andarono dal re d'Israele e gli dissero: « Benadad tuo servo dice: Ti scongiuro, salvami la vita ». Ed egli disse: « Se è ancor vivo è mio fratello ».	32 So they wrapped sackcloth around their waists, and they placed ropes on their heads. And they went to the king of Israel, and they said to him: “Your servant, Benhadad, says: ‘I beg you to let my soul live.’ ” And he replied, “If he is still alive, he is my brother.”
33 I Siri ebbero questo per buon augurio, e subito presolo in parola, dissero: « Benadad è tuo fratello ». Ed egli disse loro: « Amdate e conducetelo a me ». Benadad allora si presentò a lui, che lo fece salire sul suo carro.	33 The men accepted this as a good sign. And hastily, they took up the word from his mouth, and they said, “Benhadad is your brother.” And he said to them, “Go, and bring him to me.” Therefore, Benhadad went out to him, and he lifted him onto his chariot.
34 Benadad gli disse: « Io restituirò le città che mio padre tolse a tuo padre, fatti pure delle piazze in Damasco, come il padre mio ne fece in Samaria, e io, fatta alleanza con te, me ne andrò ». Acab fece allora alleanza e lo rimandò.	34 And he said to him: “The cities that my father took from your father, I will return. And you may make streets for yourself in Damascus, just as my father made in Samaria. And after we have made a pact, I will withdraw from you.” Therefore, he formed a pact with him, and he released him.
35 Allora un uomo dei figli dei profeti disse al suo compagno, colla parola del Signore: « Percuotimi ». Ma quello non volle percuoterlo.	35 Then a certain man from the sons of the prophets said to his associate, by the word of the Lord, “Strike me.” But he was not willing to strike.
36 Ed egli disse: « Perchè tu non hai ascoltata la voce del Signore, ecco, dopo che sarai partito da me, un leone ti ucciderà ». E quando quello si fu allontanato da lui un poco, un leone gli andò incontro e l'uccise.	36 And he said to him: “Because you were not willing to heed the voice of the Lord, behold, you will depart from me, and a lion will slay you. And when he had departed a short distance from him, a lion found him, and slew him.
37 Avendo poi trovato un altro uomo gli disse: « Percuotimi ». E quello lo percosse da ferirlo.	37 But upon finding another man, he said to him, “Strike me.” And he struck him, and wounded him.
38 Il profeta allora partì e andò a trovare il re, cambiando, coll'imbrattarsi di polvere, l'aspetto dei suoi occhi e della sua faccia.	38 Then the prophet departed. And he met the king along the way, and he changed his appearance by sprinkling dust around his mouth and eyes.
39 Passato il re, gridò dietro a lui e disse: « Il tuo servo uscì a combattere nella mischia; ma, essendosi uno dato alla fuga, un altro lo condusse a me e disse: Custodisci quest'uomo: se lo farai scappare, la tua vita sarà per la sua, o almeno pagherai un talento d'argento.	39 And when the king had passed by, he cried out to the king, and he said: “Your servant went out to do battle in close quarters. And when one man had fled, a certain person brought him to me, and he said: ‘Guard this man. For if he slips away, your life will take the place of his life, or you will weigh out one talent of silver.’
40 Or mentre io, turbato, mi volgevo in qua e là, egli in un baleno disparve ». Il re d'Israele gli disse: « La tua condanna è quella stessa che tu hai pronunziata ».	40 And while I was distracted, turning one way and another, suddenly, he was not to be seen.” And the king of Israel said to him, “This is your judgment, that which you yourself have decreed.”
41 Ma egli pulì dalla polvere la sua faccia, e il re d'Israele lo riconobbe per uno dei profeti.	41 Then immediately, he wiped away the dust from his face, and the king of Israel recognized him, that he was one of the prophets.
42 Allora egli disse al re: « Queste cose dice il Signore: Perchè ti sei lasciato sfuggire di mano un uomo degno di morte, la tua vita sarà per la sua, il tuo popolo per il suo popolo ».	42 And he said to him: “Thus says the Lord: Because you have released from your hand a man worthy of death, your life will take the place of his life, and your people will take the place of his people.”
43 Il re d'Israele, sdegnando di sentire ancora, fece ritorno alla sua casa, e, pieno di furore, andò a Samaria.	43 And so the king of Israel returned to his house, unwilling to listen, and a fury entered into Samaria.
