BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - Sono queste le nazioni che il Signore lasciò sopravvivere per mettere per mezzo di esse alla prova Israele e tutti coloro che non aveano conosciute le guerre dei Cananei,	1 These are the nations which Yahweh al owed to remain, by their means to put all those Israelites to thetest who had not experienced any of the Canaanite wars
2 affinchè i figli loro imparassero poi a combattere coi nemici e si abituassero alla guerra:	2 (this was only to instruct the Israelites' descendants, to teach them the art of war, those at least whohad not experienced it previously):
3 i cinque satrapi dei Filistei, tutti i Cananei, i Sidoni e gli Evei, che abitavano sul monte Libano, dal monte Baal Ermon fino all'entrata di Emat.	3 the five chiefs of the Philistines, al the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hittites who lived in therange of the Lebanon, from the uplands of Baal-Hermon to the Pass of Hamath.
4 Il Signore li lasciò sopravvivere per mettere alla prova per mezzo di essi Israele se ascoltasse o no i comandi che il Signore aveva dato ai padri loro per mezzo di Mosè.	4 They were used to put Israel to the test and see if they would keep the orders which Yahweh had giventheir ancestors through Moses.
5 I figli d'Israele adunque abitarono in mezzo ai Cananei, agli Etei, agli Amorrei, ai Ferezei, agli Evei e ai Jebusei	5 The Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites and Amorites, the Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites;
6 e presero in moglie le loro figlie e diedero le proprie figlie ai figli di essi e prestarono culto alle loro divinità.	6 they married their daughters, they gave their own sons to their daughters and they served their gods.
7 Fecero essi il male al cospetto del Signore e dimentichi del loro Dio servirono ai Baalim e ad Astarot.	7 The Israelites did what is evil in Yahweh's eyes. They forgot Yahweh their God and served Baals andAsherahs.
8 Perciò adiratosi il Signore contro Israele lo diede nelle mani di Cusan Rasataim re della Mesopotamia, al quale furono soggetti per otto anni.	8 Then Yahweh's anger blazed out against Israel: he handed them over to Cushan-Rishathaim king ofEdom, and the Israelites were enslaved to Cushan-Rishathaim for eight years.
9 Gridarono allora al Signore e questi suscitò per salvarli e liberarli Otoniele figlio di Cenez, il fratello minore di Caleb.	9 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh and Yahweh raised for the Israelites a deliverer who rescued them,Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.
10 In lui fu lo spirito del Signore e giudicò Israele, ed essendo uscito per combattere, il Signore gli diede nelle mani Cusan Rasataim re della Siria e lo vinse.	10 The spirit of Yahweh was on him; he became judge in Israel and set out for war. Yahweh deliveredCushan-Rishathaim king of Edom into his hands, and he triumphed over Cushan- Rishathaim.
11 Il paese riposò quindi per quarant'anni, fino alla morte di Otoniele figlio di Cenez.	11 The country then had peace for forty years. Othniel son of Kenaz then died.
12 Ma i figli d'Israele tornarono a fare il male al cospetto del Signore, che, in pena delle loro iniquità, fece prevalere sopra di loro Eglon re di Moab.	12 Again the Israelites began doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes, and Yahweh strengthened Eglon kingof Moab against Israel, since they were doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes.
13 Alleatosi egli ai figli di Ammon e di Amalec venne a combattere Israele e s'impadronì della città delle palme	13 Eglon in conjunction with the sons of Ammon and Amalek marched on Israel, beat them and capturedthe City of Palm Trees.
14 e i figli d'Israele servirono per diciotto anni a Eglon re di Moab.	14 The Israelites were enslaved to Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years.
15 Ma poi essi alzarono la voce verso il Signore, il quale suscitò loro un salvatore di nome Aod figlio di Gera figlio di Jemini, che era ambidestro. Per suo mezzo i figli d'Israele mandarono regali ad Eglon re di Moab.	15 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised a deliverer for them, Ehud son of Gera, aBenjaminite; he was left-handed. The Israelites appointed him to take their tribute to Eglon king of Moab.
16 Aod si era fatto una spada a due tagli, che avea un'impugnatura della lunghezza di un palmo e se l'era legata sotto il mantello, al fianco destro.	16 Ehud made himself a dagger -- it was double-edged and a foot long -- and strapped it under hisclothes on his right thigh.
17 Egli offrì i regali ad Eglon re di Moab, il quale era assai pingue.	17 He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. This Eglon was a very fat man.
18 Quando gli ebbe offerto i regali, rinviò i compagni che erano venuti con lui	18 Having presented the tribute, Ehud sent away the men who had been carrying it;
19 e ritornato da Galgala dove erano degli idoli, disse al re: «Ho da dirti, o re, una parola in segreto». Avendo questi imposto silenzio ed essendo usciti quelli che stavano intorno a lui,	19 but he himself, on reaching the Idols which are near Gilgal, went back and said, 'I have a secretmessage for you, O king.' The king commanded silence, and al his attendants withdrew.
20 Aod gli si fece innanzi. Il re sedeva solo nella sua stanza estiva e Aod gli disse: «Ho da dirti una parola da parte di Dio». Essendosi quegli levato dal trono,	20 Ehud went up to him; he was sitting in his private room upstairs, where it was cool. Ehud said to him, 'Ihave a message from God for you, O king.' The latter immediately rose from his seat.
21 Aod stese la mano sinistra, levò la spada dal fianco destro e gliela cacciò	21 Then Ehud, reaching with his left hand, drew the dagger he was carrying on his right thigh and thrust itinto the king's belly.
22 con tal forza nel ventre che l'elsa seguì il ferro nella ferita e restò impigliata nell'eccessivo adipe. Nè egli estrasse la spada, ma lasciandola così com'era nel corpo, tosto gli escrementi del ventre uscirono per le segrete vie naturali.	22 The hilt too went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, since Ehud did not pul thedagger out of his bel y again.
23 Aod poi chiuse con diligenza le porte della camera e assicuratele con un catenaccio,	23 Ehud went out through the privies, having shut and bolted the doors of the upstairs room behind him.
24 per la parte posteriore se ne uscì. Venuti i servi del re, al veder chiuse le porte della camera si dissero: «Forse soddisfa ai suoi bisogni nella camera estiva».	24 When he had gone, the servants came back and looked; the doors of the upstairs room were bolted.They thought, 'He is probably covering his feet in the inner part of the cool room.'
25 Avendo aspettato a lungo fino a vergognarsene e vedendo che nessuno apriva, presero la chiave, aprirono e trovarono il loro padrone in terra morto.	25 They waited until they became embarrassed, but stil he did not open the doors of the upstairs room.Eventual y, they took the key and opened the door; and there lay their master, dead, on the ground.
26 Frattanto Aod, mentre quegli erano tutti in iscompiglio, se ne fuggì e, oltrepassato il luogo degli idoli donde era ritornato, venne in Seirat.	26 Meanwhile, Ehud had got away, passed the Idols and made good his escape to safety in Seirah.
27 Tutto a un tratto sonò la tromba sul monte di Efraim e con lui scesero i figli d'Israele. Postosi alla testa,	27 Once there, he sounded the horn in the highlands of Ephraim, and the Israelites came down from thehil s with him at their head.
28 egli disse loro: «Seguitemi, giacchè il Signore ci ha dato nelle mani i Moabiti nostri nemici». Discesero dietro a lui e avendo occupato i guadi del Giordano per i quali si passa in Moab, non lasciarono passare nessuno;	28 And he said to them, 'Follow me, because Yahweh has delivered your enemy Moab into your hands.'So they followed him, seized the fords of the Jordan against Moab and al owed no one to cross.
29 ma uccisero in quel tempo i Moabiti in numero di circa diecimila, tutti uomini forti e robusti; neppur uno di essi potè sfuggire	29 On that occasion they beat the Moabites, some ten thousand men, all tough and seasoned fighters,and not one escaped.
30 e Moab in quel giorno fu umiliato sotto la mano d'Israele e la terra riposò per ottant'anni.	30 That day Moab was humbled under the hand of Israel, and the country had peace for eighty years.
31 Dopo costui venne Samgar figlio di Anat, che uccise con un vomere seicento Filistei, e anch'egli fu un difensore d'Israele.	31 After him came Shamgar son of Anath. He routed six hundred of the Philistines with an ox-goad; hetoo was a deliverer of Israel.
