BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - Festo pertanto, essendo giunto nella provincia, dopo tre giorni salì da Cesarea a Gerusalemme.	1 Three days after his arrival in the province, Festus went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea.
2 E i capi dei sacerdoti e i più ragguardevoli de' Giudei gli si presentarono contro Paolo; e lo pregavano,	2 The chief priests and leaders of the Jews informed him of the case against Paul,
3 chiedendogli in grazia che lo facesse venire a Gerusalemme; intanto gli avrebbero teso insidie per ucciderlo lungo la via.	3 urgently asking him to support them against him, and to have him transferred to Jerusalem. They werepreparing an ambush to murder him on the way.
4 Ma Festo rispose che Paolo era tenuto in custodia a Cesarea, dove egli stesso sarebbe tornato fra breve.	4 But Festus replied that Paul was in custody in Caesarea, and that he would be going back there shortlyhimself.
5 «Quelli dunque di voi», diss'egli «che hanno autorità di farlo, vengano con me, e lo accusino, se alcun delitto è in quest'uomo».	5 He said, 'Let your authorities come down with me, and if there is anything wrong about the man, theycan bring a charge against him.'
6 Rimasto non più di otto o dieci giorni tra loro, ridiscese a Cesarea; e il giorno appresso, sedendo in tribunale, comandò che Paolo fosse condotto.	6 After staying with them for eight or ten days at the most, he went down to Caesarea and the next dayhe took his seat on the tribunal and had Paul brought in.
7 Venuto, i Giudei, che eran discesi da Gerusalemme, lo circondarono, movendogli molte e gravi accuse che non potevano provare,	7 As soon as Paul appeared, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem surrounded him, makingmany serious accusations which they were unable to substantiate.
8 mentre Paolo si difendeva: «Io non ho fatto nulla di male nè contro la legge de' Giudei, nè contro il tempio, nè contro Cesare».	8 Paul's defence was this, 'I have committed no offence whatever against either Jewish law, or theTemple, or Caesar.'
9 Ma Festo, volendo entrar nelle grazie de' Giudei, chiese a Paolo: «Vuoi tu salire a Gerusalemme, ed esservi giudicato di queste cose in mia presenza?».	9 Festus was anxious to gain favour with the Jews, so he said to Paul, 'Are you wil ing to go up toJerusalem and be tried on these charges before me there?'
10 Ma Paolo rispose: «Io sto al tribunale di Cesare, e qui mi si deve giudicare. A' Giudei non ho fatto torto, come tu sai molto bene.	10 But Paul replied, 'I am standing before the tribunal of Caesar and this is where I should be tried. Ihave done the Jews no wrong, as you very wel know.
11 Dato ch'io sia colpevole e abbia fatto cosa degna di morte, non ricuso di morire; ma se nelle accuse di costoro non c'è nulla di vero, nessuno mi può donare ad essi. Mi appello a Cesare!».	11 If I am guilty of committing any capital crime, I do not ask to be spared the death penalty. But if thereis no substance in the accusations these persons bring against me, no one has a right to surrender me to them. Iappeal to Caesar.'
12 Allora Festo, conferito col suo consiglio, rispose: «Ti sei appellato a Cesare? A Cesare andrai».	12 Then Festus conferred with his advisers and replied, 'You have appealed to Caesar; to Caesar youshall go.'
13 Passati alcuni giorni, il re Agrippa e Berenice arrivarono a Cesarea per salutare Festo.	13 Some days later King Agrippa and Bernice arrived in Caesarea and paid their respects to Festus.
14 Ed essendosi trattenuti vari giorni, Festo parlò di Paolo al re, dicendo: «È qui un cert'uomo, lasciato in prigione da Felice.	14 Their visit lasted several days, and Festus put Paul's case before the king, saying, 'There is a manhere whom Felix left behind in custody,
15 Quando fui a Gerusalemme, vennero i capi dei sacerdoti e gli anziani, chiedendo la sua condanna.	15 and while I was in Jerusalem the chief priests and elders of the Jews laid information against him,demanding his condemnation.
16 Risposi loro che non era usanza de' Romani di condannare un uomo, prima che l'accusato si trovi in faccia degli accusatori, e abbia modo di difendersi dall'accusa.	16 But I told them that Romans are not in the habit of surrendering any man, until the accused confrontshis accusers and is given an opportunity to defend himself against the charge.
17 Quindi, essi vennero qua, e io, senza indugio, il giorno appresso, sedendo in tribunale, comandai che quell'uomo mi fosse menato innanzi.	17 So they came here with me, and I wasted no time but took my seat on the tribunal the very next dayand had the man brought in.
18 I suoi accusatori, presentatisi, non gli attribuivano alcun delitto di quelli ch'io sospettavo;	18 When confronted with him, his accusers did not charge him with any of the crimes I had expected;
19 avevan solo contro di lui certe quistioni riguardanti la loro particolare superstizione e un certo Gesù morto, che Paolo affermava esser vivente.	19 but they had some argument or other with him about their own religion and about a dead man cal edJesus whom Paul al eged to be alive.
20 E stando io in dubbio sulla faccenda, gli proposi se voleva andar a Gerusalemme ed esservi giudicato di queste cose.	20 Not feeling qualified to deal with questions of this sort, I asked him if he would be wil ing to go toJerusalem to be tried there on this issue.
21 Ma, essendosi Paolo appellato per esser riservato al giudizio d'Augusto, io comandai fosse tenuto in custodia finchè lo mandassi a Cesare».	21 But Paul put in an appeal for his case to be reserved for the judgement of the emperor, so I orderedhim to be remanded until I could send him to Caesar.'
22 E Agrippa disse a Festo: «Vorrei udirlo anch'io codest'uomo». Quello rispose: «Domani l'udrai».	22 Agrippa said to Festus, 'I should like to hear the man myself.' He answered, 'Tomorrow you shal hearhim.'
23 Il giorno appresso, Agrippa e Berenice vennero in gran pompa, e, entrati nella sala d'udienza coi tribuni e co' notabili della città, Paolo, per ordine di Festo, fu menato innanzi.	23 So the next day Agrippa and Bernice arrived in great state and entered the audience chamberattended by the tribunes and the city notables; and Festus ordered Paul to be brought in.
24 E Festo disse: «Re Agrippa, e tutti che siete qui presenti, voi vedete quest'uomo contro il quale tutta la moltitudine de' Giudei s'è rivolta a me in Gerusalemme, gridando non esser più degno di vivere.	24 Then Festus said, 'King Agrippa, and all here present with us, you see before you the man aboutwhom the whole Jewish community has petitioned me, both in Jerusalem and here, loudly protesting that heought not to be allowed to remain alive.
25 Io però ho riconosciuto che non ha fatto nulla che meriti la morte; e siccome egli stesso s'è appellato ad Augusto, io ho deciso di mandarlo.	25 For my own part I am satisfied that he has committed no capital crime, but when he himself appealedto the emperor I decided to send him.
26 Ma non ho nulla di ben certo da scriverne al sovrano; perciò l'ho fatto venire davanti a voi, e principalmente davanti a te, o re Agrippa, affinchè, dopo questo esame, io abbia qualcosa da scrivere.	26 But I have nothing definite that I can write to his Imperial Majesty about him; that is why I haveproduced him before you all, and before you in particular, King Agrippa, so that after the examination I may havesomething to write.
27 Sembra infatti del tutto fuor di ragione mandare un carcerato senza dir le accuse contro di lui».	27 It seems to me pointless to send a prisoner without indicating the charges against him.'
