1 - Tra i Farisei c'era un uomo chiamato Nicodemo, uno dei capi dei Giudei.	1 There was one of the Pharisees called Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews,
2 Egli venne di notte a trovare Gesù e gli disse: «Maestro, noi sappiamo che sei venuto da parte di Dio, come un dottore, poichè nessuno può fare i miracoli che tu fai, se Dio non è con lui».	2 who came to Jesus by night and said, 'Rabbi, we know that you have come from God as a teacher; forno one could perform the signs that you do unless God were with him.'
3 Gesù gli rispose: «In verità, in verità ti dico che se uno non nasce di nuovo, non può vedere il regno di Dio».	3 Jesus answered: In al truth I tel you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born fromabove.
4 Nicodemo gli domandò: «Come mai può un uomo nascere, quando è già vecchio? Può forse entrare una seconda volta nel seno di sua madre e nascere di nuovo?».	4 Nicodemus said, 'How can anyone who is already old be born? Is it possible to go back into the wombagain and be born?'
5 Gesù rispose: «In verità, in verità ti dico che se uno non rinasce dall'acqua e dallo Spirito Santo, non può entrare nel regno di Dio.	5 Jesus replied: In al truth I tel you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born throughwater and the Spirit;
6 Ciò che è generato dalla carne è carne, e ciò che nasce dallo Spirito è spirito.	6 what is born of human nature is human; what is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Non meravigliarti se io ti ho detto: - Bisogna che voi nasciate di nuovo. -	7 Do not be surprised when I say: You must be born from above.
8 Il vento soffia dove vuole e tu ne odi la voce, ma non sai donde venga nè dove vada: così capita a ogni cosa nata dallo Spirito».	8 The wind blows where it pleases; you can hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from orwhere it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.
9 Nicodemo gli domandò: «Com'è possibile che questo avvenga?».	9 'How is that possible?' asked Nicodemus.
10 Gesù gli rispose: «Tu sei maestro in Israele e non lo sai?	10 Jesus replied, 'You are the Teacher of Israel, and you do not know these things!
11 In verità, in verità ti dico: Noi parliamo di quel che sappiamo e attestiamo quel che abbiamo visto; e voi non accettate la nostra testimonianza.	11 'In al truth I tel you, we speak only about what we know and witness only to what we have seen and yet you people reject our evidence.
12 Se non credete quando vi parlo, delle cose terrene, come potete credere quando verrò a parlarvi delle celesti?	12 If you do not believe me when I speak to you about earthly things, how wil you believe me when Ispeak to you about heavenly things?
13 Nessuno è salito al cielo all'infuori di Colui che è disceso dal cielo, il Figliuol dell'uomo che è in cielo.	13 No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven, the Son of man;
14 Come Mosè ha innalzato il serpente nel deserto, così è necessario che il Figliuol dell'uomo sia innalzato,	14 as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up
15 affinchè chiunque crede in lui non perisca, ma abbia la vita eterna.	15 so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.
16 Infatti Dio ha talmente amato il mondo da dare il suo Figliuolo unigenito, affinchè chiunque crede in lui non perisca, ma abbia la vita eterna.	16 For this is how God loved the world: he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him maynot perish but may have eternal life.
17 Poichè Dio non ha mandato il Figliuol suo nel mondo per giudicare il mondo, ma perchè il mondo sia salvato per mezzo di lui.	17 For God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but so that through him the world might besaved.
18 Chi crede in lui non è giudicato, ma chi non crede è giudicato perchè non ha creduto nel nome dell'unigenito Figliuol di Dio.	18 No one who believes in him wil be judged; but whoever does not believe is judged already, becausethat person does not believe in the Name of God's only Son.
19 E il giudizio è questo: la luce è venuta nel mondo, e gli uomini hanno preferito le tenebre alla luce, perchè le loro opere erano malvage.	19 And the judgement is this: though the light has come into the world people have preferred darkness tothe light because their deeds were evil.
20 Perchè chi fa il male, odia la luce e non si accosta alla luce affinchè le sue opere non siano giudicate.	20 And indeed, everybody who does wrong hates the light and avoids it, to prevent his actions from beingshown up;
21 Chi invece opera secondo la verità s'accosta alla luce, affinchè le sue opere si manifestino come compiute in Dio».	21 but whoever does the truth comes out into the light, so that what he is doing may plainly appear asdone in God.'
22 Dopo queste cose Gesù, coi suoi discepoli, andò nel paese della Giudea e vi si tratteneva con essi, e battezzava.	22 After this, Jesus went with his disciples into the Judaean countryside and stayed with them there andbaptised.
23 Pure Giovanni battezzava in Ennon, vicino a Salim, dove era abbondanza di acqua e la gente vi si recava a farsi battezzare,	23 John also was baptising at Aenon near Salim, where there was plenty of water, and people were goingthere and were being baptised.
24 perchè Giovanni non era ancora stato messo in prigione.	24 For John had not yet been put in prison.
25 Ora nacque una disputa tra i discepoli di Giovanni e i Giudei intorno alla purificazione.	25 Now a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew about purification,
26 E venuti da Giovanni gli dissero: «Rabbi, colui che era con te oltre il Giordano e al quale tu hai reso testimonianza, ecco battezza e tutti accorrono a lui».	26 so they went to John and said, 'Rabbi, the man who was with you on the far side of the Jordan, theman to whom you bore witness, is baptising now, and everyone is going to him.'
27 Giovanni rispose: «L'uomo non può ricevere nulla se non ciò che gli è dato dal cielo.	27 John replied: 'No one can have anything except what is given him from heaven.
28 Voi stessi mi siete testimoni che io ho detto: - Io non sono il Cristo, ma sono stato mandato innanzi a lui. -	28 'You yourselves can bear me out. I said, "I am not the Christ; I am the one who has been sent to go infront of him."
29 Chi ha la sposa è lo sposo; invece l'amico dello sposo, che è presente e l'ascolta, si consola, quando ode la voce dello sposo. Ora questa gioia, che è la mia, è perfetta.	29 'It is the bridegroom who has the bride; and yet the bridegroom's friend, who stands there and listensto him, is fil ed with joy at the bridegroom's voice. This is the joy I feel, and it is complete.
30 Bisogna che egli cresca e che io diminuisca.	30 He must grow greater, I must grow less.
31 Chi viene dall'alto sta sopra a tutti; chi viene dalla terra è dalla terra e parla di terra. Chi viene dal cielo sta sopra a tutti,	31 He who comes from above is above al others; he who is of the earth is earthly himself and speaks inan earthly way. He who comes from heaven
32 e attesta le cose vedute e udite, ma nessuno ne accetta la testimonianza.	32 bears witness to the things he has seen and heard, but his testimony is not accepted by anybody;
33 Chi accetta la testimonianza, conferma che Dio è verace.	33 though anyone who does accept his testimony is attesting that God is true,
34 Infatti colui che Dio ha mandato parla le parole di Dio, perchè Dio gli dà lo Spirito senza misura.	34 since he whom God has sent speaks God's own words, for God gives him the Spirit without reserve.
35 Il Padre ama il Figliuolo e ha posto tutto in sua mano.	35 The Father loves the Son and has entrusted everything to his hands.
36 Chi crede nel Figliuolo ha la vita eterna; ma chi non crede al Figliuolo non vedrà la vita, ma l'ira di Dio dimorerà su di lui».	36 Anyone who believes in the Son has eternal life, but anyone who refuses to believe in the Son willnever see life: God's retribution hangs over him.'
