1 - Quest'altre cose ancora disse il Signore a Mosè nella pianura di Moab, lungo il Giordano, di contro a Gerico:	1 The LORD gave these instructions to Moses on the plains of Moab beside the Jericho stretch of the Jordan:
2 «Ordina a' figli d'Israele che, delle loro possessioni, assegnino ai leviti	2 "Tell the Israelites that out of their hereditary property they shall give the Levites cities for homes, as well as pasture lands around the cities.
3 delle città per abitarvi, coi loro sobborghi all'intorno, acciò essi abitino nelle città e i sobborghi siano per i greggi ed i bestiami;	3 The cities shall serve them to dwell in, and the pasture lands shall serve their herds and flocks and other animals.
4 s'estenderanno fuor delle mura per mille passi all'intorno.	4 The pasture lands of the cities to be assigned the Levites shall extend a thousand cubits from the city walls in each direction.
5 Verso oriente, per duemila cubiti; verso mezzogiorno, similmente per duemila; verso il mare, che è ad occidente, per la stessa misura: e la parte settentrionale finirà alla stessa distanza. Le città saranno nel mezzo, ed i sobborghi al di fuori.	5 Thus you shall measure out two thousand cubits outside the city along each side-east, south, west and north-with the city lying in the center. This shall serve them as the pasture lands of their cities.
6 Di quelle città poi che assegnerete ai leviti, sei saran destinate ad asilo dei fuggiaschi; acciò in esse si rifugi chi avrà sparso del sangue. Ed oltre quelle, [vi saranno pei leviti] altre quarantadue città;	6 "Now these are the cities you shall give to the Levites: the six cities of asylum which you must establish as places where a homicide can take refuge, and in addition forty-two other cities--
7 cioè in tutto, quarantotto città coi loro sobborghi.	7 a total of forty-eight cities with their pasture lands to be assigned the Levites.
8 Di quelle città, che verranno prese di fra le popolazioni dei figli d'Israele, più se ne prenderanno a quelli che più posseggono, e meno a quelli che posseggono meno. Ogni tribù, a seconda della misura de' suoi possedimenti, darà le città pei leviti».	8 In assigning the cities from the property of the Israelites, take more from a larger group and fewer from a smaller one, so that each group will cede cities to the Levites in proportion to its own heritage."
9 Disse il Signore a Mosè:	9 The LORD said to Moses,
10 «Parla ai figli di Israele, e di' loro: - Quando, passato il Giordano, sarete entrati nella terra di Canaan,	10 "Tell the Israelites: When you go across the Jordan into the land of Canaan,
11 stabilite quali città debbon servire di rifugio ai fuggitivi che, senza volere, avranno versato del sangue.	11 select for yourselves cities to serve as cities of asylum, where a homicide who has killed someone unintentionally may take refuge.
12 Nessun parente dell'ucciso potrà uccidere il fuggiasco che è in quella città, sinchè questi non sia comparso dinanzi all'assemblea, e la sua causa venga giudicata.	12 These cities shall serve you as places of asylum from the avenger of blood, so that a homicide shall not be put to death unless he is first tried before the community.
13 Di quelle città poi che son destinate ad asilo de' fuggitivi,	13 Six cities of asylum shall you assign:
14 tre saranno al di là del Giordano, e tre nella terra di Canaan,	14 three beyond the Jordan, and three in the land of Canaan.
15 tanto pei figli di Israele quanto per gli stranieri o avventizi, acciò vi si rifugi chi non volendo ha versato del sangue.	15 These six cities of asylum shall serve not only the Israelites but all the resident or transient aliens among them, so that anyone who has killed another unintentionally may take refuge there.
16 Se uno ha ferito con un'arma, ed il ferito è morto, quegli sarà reo di omicidio, e morirà egli pure.	16 "If a man strikes another with an iron instrument and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.
17 Se avrà scagliato una pietra, ed il colpito è morto, sarà similmente punito.	17 If a man strikes another with a death-dealing stone in his hand and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.
18 Se uno sarà morto perchè percosso con un legno, verrà vendicato col sangue del suo percussore.	18 If a man strikes another with a death-dealing club in his hand and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.
19 Il più prossimo parente dell'ucciso ucciderà l'omicida; l'ucciderà appena l'avrà fra mano.	19 The avenger of blood may execute the murderer, putting him to death on sight.
20 Se uno per odio avrà dato ad un altro una spinta, o maliziosamente gli avrà scagliato qualcosa contro,	20 "If a man pushes another out of hatred, or after lying in wait for him throws something at him, and causes his death,
21 o essendogli nemico lo avrà percosso con le mani, e quegli sarà morto, il percussore sarà reo di omicidio, ed il parente dell'ucciso ucciderà lui appena l'incontrerà.	21 or if he strikes another out of enmity and causes his death, he shall be put to death as a murderer. The avenger of blood may execute the murderer on sight.
22 Ma se senza volere, senz'odio	22 "However, if a man pushes another accidentally and not out of enmity, or if without lying in wait for him he throws some object at him,
23 e senza inimicizia, avrà fatto qualcuna di queste cose,	23 or without seeing him throws a death-dealing stone which strikes him and causes his death, although he was not his enemy nor seeking to harm him:
24 e ciò venga provato dinanzi al popolo, e la questione sia stata discussa fra il percussore ed il parente vendicatore dell'ucciso,	24 then the community, deciding the case between the slayer and the avenger of blood in accordance with these norms,
25 quegli uscirà libero dalle mani del vendicatore, e per sentenza sarà ricondotto nella città dove s'era rifugiato; ivi rimarrà sino alla morte del gran sacerdote consacrato con l'olio santo.	25 shall free the homicide from the avenger of blood and shall remand him to the city of asylum where he took refuge; and he shall stay there until the death of the high priest who has been anointed with sacred oil.
26 Se l'uccisore, fuori dei confini delle città assegnate agli esiliati,	26 If the homicide of his own accord leaves the bounds of the city of asylum where he has taken refuge,
27 verrà incontrato ed ucciso da chi ha da vendicare il sangue versato, il suo uccisore non ne sarà chiamato in colpa,	27 and the avenger of blood finds him beyond these bounds and kills him, the avenger incurs no bloodguilt;
28 perchè il fuggiasco doveva rimanere in quella città sino alla morte del pontefice. Morto che questi sia, l'omicida ritornerà nella sua terra.	28 the homicide was bound to stay in his city of asylum until the death of the high priest. Only after the death of the high priest may the homicide return to his own district.
29 Queste saranno per voi leggi perpetue, dovunque abitiate.	29 "These shall be norms for you and all your descendants, wherever you live, for rendering judgment.
30 L'omicida sarà punito, dopo uditi i testimoni; sulla testimonianza di un solo, nessuno verrà condannato.	30 "Whenever someone kills another, the evidence of witnesses is required for the execution of the murderer. The evidence of a single witness is not sufficient for putting a person to death.
31 Non riceverete prezzo [di riscatto] da chi è reo di sangue; ma senz'altro morrà.	31 "You shall not accept indemnity in place of the life of a murderer who deserves the death penalty; he must be put to death.
32 Gli esuli e fuggitivi non potranno in alcun modo ritornare nelle loro città, prima della morte del pontefice.	32 Nor shall you accept indemnity to allow a refugee to leave his city of asylum and again dwell elsewhere in the land before the death of the high priest.
33 Non macchiate la terra che è vostra abitazione; essa vien macchiata dal sangue degli innocenti, e non può altrimenti esser purificata che col sangue di chi ha versato il sangue altrui. -	33 You shall not desecrate the land where you live. Since bloodshed desecrates the land, the land can have no atonement for the blood shed on it except through the blood of him who shed it.
34 Così resterà monda la terra che è vostra possessione, dove io abito con voi. Io infatti sono il Signore, che abito tra' figli d'Israele».	34 Do not defile the land in which you live and in the midst of which I dwell; for I am the LORD who dwells in the midst of the Israelites."
