1 - Quando Nicanore seppe che Giuda era nelle regioni della Samaria, pensò d’attaccarlo impetuosamente in giorno di sabato.	1 When Nicanor learned that Judas and his companions were in the territory of Samaria, he decided to attack them in all safety on the day of rest.
2 Quei Giudei che erano stati costretti a seguirlo, gli dicevano: « Non far cosa tanto barbara e feroce; rendi onore al giorno santo, e rispetta colui che vede ogni cosa ».	2 The Jews who were forced to follow him pleaded, "Do not massacre them in that way, like a savage barbarian, but show respect for the day which the All-seeing has exalted with holiness above all other days."
3 Ma quello sciagurato domandò se v’ è in cielo qualcuno che abbia comandato d’osservare il sabato.	3 At this the thrice-sinful wretch asked if there was a ruler in heaven who prescribed the keeping of the sabbath day.
4 Risposero: «V’è in cielo, vivo e potente, il Signore medesimo che comandò di celebrare il giorno settimo ».	4 When they replied that there was indeed such a ruler in heaven, the living LORD himself, who commanded the observance of the sabbath day,
5 Ma quegli disse: « Ed io sono potente in terra, e comando di prender le armi, e di condurre a termine gli affari del re ». Tuttavia non giunse ad eseguire il suo disegno.	5 he said, "I, on my part, am ruler on earth, and my orders are that you take up arms and carry out the king's business." Nevertheless he did not succeed in carrying out his cruel plan.
6 Nicanore dunque, al colmo della superbia, già pensava d’erigere per le sue vittorie su Giuda un pubblico trofeo.	6 In his utter boastfulness and arrogance Nicanor had determined to erect a public monument of victory over Judas and his men.
7 Il Maccabeo invece sempre con tutta speranza fidava che Dio gli verrebbe in aiuto;	7 But Maccabeus remained confident, fully convinced that he would receive help from the LORD.
8 ed esortava i suoi a non temere la mossa delle nazioni, ma tener a mente gli aiuti già ricevuti dal cielo; sperassero quindi anche ora, che dall' Onnipotente verrebbe a loro la vittoria.	8 He urged his men not to fear the enemy, but mindful of the help they had received from Heaven in the past, to expect that now, too, victory would be given them by the Almighty.
9 E parlando loro della legge e dei profeti, e ricordando le prove già prima superate, li rese più arditi.	9 By encouraging them with words from the law and the prophets, and by reminding them of the battles they had already won, he filled them with fresh enthusiasm.
10 Sollevati così gli animi loro, anche ricordava la mala fede de' Gentili, e le infrazioni ai fatti giuramenti.	10 Having stirred up their courage, he gave his orders and pointed out at the same time the perfidy of the Gentiles and their violation of oaths.
11 Li armò dunque ad uno ad uno, non munendoli di scudi e di lancia ma di eccellenti discorsi ed esortazioni, e raccontò loro un sogno degno di tutta fede, col quale li rallegrò tutti.	11 When he had armed each of them, not so much with the safety of shield and spear as with the encouragement of noble words, he cheered them all by relating a dream, a kind of vision, worthy of belief.
12 La visione era questa: Onia, ch’era stato sommo sacerdote, uomo giusto e benigno, di venerabile aspetto, dolce nel tratto, ornato nella parola, esercitato fin da fanciullo nelle virtù, levava le mani pregando per tutto il popolo dei Giudei.	12 What he saw was this: Onias, the former high priest, a good and virtuous man, modest in appearance, gentle in manners, distinguished in speech, and trained from childhood in every virtuous practice, was praying with outstretched arms for the whole Jewish community.
13 Quindi era apparso un altro personaggio, venerando per età e gloria, ed intorno a lui una magnifica maestà.	13 Then in the same way another man appeared, distinguished by his white hair and dignity, and with an air about him of extraordinary, majestic authority.
14 Ed Onia, presa la parola, aveva detto: « Questi è l’amico de’fratelli e del popolo di Israele; questi è colui che molto prega per il popolo c per tutta la città santa: Geremia, profeta di Dio».	14 Onias then said of him, "This is God's prophet Jeremiah, who loves his brethren and fervently prays for his people and their holy city."
15 Allora Geremia aveva stesa la destra, e data a Giuda una spada d’oro, dicendo:	15 Stretching out his right hand, Jeremiah presented a gold sword to Judas. As he gave it to him he said,
16 « Ricevi la spada santa dono di Dio, con la quale abbatterai i nemici d’Israele mio popolo ».	16 "Accept this holy sword as a gift from God; with it you shall crush your adversaries."
17 Cosi esortati dagli eccellenti discorsi di Giuda, atti ad accrescer vigore ed a infervorare gli animi dei giovani, risolsero di assalire e combattere da valorosi, di modo che il valore decidesse gli eventi, trattandosi della città santa e del tempio che erano in pericolo.	17 Encouraged by Judas' noble words, which had power to instill valor and stir young hearts to courage, the Jews determined not to delay, but to charge gallantly and decide the issue by hand-to-hand combat with the utmost courage, since their city and its temple with the sacred vessels were in danger.
18 Era infatti minore il pensiero che si davano per le mogli ed i figli, pei fratelli e parenti; il primo e più grande timore era per la santità del tempio.	18 They were not so much concerned about their wives and children or their brothers and kinsmen; their first and foremost fear was for the consecrated sanctuary.
19 Ma anche quelli che erano rimasti in città non stavano in piccola pena per coloro che dovevan combattere.	19 Those who remained in the city suffered a like agony, anxious as they were about the battle in the open country.
20 Stando dunque, tutti in attesa della decisione, i nemici in vista, l’esercito loro schierato, gli elefanti ed i cavalieri ordinati ai luoghi convenienti ;	20 Everyone now awaited the decisive moment. The enemy were already drawing near with their troops drawn up in battle line, their elephants placed in strategic positions, and their cavalry stationed on the flanks.
21 considerando il Maccabeo il numero di quelli che si avanzavano, l’apparato delle varie armi, e la ferocia degli animali, levando le mani al cielo invocò il Signore che fa i prodigi, e che, non secondo la forza delle armi ma secondo che a lui piace, dà la vittoria ai più degni.	21 Maccabeus, contemplating the hosts before him, their elaborate equipment, and the fierceness of their elephants, stretched out his hands toward heaven and called upon the LORD who works miracles; for he knew that it is not through arms but through the LORD'S decision that victory is won by those who deserve it.
22 Pregando, disse così: « Tu, Signore, che a tempo d’ Ezechia re di Giuda mandasti il tuo angelo, e del campo di Sennacherib ne uccidesti centottantacinquemila,	22 He prayed to him thus: "You, O LORD, sent your angel in the days of King Hezekiah of Judea, and he slew a hundred and eighty-five thousand men of Sennacherib's army.
23 manda anche ora, o re del cielo, l’angelo tuo buono innanzi a noi, ad incuter timore e tremor della potenza del tuo braccio,	23 Sovereign of the heavens, send a good angel now to spread fear and dread before us.
24 sicché n’abbiano paura quelli che bestemmiando vengono contro al santo popolo tuo ». Così dunque finì di pregare.	24 By the might of your arm may those be struck down who have blasphemously come against your holy people!" With this he ended his prayer.
25 Nicanore allora ed i suoi si avanzarono a suon di trombe e di canti.	25 Nicanor and his men advanced to the sound of trumpets and battle songs.
26 Giuda ed i suoi, invocato Dio, attaccaron battaglia pregando.	26 But Judas and his men met the army with supplication and prayers.
27 E combattendo sì con la mano, ma col cuore pregando il Signore, abbatterono non meno di trentacinquemila nemici, magnificamente rallegrati dalla presenza di Dio.	27 Fighting with their hands and praying to God with their hearts, they laid low at least thirty-five thousand, and rejoiced greatly over this manifestation of God's power.
28 Quando poi ebber finito, e giubilanti se ne ritornavano, conobbero che Nicanore era caduto colla sua armatura.	28 When the battle was over and they were joyfully departing, they discovered Nicanor lying there in all his armor;
29 Allora alzato un grido, e rumore nella patria lingua benedicevano l’onnipotente Signore.	29 so they raised tumultuous shouts in their native tongue in praise of the divine Sovereign.
30 Giuda allora, che in tutto era sempre stato pronto a dare pei suoi connazionali il corpo e l’animo, comandò che si portasse a Gerusalemme il capo di Nicanore, e la mano tagliata insieme col braccio.	30 Then Judas, who was ever in body and soul the chief defender of his fellow citizens, and had maintained from youth his affection for his countrymen, ordered Nicanor's head and whole right arm to be cut off and taken to Jerusalem.
31 Ivi giunto, convocati i cittadini ed i sacerdoti innanzi all’altare, chiamò anche quelli che erano nella rocca.	31 When he arrived there, he assembled his countrymen, stationed the priests before the altar, and sent for those in the citadel.
32 E mostrò il capo di Nicanore, e l’empia mano che quegli aveva stesa contro la casa santa dell’onnipotente Dio gloriandosi con tanta insolenza.	32 He showed them the vile Nicanor's head and the wretched blasphemer's arm that had been boastfully stretched out against the holy dwelling of the Almighty.
33 Comandò poi che tagliata dello scellerato Nicanore la lingua fosse data a pezzi agli uccelli, e il capo di quell’ insano fosse sospeso di faccia al tempio.	33 He cut out the tongue of the godless Nicanor, saying he would feed it piecemeal to the birds and would hang up the other wages of his folly opposite the temple.
34 Tutti dunque benedissero il Signore del cielo, dicendo: «Benedetto Colui che ha salvato dalla contaminazione la sua dimora! ».	34 At this, everyone looked toward heaven and praised the Lord who manifests his divine power, saying, "Blessed be he who has kept his own Place undefiled!"
35 Fu dunque il capo di Nicanore appeso in cima alla rocca, acciò fosse manifesto ed evidente segno dell’aiuto di Dio.	35 Judas hung up Nicanor's head on the wall of the citadel, a clear and evident proof to all of the Lord's help.
36 Tutti poi di comune accordo decretarono che in nessun modo passasse senza solennità un tal giorno,	36 By public vote it was unanimously decreed never to let this day pass unobserved, but to celebrate it on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, called Adar in Aramaic, the eve of Mordecai's Day.
37 e che si celebrasse la festa ai tredici del mese detto di Adar in lingua siriaca, il giorno avanti al giorno di Mardocheo.	37 Since Nicanor's doings ended in this way, with the city remaining in possession of the Hebrews from that time on, I will bring my own story to an end here too.
38 Compiutisi rispetto a Nicanore questi eventi, essendo da allora in poi la città rimasta in possesso degli Ebrei, anch'io finirò qui il mio discorso.	38 If it is well written and to the point, that is what I wanted; if it is poorly done and mediocre, that is the best I could do.
39 Il quale se procede bene, e come si conviene ad una storia, è quello che anch’ io vorrei; se invece è riuscito meno conveniente, mi si perdoni.	39 Just as it is harmful to drink wine alone or water alone, whereas mixing wine with water makes a more pleasant drink that increases delight, so a skillfully composed story delights the ears of those who read the work. Let this, then, be the end.
40 Come infatti bere sempre vino o sempre acqua non giova, mentre usarne a vicenda è piacevole ; così a chi legge, se il dire è sempre studiato, non riesce gradito. Qui dunque porrò fine.
