1 - E sorse in suo luogo Giuda, detto Maccabeo, suo figlio.	1 Then his son Judas, called Maccabeus, rose up in his stead.
2 Lo coadiuvavano tutti i suoi fratelli, e tutti quelli che s’erano uniti al padre suo, e con letizia combattevano le battaglie d’Israele.	2 And all his brethren helped him, and so did all they that held with his father, and they fought with cheerfulness the battle of Israel.
3 Egli accrebbe la gloria del suo popolo, si vestì di lorica come un gigante, cinse le sue armi per combattere, e con la sua spada difendeva il suo campo.	3 So he gat his people great honour, and put on a breastplate as a giant, and girt his warlike harness about him, and he made battles, protecting the host with his sword.
4 L’opere sue furono come di leone, e, come un leoncello ruggente alla caccia,	4 In his acts he was like a lion, and like a lion's whelp roaring for his prey.
5 perseguitò gl’iniqui andandone in cerca. Quelli che affliggevano il popolo suo, li dette alle fiamme;	5 For He pursued the wicked, and sought them out, and burnt up those that vexed his people.
6 i suoi nemici furon respinti dallo spavento di lui; tutti gli operatori d’iniquità restarono sgomenti, e dalla sua mano uscì la salute.	6 Wherefore the wicked shrunk for fear of him, and all the workers of iniquity were troubled, because salvation prospered in his hand.
7 Procurò affanno a molti re e gioia a Giacobbe con le sue geste; la sua memoria sarà in benedizione ne' secoli.	7 He grieved also many kings, and made Jacob glad with his acts, and his memorial is blessed for ever.
8 Percorse le città di Giuda, disperse gli empii da esse, stornò il flagello da Israele,	8 Moreover he went through the cities of Juda, destroying the ungodly out of them, and turning away wrath from Israel:
9 divenne famoso sino all’estremità della terra, e rimise insieme quelli che stavano per perire.	9 So that he was renowned unto the utmost part of the earth, and he received unto him such as were ready to perish.
10 Allora Apollonio, di fra le genti e dalla Samaria, mise insieme un esercito grande e forte, per far guerra ad Israele,	10 Then Apollonius gathered the Gentiles together, and a great host out of Samaria, to fight against Israel.
11 Giuda lo seppe, e gli uscì incontro, e lo disfece, e l’uccise; molti caddero trafitti, ed i rimanenti fuggirono.	11 Which thing when Judas perceived, he went forth to meet him, and so he smote him, and slew him: many also fell down slain, but the rest fled.
12 Giuda ne ricevè le spoglie, e prese la spada d’Apollonio, e di essa si servì ogni giorno in battaglia.	12 Wherefore Judas took their spoils, and Apollonius' sword also, and therewith he fought all his life long.
13 Seron, capo deH'esercito della Siria, seppe che Giuda aveva messo insieme una compagnia di fedeli, ed una radunata,	13 Now when Seron, a prince of the army of Syria, heard say that Judas had gathered unto him a multitude and company of the faithful to go out with him to war;
14 e disse: « Mi farò un nome, e diverrò famoso nel regno; debellerò Giuda, e quelli che lo seguono, sprezzatorl del comando del re ».	14 He said, I will get me a name and honour in the kingdom; for I will go fight with Judas and them that are with him, who despise the king's commandment.
15 E s’apparecchiò, ed a lui si unirono schiere di empii, aiuti potenti, per far vendetta su' figli d’ Israele,	15 So he made him ready to go up, and there went with him a mighty host of the ungodly to help him, and to be avenged of the children of Israel.
16 e s'avanzarono sino a Betoron. Giuda usci incontro a loro con pochi.	16 And when he came near to the going up of Bethhoron, Judas went forth to meet him with a small company:
17 Perciò, quando questi videro venirsi incontro un esercito, dissero a Giuda: «Come potremo, in pochi, combattere contro una moltitudine si grande e sì forte, essendo anche indeboliti per non avere oggi mangiato? »	17 Who, when they saw the host coming to meet them, said unto Judas, How shall we be able, being so few, to fight against so great a multitude and so strong, seeing we are ready to faint with fasting all this day?
18 Disse Giuda: « Non è difficile che molti restino presi in mano di pochi; nè trova differenza il Dio del cielo per dar la salute, a servirsi di pochi o di molti ;	18 Unto whom Judas answered, It is no hard matter for many to be shut up in the hands of a few; and with the God of heaven it is all one, to deliver with a great multitude, or a small company:
19 perchè vincere in guerra non dipende dal numero de’ combattenti, ma dal valore che viene dal cielo.	19 For the victory of battle standeth not in the multitude of an host; but strength cometh from heaven.
20 Essi ci vengono incontro, moltitudine insolente e superba, per sterminare noi e le nostre mogli ed i nostri figli, e per spogliarci;	20 They come against us in much pride and iniquity to destroy us, and our wives and children, and to spoil us:
21 noi invece combatteremo per le nostre vite e le nostre leggi,	21 But we fight for our lives and our laws.
22 ed il Signore medesimo li schiaccerà sotto i nostri occhi. Voi dunque non ne abbiate paura ».	22 Wherefore the Lord himself will overthrow them before our face: and as for you, be ye not afraid of them.
23 Cessato che ebbe di parlare, di subito gli assalì, e Seron ed il suo esercito rimase sbaragliato dinanzi a lui;	23 Now as soon as he had left off speaking, he leapt suddenly upon them, and so Seron and his host was overthrown before him.
24 Giuda lo inseguì per la discesa di Betoron sino alla pianura, e ne caddero ottocento; gli altri fuggirono nella terra de' Filistei.	24 And they pursued them from the going down of Bethhoron unto the plain, where were slain about eight hundred men of them; and the residue fled into the land of the Philistines.
25 Tutte le nazioni all' intorno ebbero spavento c terrore di Giuda e de' suoi fratelli;	25 Then began the fear of Judas and his brethren, and an exceeding great dread, to fall upon the nations round about them:
26 il nome di lui giunse sino al re, e delle vittorie di Giuda parlavano tutte le genti.	26 Insomuch as his fame came unto the king, and all nations talked of the battles of Judas.
27 Quando seppe queste cose, il re Antioco entrò in furore e mandò a radunare l'esercito di tutto il suo regno, milizia fortissima;	27 Now when king Antiochus heard these things, he was full of indignation: wherefore he sent and gathered together all the forces of his realm, even a very strong army.
28 ed aperto il suo erario, dette all’esercito il soldo d’un anno, comandando che stessero preparati a tutto.	28 He opened also his treasure, and gave his soldiers pay for a year, commanding them to be ready whensoever he should need them.
29 Ma vide che veniva meno il danaro nel suo tesoro, e che pochi erano i tributi di quella regione, a causa del turbamento e della calamità da lui cagionata in quella terra con l'abolire le leggi che vigevano sin dall’antico.	29 Nevertheless, when he saw that the money of his treasures failed and that the tributes in the country were small, because of the dissension and plague, which he had brought upon the land in taking away the laws which had been of old time;
30 Perciò temè di non avere una volta o l’altra più modo di fare spese e donativi, come aveva prima fatto largamente, superando tutti i re stati avanti di lui.	30 He feared that he should not be able to bear the charges any longer, nor to have such gifts to give so liberally as he did before: for he had abounded above the kings that were before him.
31 Costernato dunque grandemente, pensò d'andare in Persia, a prender tributi da quelle regioni, e metter insieme molto danaro.	31 Wherefore, being greatly perplexed in his mind, he determined to go into Persia, there to take the tributes of the countries, and to gather much money.
32 Lasciò Lisia, nobil uomo di stirpe regale, a presiedere al negozii del regno, dal fiume Eufrate al fiume d'Egitto,	32 So he left Lysias, a nobleman, and one of the blood royal, to oversee the affairs of the king from the river Euphrates unto the borders of Egypt:
33 ed educare il figlio suo Antioco sino al suo ritorno.	33 And to bring up his son Antiochus, until he came again.
34 Gli affidò metà dell'esercito, e gli elefanti; e gli dette gli ordini per tutto ciò che voleva, e riguardo agli abitanti della Giudea e di Gerusalemme,	34 Moreover he delivered unto him the half of his forces, and the elephants, and gave him charge of all things that he would have done, as also concerning them that dwelt in Juda and Jerusalem:
35 che mandasse contr’essi un esercito a schiacciare ed estirpare le forze d'Israele, e l'avanzo di Gerusalemme e togliere la loro memoria dal luogo,	35 To wit, that he should send an army against them, to destroy and root out the strength of Israel, and the remnant of Jerusalem, and to take away their memorial from that place;
36 per stabilire abitanti stranieri entro i loro confini, e distribuire a sorte le loro terre.	36 And that he should place strangers in all their quarters, and divide their land by lot.
37 Ed il re, presa seco la rimanente parte dell'esercito, uscì da Antiochia, città del suo regno, l’anno centoquarantasette: traversò il fiume Eufrate, e si dette a percorrere le contrade superiori.	37 So the king took the half of the forces that remained, and departed from Antioch, his royal city, the hundred forty and seventh year; and having passed the river Euphrates, he went through the high countries.
38 Lisia poi elesse Tolomeo figlio di Dorimine, e Nicànore e Gorgia, potenti fra gli amici del re,	38 Then Lysias chose Ptolemee the son of Dorymenes, Nicanor, and Gorgias, mighty men of the king's friends:
39 e mandò con loro quarantamila fanti e settemila cavalieri, acciò entrassero nella terra di Giuda, e la devastassero, conforme il comando del re.	39 And with them he sent forty thousand footmen, and seven thousand horsemen, to go into the land of Juda, and to destroy it, as the king commanded.
40 E vennero avanti con tutte le loro forze, e si accamparono ad Emmaus nella pianura.	40 So they went forth with all their power, and came and pitched by Emmaus in the plain country.
41 Quando i mercanti di quelle regioni seppero di loro, presero con sè argento ed oro in gran quantità, e servi, e vennero al campo, per comprare in schiavi i figli d’Israele. Ed a loro soggiunsero eserciti della Si sia e della terra degli stranieri.	41 And the merchants of the country, hearing the fame of them, took silver and gold very much, with servants, and came into the camp to buy the children of Israel for slaves: a power also of Syria and of the land of the Philistines joined themselves unto them.
42 Giuda dunque ed i suol fratelli videro che si moltipllcavano i mali, e che gli eserciti s’avvicinavano alle frontiere; seppero del comando del re, che ordinava di distruggere ed annientare il popolo	42 Now when Judas and his brethren saw that miseries were multiplied, and that the forces did encamp themselves in their borders: for they knew how the king had given commandment to destroy the people, and utterly abolish them;
43 e si dissero uno all’altro: « Rialziamo il popolo nostro dal suo abbattimento, e combattiamo per il nostro popolo e per le cose sante nostre ».	43 They said one to another, Let us restore the decayed fortune of our people, and let us fight for our people and the sanctuary.
44 Ed indissero un’adunanza acciò si preparassero alla guerra, e pregassero chiedendo misericordia e pietà.	44 Then was the congregation gathered together, that they might be ready for battle, and that they might pray, and ask mercy and compassion.
45 E Gerusalemme non era più abitata, ma era come un deserto; non v’era dei suol cittadini chi andasse e venisse; il luogo santo era profanato, e la cittadella era In mano di stranieri, ridotta ad abitazione delle genti; non v’era più letizia nella casa di Giacobbe, nè più si udiva flauto nè cetra.	45 Now Jerusalem lay void as a wilderness, there was none of her children that went in or out: the sanctuary also was trodden down, and aliens kept the strong hold; the heathen had their habitation in that place; and joy was taken from Jacob, and the pipe with the harp ceased.
46 Si riunirono dunque, e vennero in Masfa, di contro a Gerusalemme, perchè Masfa era già stato in addietro un luogo d’orazione per Israele.	46 Wherefore the Israelites assembled themselves together, and came to Maspha, over against Jerusalem; for in Maspha was the place where they prayed aforetime in Israel.
47 Digiunarono quel giorno, e si vestirono di cilizio, e si sparsero cenere sul capo, e si strapparon le vesti.	47 Then they fasted that day, and put on sackcloth, and cast ashes upon their heads, and rent their clothes,
48 Stesero i volumi della legge, ove i pagani cercavano rassomiglianze con gli idoli loro;	48 And laid open the book of the law, wherein the heathen had sought to paint the likeness of their images.
49 portarono gli ornamenti sacerdotali, le primizie e le decime; chiamarono i nazarei che avevano compito il loro tempo,	49 They brought also the priests' garments, and the firstfruits, and the tithes: and the Nazarites they stirred up, who had accomplished their days.
50 e gridarono a gran voce verso il cielo, dicendo: «Che faremo di costoro, e dove li meneremo?	50 Then cried they with a loud voice toward heaven, saying, What shall we do with these, and whither shall we carry them away?
51 I luoghi santi tuoi son conculcati e contaminati ; i tuoi sacerdoti sono nel pianto e.nell’umiliazione.	51 For thy sanctuary is trodden down and profaned, and thy priests are in heaviness, and brought low.
52 Ecco, le genti hanno fatto lega contro di noi per disperderci; tu sai che cosa macchinano a nostro danno.	52 And lo, the heathen are assembled together against us to destroy us: what things they imagine against us, thou knowest.
53 Come potremo noi sorreggerci dinanzi a loro, se tu, o Dio, non ci aiuti? ».	53 How shall we be able to stand against them, except thou, O God, be our help?
54 E dettero nelle trombe a gran fiato.	54 Then sounded they with trumpets, and cried with a loud voice.
55 Dopo dò Giuda stabilì i condottieri della sua gente: capi di mille, di cento, di cinquanta, e di dieci.	55 And after this Judas ordained captains over the people, even captains over thousands, and over hundreds, and over fifties, and over tens.
56 E disse a quelli che avevano da fabbricar case, o da prender moglie, o da piantar vigne, ed ai paurosi, che tornassero ciascuno a casa sua, secondo la legge.	56 But as for such as were building houses, or had betrothed wives, or were planting vineyards, or were fearful, those he commanded that they should return, every man to his own house, according to the law.
57 Poi levarono campo, e lo trasportarono a mezzogiorno di Emmaus.	57 So the camp removed, and pitched upon the south side of Emmaus.
58 E disse Giuda: «Armatevi, siate uomini forti, e state preparati per domattina, per combattere contro queste genti, che si son riunite contro di noi, per disperdere noi e le cose sante nostre.	58 And Judas said, arm yourselves, and be valiant men, and see that ye be in readiness against the morning, that ye may fight with these nations, that are assembled together against us to destroy us and our sanctuary:
59 È meglio per noi morire in battaglia, che vedere i mali del nostro popolo e del santuario.	59 For it is better for us to die in battle, than to behold the calamities of our people and our sanctuary.
60 Ma come è volontà del cielo, così sia ».	60 Nevertheless, as the will of God is in heaven, so let him do.
