| 1 - Ora avvenne, l'anno ventesimo del re Artaserse, nel mese di Nisan, che, essendogli portato il vino, io presi questo vino, e lo porsi al re. Ma io stavo dinanzi a lui come uno che langue. | 1 In the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was before him, I took up the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad in his presence. |
| 2 Mi disse il re: «Perchè sei triste di aspetto, mentre non veggo che tu sii malato? Certo, non è senza motivo; ma io non so qual male tu porti nel cuore». Io mi spaventai oltre modo, | 2 And the king said to me, "Why is your face sad, seeing you are not sick? This is nothing else but sadness of the heart." Then I was very much afraid. |
| 3 e dissi al re: «Vivi in eterno, o re! Come potrebbe non esser mesto il mio aspetto, mentre la città che è il luogo de' sepolcri de' padri miei trovasi deserta, e le sue porte sono consunte dal fuoco?». | 3 I said to the king, "Let the king live for ever! Why should not my face be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lies waste, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?" |
| 4 E il re mi disse: «Che cosa vorresti?». Io invocai il Dio del cielo, | 4 Then the king said to me, "For what do you make request?" So I prayed to the God of heaven. |
| 5 e dissi al re: «Se al re par bene, e se il tuo servo trova favore innanzi a te, mandami nella Giudea, alla città dov'è il sepolcro del padre mio, a riedificarla». | 5 And I said to the king, "If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, that you send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may rebuild it." |
| 6 Mi disse il re, e la regina che sedeva presso di lui: «Quanto tempo durerà il tuo viaggio, e quando ritornerai?». Ed io assegnai il tempo, | 6 And the king said to me (the queen sitting beside him), "How long will you be gone, and when will you return?" So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time. |
| 7 e dissi al re: «Se al re par bene, mi dia lettere pei governatori delle regioni di là dal fiume, affinchè mi facciano scortare sino in Giudea; | 7 And I said to the king, "If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors of the province Beyond the River, that they may let me pass through until I come to Judah; |
| 8 ed una lettera per Asaf, custode dei boschi del re, affinchè mi dia legna per rifare le porte della torre del tempio, e le mura della città, e la casa dove abiterò». Ed il re me le dette, poichè la mano del mio Dio era con me. | 8 and a letter to Asaph, the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the fortress of the temple, and for the wall of the city, and for the house which I shall occupy." And the king granted me what I asked, for the good hand of my God was upon me. |
| 9 Venni dunque ai governatori delle regioni di là dal fiume, e detti loro le lettere del re. Ed il re aveva mandato meco dei capi di milizia, e de' cavalieri. | 9 Then I came to the governors of the province Beyond the River, and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent with me officers of the army and horsemen. |
| 10 Quando ciò seppero Sanaballat Oronita, e Tobia servo Ammanita, s'ebbero grandemente a male che fosse arrivato uno il quale cercava la prosperità de' figli d'Israele. | 10 But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard this, it displeased them greatly that some one had come to seek the welfare of the children of Israel. |
| 11 Arrivai dunque a Gerusalemme, e stetti fermo tre giorni. | 11 So I came to Jerusalem and was there three days. |
| 12 Poi, la notte, m'alzai, e presi con me pochi uomini; a nessuno feci sapere ciò che Dio m'aveva messo in cuore di fare per Gerusalemme; nè avevo con me altro giumento che quello sul quale sedevo. | 12 Then I arose in the night, I and a few men with me; and I told no one what my God had put into my heart to do for Jerusalem. There was no beast with me but the beast on which I rode. |
| 13 Uscii di notte per la porta della Valle, e fui davanti alla fonte del Dragone ed alla porta Stercoraria; e rimiravo le mura di Gerusalemme in rovina, e le sue porte consunte dal fuoco. | 13 I went out by night by the Valley Gate to the Jackal's Well and to the Dung Gate, and I inspected the walls of Jerusalem which were broken down and its gates which had been destroyed by fire. |
| 14 Passai alla porta della Fonte, ed all'acquedotto del Re; e non v'era posto da potervi passare la cavalcatura sulla quale sedevo. | 14 Then I went on to the Fountain Gate and to the King's Pool; but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass. |
| 15 Salii, di notte, lungo il torrente, per osservar la muraglia; rientrai per la porta della Valle, e fui di ritorno. | 15 Then I went up in the night by the valley and inspected the wall; and I turned back and entered by the Valley Gate, and so returned. |
| 16 I magistrati però non sapevano dove fossi andato, nè che cosa volessi fare; ed anche ai Giudei, sacerdoti, ottimati, magistrati, ed a tutti quelli addetti ai lavori, niente sino a questo momento aveva fatto sapere. | 16 And the officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing; and I had not yet told the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the officials, and the rest that were to do the work. |
| 17 Allora però dissi: «Voi sapete in qual afflizione ci troviamo; che Gerusalemme è deserta, e le porte sue son consunte dal fuoco. Su via; rialziamo le mura di Gerusalemme, e non stiamo più oltre nell'abiezione». | 17 Then I said to them, "You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer disgrace." |
| 18 Raccontai loro dell'aiuto del mio Dio che si era fatto sentire su me, e le parole che il re m'aveva detto, e conchiusi: «Andiamo, e fabbrichiamo!». E quelli presero coraggio. | 18 And I told them of the hand of my God which had been upon me for good, and also of the words which the king had spoken to me. And they said, "Let us rise up and build." So they strengthened their hands for the good work. |
| 19 Quando ciò udirono Sanaballat Oronita, Tobia servo Ammanita, e Gosem Arabo, ci derisero, ci disprezzarono, e ci dissero: «Che cosa fate voi? Forse volete ribellarvi al re?». | 19 But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arab heard of it, they derided us and despised us and said, "What is this thing that you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?" |
| 20 Ma io pigliai la parola, e dissi loro: «Il Dio del cielo, egli stesso ci aiuta, e noi siamo suoi servi. Andiamo avanti, e fabbrichiamo. Quanto a voi, non avete parte nè diritto nè ricordanza in Gerusalemme». | 20 Then I replied to them, "The God of heaven will make us prosper, and we his servants will arise and build; but you have no portion or right or memorial in Jerusalem." |
