1 Per i tuoi santi invece c’era una luce grandissima; quegli altri, sentendone le voci, senza vederne l’aspetto, li proclamavano beati, perché non avevano sofferto come loro	1 For your holy ones, however, there was a very great light. The Egyptians, who could hear them but notsee them, cal ed them fortunate because they had not suffered too;
2 e li ringraziavano perché non nuocevano loro, pur avendo subìto un torto, e imploravano perdono delle passate inimicizie.	2 they thanked them for doing no injury in return for previous wrongs and asked forgiveness for theirpast il -wil .
3 Invece desti loro una colonna di fuoco, come guida di un viaggio sconosciuto e sole inoffensivo per un glorioso migrare in terra straniera.	3 In contrast to the darkness, you gave your people a pil ar of blazing fire to guide them on theirunknown journey, a mild sun for their ambitious migration.
4 Meritavano di essere privati della luce e imprigionati nelle tenebre quelli che avevano tenuto chiusi in carcere i tuoi figli, per mezzo dei quali la luce incorruttibile della legge doveva essere concessa al mondo.	4 But well those others deserved to be deprived of light and imprisoned in darkness, for they had kept incaptivity your children, by whom the incorruptible light of the Law was to be given to the world.
5 Poiché essi avevano deliberato di uccidere i neonati dei santi – e un solo bambino fu esposto e salvato –, tu per castigo hai tolto di mezzo la moltitudine dei loro figli, facendoli perire tutti insieme nell’acqua impetuosa.	5 As they had resolved to kill the infants of the holy ones, and as of those exposed only one child hadbeen saved, you punished them by carrying off their horde of children and by destroying them al in the wildwater.
6 Quella notte fu preannunciata ai nostri padri, perché avessero coraggio, sapendo bene a quali giuramenti avevano prestato fedeltà.	6 That night had been known in advance to our ancestors, so that, wel knowing him in whom they hadput their trust, they would be sure of his promises.
7 Il tuo popolo infatti era in attesa della salvezza dei giusti, della rovina dei nemici.	7 Your people thus were waiting both for the rescue of the upright and for the ruin of the enemy;
8 Difatti come punisti gli avversari, così glorificasti noi, chiamandoci a te.	8 for by the very vengeance that you exacted on our adversaries, you glorified us by calling us to you.
9 I figli santi dei giusti offrivano sacrifici in segreto e si imposero, concordi, questa legge divina: di condividere allo stesso modo successi e pericoli, intonando subito le sacre lodi dei padri.	9 So the holy children of the good offered sacrifice in secret and with one accord enacted this holy law:that the holy ones should share good things and dangers alike; and forthwith they chanted the hymns of theancestors.
10 Faceva eco il grido discorde dei nemici e si diffondeva il lamento di quanti piangevano i figli.	10 In echo came the discordant cries of their enemies, and the pitiful wails of people mourning for theirchildren could be heard from far away.
11 Con la stessa pena il servo era punito assieme al padrone, l’uomo comune soffriva le stesse pene del re.	11 One and the same punishment had struck slave and master alike, and now commoner and king hadthe same sufferings to endure.
12 Tutti insieme, nello stesso modo, ebbero innumerevoli morti, e i vivi non bastavano a seppellirli, perché in un istante fu sterminata la loro prole più nobile.	12 Struck by the same death, al had innumerable dead. There were not enough living left to bury them,for, at one stroke, the flower of their offspring had perished.
13 Quanti erano rimasti increduli a tutto per via delle loro magie, allo sterminio dei primogeniti confessarono che questo popolo era figlio di Dio.	13 Those whose spel s had made them completely incredulous, when faced with the destruction of theirfirst-born, acknowledged this people to be child of God.
14 Mentre un profondo silenzio avvolgeva tutte le cose, e la notte era a metà del suo rapido corso,	14 When peaceful silence lay over all, and night had run the half of her swift course,
15 la tua parola onnipotente dal cielo, dal tuo trono regale, guerriero implacabile, si lanciò in mezzo a quella terra di sterminio, portando, come spada affilata, il tuo decreto irrevocabile	15 down from the heavens, from the royal throne, leapt your al -powerful Word like a pitiless warrior intothe heart of a land doomed to destruction. Carrying your unambiguous command like a sharp sword,
16 e, fermatasi, riempì tutto di morte; toccava il cielo e aveva i piedi sulla terra.	16 it stood, and fil ed the universe with death; though standing on the earth, it touched the sky.
17 Allora improvvisi fantasmi di sogni terribili li atterrivano e timori inattesi piombarono su di loro.	17 Immediately, dreams and gruesome visions overwhelmed them with terror, unexpected fearsassailed them.
18 Cadendo mezzi morti qua e là, mostravano quale fosse la causa della loro morte.	18 Hurled down, some here, some there, half dead, they were able to say why they were dying;
19 Infatti i loro sogni terrificanti li avevano preavvisati, perché non morissero ignorando il motivo delle loro sofferenze.	19 for the dreams that had troubled them had warned them why beforehand, so that they should notperish without knowing why they were being afflicted.
20 L’esperienza della morte colpì anche i giusti e nel deserto ci fu il massacro di una moltitudine, ma l’ira non durò a lungo,	20 Experience of death, however, touched the upright too, and a great many were struck down in thedesert. But the Retribution did not last long,
21 perché un uomo irreprensibile si affrettò a difenderli, avendo portato le armi del suo ministero, la preghiera e l’incenso espiatorio; si oppose alla collera e mise fine alla sciagura, mostrando di essere il tuo servitore.	21 for a blameless man hurried to their defence. Wielding the weapons of his sacred office, prayer andexpiating incense, he confronted Retribution and put an end to the plague, thus showing that he was yourservant.
22 Egli vinse la collera divina non con la forza del corpo né con la potenza delle armi, ma con la parola placò colui che castigava, ricordando i giuramenti e le alleanze dei padri.	22 He overcame Hostility, not by physical strength, nor by force of arms; but by word he prevailed overthe Punisher, by recal ing the oaths made to the Fathers, and the covenants.
23 Quando ormai i morti erano caduti a mucchi gli uni sugli altri, egli, ergendosi là in mezzo, arrestò l’ira e le tagliò la strada che conduceva verso i viventi.	23 Already the corpses lay piled in heaps, when he interposed and beat Retribution back and cut off itsapproach to the living.
24 Sulla sua veste lunga fino ai piedi portava tutto il mondo, le glorie dei padri scolpite su quattro file di pietre preziose e la tua maestà sopra il diadema della sua testa.	24 For the whole world was on his flowing robe, the glorious names of the Fathers engraved on the fourrows of stones, and your Majesty on the diadem on his head.
25 Di fronte a queste insegne lo sterminatore indietreggiò, ebbe paura, perché bastava questa sola prova dell’ira divina.	25 From these the Destroyer recoiled, he was afraid of these. This one experience of Retribution wasenough.
