BIBBIA CEI 2008	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Allora Giuditta cadde con la faccia a terra, sparse cenere sul capo, mise allo scoperto il cilicio di cui era rivestita e, nell’ora in cui nel tempio di Dio a Gerusalemme veniva offerto l’incenso della sera, supplicò a gran voce il Signore:	1 Judith threw herself face to the ground, scattered ashes on her head, undressed as far as the sackclothshe was wearing and cried loudly to the Lord. At the same time in Jerusalem the evening incense was beingoffered in the Temple of God. Judith said:
2 «Signore, Dio del padre mio Simeone, tu hai messo nella sua mano una spada per fare vendetta degli stranieri, che avevano sciolto la cintura d’una vergine per contaminarla, ne avevano denudato i fianchi a sua vergogna e ne avevano contaminato il grembo per disonorarla. Tu avevi detto: “Questo non si deve fare!”. Ma essi l’hanno fatto.	2 Lord, God of my ancestor Simeon, you armed him with a sword to take vengeance on the foreigners whohad undone a virgin's belt to her shame, laid bare her thigh to her confusion, violated her womb to herdishonour, since, though you said, 'This must not be,' they did it.
3 Per questo hai consegnato alla morte i loro capi e quel giaciglio, usato con l’inganno, con l’inganno fu bagnato del loro sangue; hai abbattuto gli schiavi insieme ai loro capi e i capi sui loro troni.	3 For this you handed their leaders over to slaughter, and their bed, defiled by their treachery, was itselfbetrayed in blood. You struck the slaves with the chieftains and the chieftains with their retainers.
4 Hai destinato le loro mogli alla preda, le loro figlie alla schiavitù, tutte le loro spoglie alla divisione tra i figli da te prediletti, perché costoro, accesi del tuo zelo, erano rimasti inorriditi della profanazione del loro sangue e ti avevano chiamato in aiuto. O Dio, mio Dio, ascolta anche me che sono vedova.	4 You left their wives to be carried off, their daughters to be taken captive, and their spoils to be shared outamong the sons you loved, who had been so zealous for you, had loathed the stain put on their blood and cal edon you for help. O God, my God, now hear this widow too;
5 Tu hai fatto ciò che precedette quelle vicende, le vicende stesse e ciò che seguì. Tu hai stabilito le cose presenti e le future e quello che tu hai progettato si è compiuto.	5 for you have made the past, and what is happening now, and what will fol ow. What is, what wil be, youhave planned; what has been, you designed.
6 Le cose da te deliberate si sono presentate e hanno detto: “Eccoci!”. Perché tutte le tue vie sono preparate in anticipo e i tuoi giudizi sono preordinati.	6 Your purposes stood forward; 'See, here we are!' they said. For al your ways are prepared and yourjudgements delivered with foreknowledge.
7 Ecco, infatti, gli Assiri si sono esaltati nella loro potenza, vanno in superbia per i loro cavalli e i cavalieri, si vantano della forza dei loro fanti, poggiano la loro speranza sugli scudi e sulle lance, sugli archi e sulle fionde, e non sanno che tu sei il Signore, che stronchi le guerre.	7 See the Assyrians, with their army abounding glorying in their horses and their riders, exulting in thestrength of their infantry. Trust as they may in shield and spear, in bow and sling, in you they have notrecognised the Lord, the breaker of battle-lines;
8 Signore è il tuo nome. Abbatti la loro forza con la tua potenza e rovescia la loro violenza con la tua ira: hanno deciso di profanare il tuo santuario, di contaminare la Dimora dove riposa il tuo nome glorioso, di abbattere con il ferro i corni del tuo altare.	8 yours alone is the title of Lord. Break their violence with your might, in your anger bring down theirstrength. For they plan to profane your holy places, to defile the tabernacle, the resting place of your gloriousname, and to hack down the horn of your altar.
9 Guarda la loro superbia, fa’ scendere la tua ira sulle loro teste, metti nella mia mano di vedova la forza di fare quello che ho pensato.	9 Observe their arrogance, send your fury on their heads, give the strength I have in mind to this widow'shand.
10 Con la lusinga delle mie labbra abbatti lo schiavo con il suo padrone e il padrone con il suo servo; spezza la loro alterigia per mezzo di una donna.	10 By guile of my lips strike down slave with master, and master with retainer. Break their pride by awoman's hand.
11 La tua forza, infatti, non sta nel numero, né sui forti si regge il tuo regno: tu sei invece il Dio degli umili, sei il soccorritore dei piccoli, il rifugio dei deboli, il protettore degli sfiduciati, il salvatore dei disperati.	11 Your strength does not lie in numbers, nor your might in strong men; since you are the God of thehumble, the help of the oppressed, the support of the weak, the refuge of the forsaken, the Saviour of thedespairing.
12 Sì, sì, Dio di mio padre, Dio dell’eredità d’Israele, Signore dei cieli e della terra, creatore delle acque, re di tutte le tue creature, ascolta la mia preghiera!	12 Please, please, God of my father, God of the heritage of Israel, Master of heaven and earth, Creator ofthe waters, King of your whole creation, hear my prayer.
13 Fa’ che la mia parola lusinghiera diventi piaga e flagello di costoro, che fanno progetti crudeli contro la tua alleanza e il tuo tempio consacrato, contro la vetta di Sion e la sede dei tuoi figli.	13 Give me a beguiling tongue to wound and kill those who have formed such cruel designs against yourcovenant, against your holy dwelling-place, against Mount Zion, against the house belonging to your sons.
14 Da’ a tutto il tuo popolo e a ogni tribù la prova che sei tu il Signore, il Dio di ogni potere e di ogni forza, e non c’è altri, all’infuori di te, che possa proteggere la stirpe d’Israele».	14 And demonstrate to every nation, every tribe, that you are the Lord, God of al power, al might, and thatthe race of Israel has no protector but you.
