1 Così Tobi terminò il suo canto di ringraziamento.	1 The end of the hymns of Tobit. Tobit died when he was a hundred and twelve years old and receivedan honourable burial in Nineveh.
2 Tobi morì in pace all’età di centododici anni e fu sepolto con onore a Ninive. Egli aveva sessantadue anni quando divenne cieco; dopo la sua guarigione visse nella prosperità, praticò l’elemosina e continuò sempre a benedire Dio e a celebrare la sua grandezza.	2 He had been sixty-two when he went blind; and after his cure, he lived in comfort, practisingalmsgiving and continual y praising God and extol ing his greatness.
3 Quando stava per morire, chiamò il figlio Tobia e gli diede queste istruzioni:	3 When he was at the point of death he summoned his son Tobias and gave him these instructions,
4 «Figlio, porta via i tuoi figli e rifùgiati in Media, perché io credo alla parola di Dio che Naum ha pronunciato su Ninive. Tutto dovrà accadere, tutto si realizzerà sull’Assiria e su Ninive, come hanno predetto i profeti d’Israele, inviati da Dio; non una delle loro parole andrà a vuoto. Ogni cosa si realizzerà a suo tempo. Vi sarà maggior sicurezza in Media che in Assiria o in Babilonia. Perché io so e credo che quanto Dio ha detto si compirà e avverrà, e non andrà a vuoto alcuna delle sue parole. I nostri fratelli che abitano il paese d’Israele saranno tutti dispersi e deportati lontano dalla loro amata terra e tutto il paese d’Israele sarà ridotto a un deserto. Anche Samaria e Gerusalemme diventeranno un deserto e il tempio di Dio sarà nell’afflizione e resterà bruciato fino a un certo tempo.	4 'My son, take your children and hurry away to Media, since I believe the word of God pronounced overNineveh by Nahum. Everything wil come true, everything happen that the emissaries of God, the prophets ofIsrael, have predicted against Assyria and Nineveh; not one of their words wil prove empty. It will al take placein due time. You wil be safer in Media than in Assyria or in Babylonia. Since I for my part know and believe thateverything God has said wil come true; so it will be, and not a word of the prophecies will fail. 'A census will betaken of our brothers living in the land of Israel and they wil be exiled far from their own fair country. The entireterritory of Israel wil become a desert, and Samaria and Jerusalem wil become a desert, and the house of God,for a time, wil be laid waste and burnt.
5 Poi di nuovo Dio avrà pietà di loro e li ricondurrà nella terra d’Israele. Essi ricostruiranno il tempio, ma non uguale al primo, fino al momento in cui si compirà il tempo stabilito. Dopo, torneranno tutti dall’esilio e ricostruiranno Gerusalemme nella sua magnificenza, e il tempio di Dio sarà ricostruito, come hanno preannunciato i profeti d’Israele.	5 Then once again God wil take pity on them and bring them back to the land of Israel. They wil rebuildhis house, although it wil be less beautiful than the first, until the time is fulfil ed. But after this, al will return fromcaptivity and rebuild Jerusalem in al her glory, and the house of God wil be rebuilt within her as the prophets of Israel have foretold.
6 Tutte le nazioni che si trovano su tutta la terra si convertiranno e temeranno Dio nella verità. Tutti abbandoneranno i loro idoli, che li hanno fatti errare nella menzogna, e benediranno il Dio dei secoli nella giustizia.	6 And all the people of the whole earth wil be converted and wil reverence God with all sincerity. Al willrenounce their false gods who have led them astray into error,
7 Tutti gli Israeliti che saranno scampati in quei giorni e si ricorderanno di Dio con sincerità, si raduneranno e verranno a Gerusalemme, e per sempre abiteranno tranquilli la terra di Abramo, che sarà data loro in possesso. Coloro che amano Dio nella verità gioiranno; coloro invece che commettono il peccato e l’ingiustizia spariranno da tutta la terra.	7 and will bless the God of ages in uprightness. Al the Israelites spared in those days wil rememberGod in sincerity of heart. They wil come and gather in Jerusalem and thereafter dwel securely in the land ofAbraham, which will be theirs. And those who sincerely love God wil rejoice. And those who commit sin andwickedness will vanish from the earth.
8 Ora, figli, vi raccomando: servite Dio nella verità e fate ciò che a lui piace. Anche ai vostri figli insegnate a fare la giustizia e l’elemosina, a ricordarsi di Dio, a benedire il suo nome in ogni tempo, nella verità e con tutte le forze.	8 'And now, my children, I lay this duty on you; serve God sincerely, and do what is pleasing to him. Andlay on your children the obligation to behave uprightly, to give alms, to keep God in mind and to bless his namealways, sincerely and with all their might.
9 Tu dunque, figlio, parti da Ninive, non restare più qui. Dopo aver sepolto tua madre vicino a me, quel giorno stesso non devi più restare entro i confini di Ninive. Vedo infatti trionfare in essa molta ingiustizia e grande perfidia, e nessuno se ne vergogna.	9 'So then, my son, leave Nineveh, do not stay here.
10 Vedi, figlio, quanto ha fatto Nadab al padre adottivo Achikàr. Non è stato egli costretto a scendere ancora vivo sotto terra? Ma Dio ha rigettato l’infamia in faccia al colpevole: Achikàr ritornò alla luce, mentre Nadab entrò nelle tenebre eterne, perché aveva cercato di uccidere Achikàr. Per aver praticato l’elemosina, Achikàr sfuggì al laccio mortale che gli aveva teso Nadab; Nadab invece cadde in quel laccio, che lo fece perire.	10 As soon as you have buried your mother next to me, go the same day, whenever it may be, and donot linger in this country where I see wickedness and perfidy unashamedly triumphant. Consider, my child, althe things done by Nadab to his foster-father Ahikar. Was not Ahikar forced to go underground, though still aliving man? But God made the criminal pay for his outrage before his victim's eyes, since Ahikar came back tothe light of day, while Nadab went down to everlasting darkness in punishment for plotting against Ahikar's life.Because of his good works Ahikar escaped the deadly snare Nadab had laid for him, and Nadab fel into it to hisown ruin.
11 Così, figli miei, vedete dove conduce l’elemosina e dove conduce l’iniquità: essa conduce alla morte. Ma ecco, mi manca il respiro!». Essi lo distesero sul letto; morì e fu sepolto con onore.	11 So, my children, you see what comes of almsgiving, and what wickedness leads to, I mean to death.But now breath fails me.' They laid him back on his bed; he died and was buried with honour.
12 Quando morì la madre, Tobia la seppellì vicino al padre, poi partì per la Media con la moglie e i figli. Abitò a Ecbàtana, presso Raguele suo suocero.	12 When his mother died, Tobias buried her beside his father. Then he left for Media with his wife andchildren. He lived in Ecbatana with Raguel, his father-in-law.
13 Curò con onore i suoceri nella loro vecchiaia e li seppellì a Ecbàtana in Media. Tobia ereditò il patrimonio di Raguele e quello del padre Tobi.	13 He treated the ageing parents of his wife with every care and respect, and later buried them inEcbatana in Media. Tobias inherited the patrimony of Raguel besides that of his father Tobit.
14 Morì all’età di centodiciassette anni onorato da tutti.	14 Much honoured, he lived to the age of a hundred and seventeen years.
15 Prima di morire sentì parlare della rovina di Ninive e vide i prigionieri che venivano deportati in Media per opera di Achikàr, re della Media. Allora benedisse Dio per quanto aveva fatto nei confronti degli abitanti di Ninive e dell’Assiria. Prima di morire poté dunque gioire della sorte di Ninive e benedisse il Signore Dio nei secoli dei secoli.	15 Before he died he witnessed the ruin of Nineveh. He saw the Ninevites taken prisoner and deportedto Media by Cyaxares king of Media. He blessed God for everything he inflicted on the Ninevites and Assyrians.Before his death he had the opportunity of rejoicing over the fate of Nineveh, and he blessed the Lord God forever and ever. Amen.
