1 Quando Ioas divenne re aveva sette anni; regnò quarant'anni in Gerusalemme. Sua madre, di Bersabea, si chiamava Sibia.	1 Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother, named Zibiah, was from Beer-sheba.
2 Ioas fece ciò che è retto agli occhi del Signore finché visse il sacerdote Ioiadà.	2 Joash did what was pleasing to the LORD as long as Jehoiada the priest lived.
3 Ioiadà gli diede due mogli ed egli generò figli e figlie.	3 Jehoiada provided him with two wives, and he became the father of sons and daughters.
4 In seguito, Ioas decise di restaurare il tempio.	4 After some time, Joash decided to restore the LORD'S temple.
5 Radunò i sacerdoti e i leviti e disse loro: "Andate nelle città di Giuda e raccogliete ogni anno da tutti gli Israeliti denaro per restaurare il tempio del vostro Dio. Cercate di sollecitare il lavoro". Ma i leviti non mostrarono nessuna fretta.	5 He called together the priests and Levites and said to them: "Go out to all the cities of Judah and collect money from all Israel that you may repair the house of your God over the years. You must hasten this affair." But the Levites did not hasten.
6 Allora il re convocò Ioiadà loro capo e gli disse: "Perché non hai richiesto dai leviti che portassero da Giuda e da Gerusalemme la tassa prescritta da Mosè servo del Signore e fissata dall'assemblea di Israele per la tenda della testimonianza?	6 Then the king summoned Jehoiada, who was in charge, and said to him: "Why have you not required the Levites to bring in from Judah and Jerusalem the tax levied by Moses, the servant of the LORD, and by the assembly of Israel, for the tent of the testimony?"
7 L'empia Atalia, infatti, e i suoi adepti hanno dilapidato il tempio di Dio; perfino tutte le cose consacrate del tempio hanno adoperato per i Baal".	7 For the wicked Athaliah and her sons had damaged the house of God and had even turned over to the Baals the dedicated resources of the LORD'S temple.
8 Per ordine del re fecero una cassa, che posero davanti alla porta del tempio.	8 At the king's command, therefore, they made a chest, which they put outside the gate of the LORD'S temple.
9 Quindi fecero un proclama in Giuda e in Gerusalemme perché si portasse al Signore la tassa imposta da Mosè servo di Dio a Israele nel deserto.	9 They had it proclaimed throughout Judah and Jerusalem that the tax which Moses, the servant of God, had imposed on Israel in the desert should be brought to the LORD.
10 Tutti i capi e tutto il popolo si rallegrarono e portarono il denaro che misero nella cassa fino a riempirla.	10 All the princes and the people rejoiced; they brought what was asked and cast it into the chest until it was filled.
11 Quando la cassa veniva portata per l'ispezione reale affidata ai leviti ed essi vedevano che c'era molto denaro, allora veniva lo scriba del re e l'ispettore nominato dal sommo sacerdote, vuotavano la cassa, quindi la prendevano e la ricollocavano al suo posto. Facevano così ogni giorno e così misero insieme molto denaro.	11 Whenever the chest was brought to the royal officials by the Levites and they saw that it contained much money, the royal scribe and an overseer for the high priest came, emptied the chest, then took it back and returned it to its place. This they did day after day until they had collected a large sum of money.
12 Il re e Ioiadà lo diedero ai dirigenti dei lavori addetti al tempio ed essi impegnarono scalpellini e falegnami per le riparazioni del tempio; anche lavoratori del ferro e del bronzo si misero al lavoro per riparare il tempio.	12 Then the king and Jehoiada gave it to the workmen in charge of the labor on the LORD'S temple, who hired masons and carpenters to restore the temple, and also iron-and bronze-smiths to repair it.
13 I dirigenti dei lavori si mostrarono molto attivi; per la loro opera le riparazioni progredirono; essi riportarono il tempio di Dio allo stato di una volta e lo consolidarono.	13 The workmen labored, and the task of restoration progressed under their hands. They restored the house of God according to its original form, and reinforced it.
14 Quando ebbero finito, portarono davanti al re e a Ioiadà il resto del denaro e con esso fecero arredi per il tempio: vasi per il servizio liturgico e per gli olocausti, coppe e altri oggetti d'oro e d'argento. Finché visse Ioiadà, si offrirono sempre olocausti nel tempio.	14 After they had finished, they brought the rest of the money to the king and to Jehoiada, who had it made into utensils for the LORD'S temple, utensils for the service and the holocausts, and basins and other gold and silver utensils. They offered holocausts in the LORD'S temple continually throughout the lifetime of Jehoiada.
15 Ma Ioiadà, divenuto vecchio e sazio di anni, morì a centotrenta anni.	15 Jehoiada lived to a ripe old age; he was a hundred and thirty years old when he died.
16 Lo seppellirono nella città di Davide con i re, perché aveva agito bene in Israele per il servizio del Signore e per il suo tempio.	16 He was buried in the City of David with the kings, because he had done good in Israel, in particular with respect to God and his temple.
17 Dopo la morte di Ioiadà, i capi di Giuda andarono a prostrarsi davanti al re, che allora diede loro ascolto.	17 After the death of Jehoiada, the princes of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and the king then listened to them.
18 Costoro trascurarono il tempio del Signore Dio dei loro padri, per venerare i pali sacri e gli idoli. Per questa loro colpa si scatenò l'ira di Dio su Giuda e su Gerusalemme.	18 They forsook the temple of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and began to serve the sacred poles and the idols; and because of this crime of theirs, wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem.
19 Il Signore mandò loro profeti perché li facessero ritornare a lui. Essi comunicarono loro il proprio messaggio, ma non furono ascoltati.	19 Although prophets were sent to them to convert them to the LORD, the people would not listen to their warnings.
20 Allora lo spirito di Dio investì Zaccaria, figlio del sacerdote Ioiadà, che si alzò in mezzo al popolo e disse: "Dice Dio: perché trasgredite i comandi del Signore? Per questo non avete successo; poiché avete abbandonato il Signore, anch'egli vi abbandona".	20 Then the spirit of God possessed Zechariah, son of Jehoiada the priest. He took his stand above the people and said to them: "God says, 'Why are you transgressing the LORD'S commands, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have abandoned the LORD, he has abandoned you.'"
21 Ma congiurarono contro di lui e per ordine del re lo lapidarono nel cortile del tempio.	21 But they conspired against him, and at the king's order they stoned him to death in the court of the LORD'S temple.
22 Il re Ioas non si ricordò del favore fattogli da Ioiadà padre di Zaccaria, ma ne uccise il figlio, che morendo disse: "Il Signore lo veda e ne chieda conto!".	22 Thus King Joash was unmindful of the devotion shown him by Jehoiada, Zechariah's father, and slew his son. And as he was dying, he said, "May the LORD see and avenge."
23 All'inizio dell'anno successivo, marciò contro Ioas l'esercito degli Aramei. Essi vennero in Giuda e in Gerusalemme, sterminarono fra il popolo tutti i capi e inviarono l'intero bottino al re di Damasco.	23 At the turn of the year a force of Arameans came up against Joash. They invaded Judah and Jerusalem, did away with all the princes of the people, and sent all their spoil to the king of Damascus.
24 L'esercito degli Aramei era venuto con pochi uomini, ma il Signore mise nelle loro mani un grande esercito, perché essi avevano abbandonato il Signore Dio dei loro padri. Gli Aramei fecero giustizia di Ioas.	24 Though the Aramean force came with few men, the LORD surrendered a very large force into their power, because Judah had abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers. So punishment was meted out to Joash.
25 Quando furono partiti, lasciandolo gravemente malato, i suoi ministri ordirono una congiura contro di lui per vendicare il figlio del sacerdote Ioiadà e lo uccisero nel suo letto. Così egli morì e lo seppellirono nella città di Davide, ma non nei sepolcri dei re.	25 After the Arameans had departed from him, leaving him in grievous suffering, his servants conspired against him because of the murder of the son of Jehoiada the priest. They killed him on his sickbed. He was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
26 Questi furono i congiurati contro di lui: Zabàd figlio di Simeat, l'Ammonita, e Iozabàd figlio di Simrit, il Moabita.	26 These conspired against him: Zabad, son of Shimeath from Ammon, and Jehozabad, son of Shimrith from Moab.
27 Quanto riguarda i suoi figli, la quantità dei tributi da lui riscossi, il restauro del tempio di Dio, ecco tali cose sono descritte nella memoria del libro dei re. Al suo posto divenne re suo figlio Amazia.	27 Of his sons, and the great tribute imposed on him, and of his rebuilding of the house of God, there is a written account in the midrash of the book of the kings. His son Amaziah succeeded him as king.
