| 1 Jahvè si rivolse a Mosè: | 1 The LORD said to Moses, |
| 2 «Di’ a Eleazaro figlio di Aronne il sacerdote che levi bracieri dall’incendio, ne disperda le braci lontano e li riduca in lamine battute per rivestire l’altare. | 2 "Tell Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, to remove the censers from the embers; and scatter the fire some distance away, |
| 3 Infatti i bracieri di costoro che hanno peccato a prezzo della loro vita sono sacri: poiché presentandoli al cospetto di Jahvè, li hanno consacrati. Saranno un segno per i figli di Israele. | 3 for these sinners have consecrated the censers at the cost of their lives. Have them hammered into plates to cover the altar, because in being presented before the LORD they have become sacred. In this way they shall serve as a sign to the Israelites." |
| 4 Il sacerdote Eleazaro prese i bracieri di rame che avevano presentato gli inceneriti e li ridusse in lamine per rivestire l’altare. | 4 So Eleazar the priest had the bronze censers of those burned during the offering hammered into a covering for the altar, |
| 5 Esse sono un ricordo per i figli di Israele: affinché nessun estraneo, chi non è della discendenza di Aronne, si avvicini per bruciare un profumo di erbe aromatiche al cospetto di Jahvè e non capiti a lui come a Korakh e alla sua compagni, secondo ciò che aveva detto Jahvè per mezzo di Mosè. | 5 in keeping with the orders which the LORD had given him through Moses. This cover was to be a reminder to the Israelites that no layman, no one who was not a descendant of Aaron, should approach the altar to offer incense before the LORD, lest he meet the fate of Korah and his band. |
| 6 Il giorno dopo, tutta la comunità dei figli di Israele mormorò contro Mosè e contro Aronne: «Voi avete fatto morire il popolo di Jahvè». | 6 The next day the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron, saying, "It is you who have slain the LORD'S people." |
| 7 Mentre la comunità si radunava presso Mosè e Aronne, questi si voltarono verso la Tenda del convegno ed ecco, la nube la coprì e apparve la gloria di Jahvè. | 7 But while the community was deliberating against them, Moses and Aaron turned toward the meeting tent, and the cloud now covered it and the glory of the LORD appeared. |
| 8 Allora Mosè e Aronne vennero davanti alla Tenda del convegno. | 8 Then Moses and Aaron came to the front of the meeting tent, |
| 9 Jahvè parlò a Mosè: | 9 and the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, |
| 10 «Allontanatevi da questa comunità e in un istante la divorerò». Ma essi caddero con la faccia a terra. | 10 "Depart from this community, that I may consume them at once." But they fell prostrate. |
| 11 Quindi Mosè disse ad Aronne: «Prendi il braciere, mettivi bracie dell’altare, poni su di esse profumo di erbe aromatiche e va’ subito dalla comunità a compiere per essa il rito espiatorio: la collera è uscita da Jahvè, la piaga è incominciata!» | 11 Then Moses said to Aaron, "Take your censer, put fire from the altar in it, lay incense on it, and bring it quickly to the community to make atonement for them; for wrath has come forth from the LORD and the blow is falling." |
| 12 Aronne prese quanto gli aveva detto Mosè, corse in mezzo all’assemblea, ma la piaga aveva già incominciato ad agire contro il popolo. Mise il profumo di erbe aromatiche, compì il rito espiatorio per il popolo | 12 Obeying the orders of Moses, Aaron took his censer and ran in among the community, where the blow was already falling on the people. Then, as he offered the incense and made atonement for the people, |
| 13 e stette tra i morti e i vivi: la piaga cessò. | 13 standing there between the living and the dead, the scourge was checked. |
| 14 Coloro che morirono a causa di questa piaga furono quattordicimilasettecento, senza contare coloro che perirono per l’affare di Korakh. | 14 Yet fourteen thousand seven hundred died from the scourge, in addition to those who died because of Korah. |
| 15 Cessata la piaga, Aronne ritornò da Mosè all’ingresso della Tenda del convegno. | 15 When the scourge had been checked, Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the meeting tent. |
| 16 Jahvè si rivolse a Mosè: | 16 The LORD now said to Moses, |
| 17 «Ordina ai figli di Israele che ti consegnino un bastone per ogni casata, per ogni principe delle loro casate: dodici bastoni. Uno solo sarà il bastone per il capo delle loro casate. Su ogni bastone scriverai il nome del proprietario. | 17 "Speak to the Israelites and get one staff from them for each ancestral house, twelve staffs in all, one from each of their tribal princes. Mark each man's name on his staff; |
| 18 Sul bastone di Levi scriverai il nome di Aronne. | 18 and mark Aaron's name on Levi's staff, for the head of Levi's ancestral house shall also have a staff. |
| 19 Li collocherai nella Tenda del convegno, davanti alla Testimonianza, dove io sono solito convenire con te. | 19 Then lay them down in the meeting tent, in front of the commandments, where I meet you. |
| 20 Fiorirà il bastone dell’uomo che io sceglierò; così farò cessare intorno a me le mormorazioni che i figli di Israele proferiscono contro di voi». | 20 There the staff of the man of my choice shall sprout. Thus will I suppress from my presence the Israelites' grumbling against you." |
| 21 Mosè riferì la cosa ai figli di Israele e tutti i loro principi gli consegnarono un bastone, uno per ogni principe delle loro famiglie: dodici bastoni. In mezzo ai loro bastoni c’era il bastone di Aronne. | 21 So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and their princes gave him staffs, twelve in all, one from each tribal prince; and Aaron's staff was with them. |
| 22 Mosè li collocò al cospetto di Jahvè nella Tenda della Testimonianza. | 22 Then Moses laid the staffs down before the LORD in the tent of the commandments. |
| 23 Il giorno dopo Mosè entrò nella Tenda della Testimonianza; il bastone di Aronne della tribù di Levi era fiorito. Aveva fatto uscire getti, aveva atto sbocciare fiori e già aveva mandorle mature. | 23 The next day, when Moses entered the tent, Aaron's staff, representing the house of Levi, had sprouted and put forth not only shoots, but blossoms as well, and even bore ripe almonds! |
| 24 Mosè portò fuori tutti i bastoni dal cospetto di Jahvè a tutti i figli di Israele: essi constatarono e ognuno prese il proprio bastone. | 24 Moses thereupon brought out all the staffs from the LORD'S presence to the Israelites. After each prince identified his own staff and took it, |
| 25 Jahvè allora disse a Mosè: «Rimetti il bastone di Aronne innanzi alla Testimonianza per conservarlo come un segno per i figli ribelli e perché faccia cessare intorno a me le loro mormorazioni. Così non moriranno». | 25 the LORD said to Moses, "Put back Aaron's staff in front of the commandments, to be kept there as a warning to the rebellious, so that their grumbling may cease before me; if it does not, they will die." |
| 26 Mosè eseguì, fece come Jahvè gli aveva ordinato. | 26 And Moses did as the LORD had commanded him. |
| 27 I figli di Israele dissero a Mosè: «Ecco, noi moriamo! Siamo perduti! Siamo tutti perduti! | 27 Then the Israelites cried out to Moses, "We are perishing; we are lost, we are all lost! |
| 28 Chiunque si avvicina alla Dimora di Jahvè muore. Dovremo perire tutti, fino all’ultimo?» | 28 Every time anyone approaches the Dwelling of the LORD, he dies! Are we to perish to the last man?" |
