| 2 affinchè ne conservi le riflessioni e le tue labbra mantengano la scienza. | 2 so that you may preserve discretion and your lips may guard knowledge. Take no notice of a loose-living woman, |
| 3 Poichè le labbra della straniera stillano miele e il suo palio è più molle dell’olio, | 3 for the lips of the adulteress drip with honey, her palate is more unctuous than oil, |
| 4 ma in fondo è amara come l’assenzio, acuta come la spada a doppio taglio. | 4 but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. |
| 5 I suoi piedi scendono verso la morte, i suoi passi conducono allo Sheol. | 5 Her feet go down to death, Sheol the goal of her steps; |
| 6 La strada della vita non la conosce affatto, erra per le sue vie e non sa dove andare. | 6 far from fol owing the path of life, her course is uncertain and she does not know it. |

| 8 tieni lontana da lei la tua strada e non accostarti alla porta della sua casa | 8 set your course as far from her as possible, go nowhere near the door of her house, |
| 9 per non gettare via il tuo vigore e i tuoi anni a un tiranno, | 9 or she wil hand over your honour to others, the years of your life to a man without pity, |
| 10 perchè gli estranei non godano delle tue sostanze e non vada il frutto delle tue fatiche in casa d’altri, | 10 and strangers wil batten on your property, and your produce go to the house of a stranger, |
| 11 e, in fine, non abbia a gemere quando le tue carni e il tuo corpo saranno distrutti, | 11 and, at your ending, your body and flesh having been consumed, you wil groan |
| 12 esclamando: « Perchè mai ho odiato la disciplina e il mio cuore ha respinto la correzione? | 12 and exclaim, 'Alas, I hated discipline, my heart spurned al correction; |
| 13 Non ho ascoltato la voce dei miei maestri, e non ho prestato orecchio ai miei precettori! | 13 I would not attend to the voice of my masters, I would not listen to those who tried to teach me. |
| 14 Per poco non sono giunto al colmo di ogni male, li in mezzo all’assemblea e alla comunità ». | 14 Now I have come to nearly every kind of misery, in the assembly and in the community.' |
| 15 Bevi l’acqua della tua cisterna, l’acqua zampillante dal tuo pozzo. | 15 Drink the water from your own storage-well, fresh water from your own spring. |
| 16 Vuoi spandere al di fuori le tue: sorgenti e i tuoi ruscelli sulle piazze pubbliche? | 16 Even if your fountains overflow outside, your streams of water in the public squares: |
| 17 Tienile per te solo e non per gli stranieri che sono presso di te. | 17 let them be for you alone, and not for strangers with you. |
| 18 Sia benedetta la tua fonte e poni la tua gioia nella donna della tua gioventù. | 18 May your fountain-head be blessed! Find joy with the wife you married in your youth, |
| 19 Cerva amabile, gazzella piena di grazia, i suoi amori ti inebrino sempre, la sua passione ti affascini in ogni tempo. | 19 fair as a hind, graceful as a fawn: hers the breasts that ever fill you with delight, hers the love that everholds you captive. |
| 20 Perchè, Elio mio, imbambolarti dietro una straniera e stringere il seno di una forestiera? | 20 Why be seduced, my son, by someone else's wife, and fondle the breast of a woman who belongs toanother? |
| 21 Infatti la condotta dell’uomo sta davanti a Jahve che ne sorveglia ogni passo. | 21 For the eyes of Yahweh observe human ways, and survey al human paths. |
| 22 L’empio rimane preso nella rete delle sue iniquità ed è avvinto dal laccio delle sue colpe. | 22 The wicked is snared in his own misdeeds, is caught in the meshes of his own sin. |
| 23 Egli morirà per mancanza di disciplina e si perderà per la sua grande stoltezza. | 23 For want of discipline, he dies, led astray by his own excessive folly. |
