| 1 Fu riferito a Oloferne, generale in capo dell’esercito di Assur, che i figli di Israele si preparavano alla guerra: avevano sbarrato i valichi montani, fortificato tutte le cime dei monti più alti, avevano posto barricate nelle pianure. | 1 It was reported to Holofernes, commander-in-chief of the Assyrian army, that the Israelites were ready for battle, and had blocked the mountain passes, fortified the summits of all the higher peaks, and placed roadblocks in the plains. |
| 2 Allora si sdegnò terribilmente, convocò tutti i capi di Moab, i generali di Ammon, tutti i satrapi del litorale | 2 In great anger he summoned all the rulers of the Moabites, the generals of the Ammonites, and all the satraps of the seacoast |
| 3 e disse loro: « Ditemi, figli di Canaan. Che popolo è quello che risiede nella regione montuosa? Quali sono le città che abita? Quale l’importanza del suo esercito? In che cosa consiste la sua forza e la sua potenza? Chi è il re che li governa e ha il comando del suo esercito? | 3 and said to them: "Now tell me, you Canaanites, what sort of people is this that dwells in the mountains? Which cities do they inhabit? How large is their army? In what does their power and strength consist? Who has set himself up as their king and the leader of their army? |
| 4 Perchè, a differenza di tutti gli abitanti d’occidente, questo popolo ha sdegnosamente rifiutato di venirmi incontro? ». | 4 Why have they refused to come out to meet me along with all the other inhabitants of the West?" |
| 5 Gli rispose Achior, capo di tutti i figli di Ammon: «Ascolti il mio signore un discorso dalla bocca del tuo servitore: io ti riferirò a verità in merito a questo popolo che, stanziato vicino a te, abita questi regione montuosa; non uscirà menzogna dalla bocca del tuo servitore. | 5 Then Achior, the leader of all the Ammonites said to him: "My lord, hear this account from your servant; I will tell you the truth about this people that lives near you (that inhabits this mountain region); no lie shall escape your servant's lips. |
| 6 Dunque, questo popolo discende dai Caldei: | 6 "These people are descendants of the Chaldeans. |
| 7 prima abitarono provvisoriamente nella Mesopotamia, perchè rifiutarono di seguire gli dèi dei loro padri che erano vissuti sulla terra dei Caldei. | 7 They formerly dwelt in Mesopotamia, for they did not wish to follow the gods of their forefathers who were born in the land of the Chaldeans. |
| 8 Deviarono dunque dalla strada dei loro padri e adorarono il Dio del cielo, quel Dio che essi avevano riconosciuto. Perciò i loro padri li allontanarono dalla presenza dei loro dèi; essi si rifugiarono in Mesopotamia e vi si insediarono per molto tempo. | 8 Since they abandoned the way of their ancestors, and acknowledged with divine worship the God of heaven, their forefathers expelled them from the presence of their gods. So they fled to Mesopotamia and dwelt there a long time. |
| 9 Poi il loro Dio comandò foro di abbandonare quella dimora e di recarsi nella terra di Canaan; vi si stanziarono, ebbero abbondanza di oro e di argento e una quantità ingente di bestiame. | 9 Their God bade them leave their abode and proceed to the land of Canaan. Here they settled, and grew very rich in gold, silver, and a great abundance of livestock. |
| 10 Discesero poi in Egitto, perchè la carestia aveva invaso la terra di Canaan; vi si fermarono finchè ebbero di che nutrirsi. Là divennero una grande moltitudine: la loro razza non aveva numero. | 10 Later, when famine had gripped the whole land of Canaan, they went down into Egypt. They stayed there as long as they found sustenance, and grew into such a great multitude that the number of their race could not be counted. |
| 11 Il re d’Egitto allora si levò contro di essi: li giocò con il lavoro della fabbricazione dei mattoni; gli Egiziani li angariarono e li resero schiavi. | 11 The king of Egypt, however, rose up against them, shrewdly forced them to labor at brickmaking, oppressed and enslaved them. |
| 12 Allora gridarono al loro Dio, che percosse tutta la terra d’Egitto con piaghe senza rimedio; quindi gli Egiziani li bandirono dalla loro presenza. | 12 But they cried to their God, and he struck the land of Egypt with plagues for which there was no remedy. When the Egyptians expelled them, |
| 13 Dio, innanzi a loro, prosciugò il Mare Rosso e li condusse per la via del Sinai e di Kadesh-Barne; | 13 God dried up the Red Sea before them, |
| 14 essi respinsero tutti gli abitanti del deserto, | 14 and led them along the route to Sinai and Kadesh-barnea. First they drove out all the inhabitants of the desert; |
| 15 si stanziarono nel territorio degli Amorrei e con la loro potenza distrussero tutti gli abitanti di Kheshbon. Dopo aver passato il Giordano, ebbero in eredità tutta la regione montuosa, | 15 then they settled in the land of the Amorites, destroyed all the Heshbonites by main force, crossed the Jordan, and took possession of the whole mountain region. |
| 16 espulsero dalla loro presenza il Cananeo, il Ferezeo, il Gebuseo, il Sichemita e tutti i Gergesei, e abitarono là per molto tempo. | 16 They expelled the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Shechemites, and all the Gergesites; and they lived in these mountains a long time. |
| 17 Finchè non peccarono al cospetto del loro Dio, ebbero prosperità, perchè hanno con loro un Dio che detesta l’iniquità; | 17 "As long as the Israelites did not sin in the sight of their God, they prospered, for their God, who hates wickedness, was with them. |
| 18 ma, quando si allontanarono dalla via che aveva imposto loro, nelle loro guerre soffrirono distruzioni tremende, furono deportati in terra non propria, il tempio del loro Dio fu distrutto fino dalle fondamenta e le loro città furono conquistate dai loro avversari. | 18 But when they deviated from the way he prescribed for them, they were ground down steadily, more and more, by frequent wars, and finally taken as captives into foreign lands. The temple of their God was razed to the ground, and their cities were occupied by their enemies. |
| 19 Ma adesso, essendo ritornati al loro Dio, sono saliti dalle diverse località, dove erano stati dispersi, hanno rioccupato Gerusalemme, dove è il loro santuario, si sono stabiliti nella regione montuosa, che era spopolata. | 19 But now that they have returned to their God, they have come back from the Dispersion wherein they were scattered, and have repossessed Jerusalem, where their sanctuary is, and have settled again in the mountain region which was unoccupied. |
| 20 Perciò, signore e padrone, se in questo popolo c’è qualche errore, se pecca contro il proprio Dio, se constatiamo che per essi c’è questo impedimento, saliremo e li debelleremo; | 20 "So now, my lord and master, if these people are at fault, and are sinning against their God, and if we verify this offense of theirs, then we shall be able to go up and conquer them. |
| 21 ma se questa gente non è rea di nessuna trasgressione, il mio signore abbandoni l’impresa così che il loro Signore e Dio non si faccia scudo per essi e noi non diventiamo oggetto di scherno innanzi a tutta la terra ». | 21 But if they are not a guilty nation, then your lordship should keep his distance; otherwise their Lord and God will shield them, and we shall become the laughing stock of the whole world." |
| 22 Quando Achior finì di parlare, ci fu un mormorio indistinto tra coloro che circondavano la tenda e stazionavano lì intorno: i grandi di Oloferne, tutti gli abitanti del litorale e quel di Moab suggerivano di farlo a pezzi: | 22 Now when Achior had concluded his recommendation, all the people standing round about the tent murmured; and the officers of Holofernes and all the inhabitants of the seacoast and of Moab alike said he should be cut to pieces. |
| 23 « Non avremo paura dei figli di Israele. Sono infatti un popolo che non ha nè capacità nè forza contro uno schieramento poderoso. | 23 "We are not afraid of the Israelites," they said, "for they are a powerless people, incapable of a strong defense. |
| 24 Saliamo dunque! Quelli saranno un gradito boccone per tutto il esercito, o padrone Oloferne ». | 24 Let us therefore attack them; your great army, Lord Holofernes, will swallow them up." |
