NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
It happened that at Iconium they went to the Jewish synagogue, in the same way, and they spoke soeffectively that a great many Jews and Greeks became believers.
Quivero increduli fuerunt Iudaei, suscitaverunt et exacerbaverunt animas gentiumadversus fratres.2 (However, the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the gentiles against the brothers and set them inopposition.)
Multo igitur tempore demorati sunt, fiducialiter agentes inDomino, testimonium perhibente verbo gratiae suae, dante signa et prodigia fieriper manus eorum.3 Accordingly Paul and Barnabas stayed on for some time, preaching fearlessly in the Lord; and heattested al they said about his gift of grace, al owing signs and wonders to be performed by them.
Divisa est autem multitudo civitatis: et quidam quidem erantcum Iudaeis, quidam vero cum apostolis.4 The people in the city were divided; some supported the Jews, others the apostles,
Cum autem factus esset impetusgentilium et Iudaeorum cum principibus suis, ut contumeliis afficerent etlapidarent eos,5 but eventual y with the connivance of the authorities a move was made by gentiles as well as Jews tomake attacks on them and to stone them.
intellegentes confugerunt ad civitates Lycaoniae, Lystram etDerben et ad regionem in circuitu6 When they came to hear of this, they went off for safety to Lycaonia where, in the towns of Lystra andDerbe and in the surrounding country,
et ibi evangelizantes erant.
they preached the good news.
Et quidam vir in Lystris infirmus pedibus sedebat, claudus ex utero matrissuae, qui numquam ambulaverat.8 There was a man sitting there who had never walked in his life, because his feet were crippled frombirth;
Hic audivit Paulum loquentem; qui intuitus eumet videns quia haberet fidem, ut salvus fieret,9 he was listening to Paul preaching, and Paul looked at him intently and saw that he had the faith to becured.
dixit magna voce: “ Surgesuper pedes tuos rectus! ”. Et exsilivit et ambulabat.10 Paul said in a loud voice, 'Get to your feet-stand up,' and the cripple jumped up and began to walk.
”;11 When the crowds saw what Paul had done they shouted in the language of Lycaonia, 'The gods havecome down to us in human form.'
et vocabant BarnabamIovem, Paulum vero Mercurium, quoniam ipse erat dux verbi.
They addressed Barnabas as Zeus, and since Paul was the principal speaker they cal ed himHermes.
The priests of Zeus-outside-the-Gate, proposing that al the people should offer sacrifice with them,brought garlanded oxen to the gates.
Quod ubi audierunt apostoliBarnabas et Paulus, conscissis tunicis suis, exsilierunt in turbam clamantes14 When the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard what was happening they tore their clothes, and rushedinto the crowd, shouting,
et dicentes: “ Viri, quid haec facitis? Et nos mortales sumus similes vobishomines, evangelizantes vobis ab his vanis converti ad Deum vivum, qui fecitcaelum et terram et mare et omnia, quae in eis sunt.15 'Friends, what do you think you are doing? We are only human beings, mortal like yourselves. Wehave come with good news to make you turn from these empty idols to the living God who made sky and earthand the sea and all that these hold.
Qui in praeteritisgenerationibus permisit omnes gentes ambulare in viis suis;16 In the past he al owed al the nations to go their own way;
et quidem nonsine testimonio semetipsum reliquit benefaciens, de caelo dans vobis pluvias ettempora fructifera, implens cibo et laetitia corda vestra ”.17 but even then he did not leave you without evidence of himself in the good things he does for you: hesends you rain from heaven and seasons of fruitfulness; he fil s you with food and your hearts with merriment.'
Et haecdicentes vix sedaverunt turbas, ne sibi immolarent.18 With this speech they just managed to prevent the crowd from offering them sacrifice.
Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium and turned the people against them. They stonedPaul and dragged him outside the town, thinking he was dead.
The disciples came crowding round him but, as they did so, he stood up and went back to the town.The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.
Cumque evangelizassent civitati illi et docuissent multos, reversi suntLystram et Iconium et Antiochiam21 Having preached the good news in that town and made a considerable number of disciples, they wentback through Lystra, Iconium and Antioch.
confirmantes animas discipulorum,exhortantes, ut permanerent in fide, et quoniam per multas tribulationes oportetnos intrare in regnum Dei.22 They put fresh heart into the disciples, encouraging them to persevere in the faith, saying, 'We mustal experience many hardships before we enter the kingdom of God.'
Et cum ordinassent illis per singulas ecclesiaspresbyteros et orassent cum ieiunationibus, commendaverunt eos Domino, in quemcrediderant.23 In each of these churches they appointed elders, and with prayer and fasting they commended themto the Lord in whom they had come to believe.
Transeuntesque Pisidiam venerunt Pamphyliam;24 They passed through Pisidia and reached Pamphylia.
et loquentes inPerge verbum descenderunt in Attaliam.25 Then after proclaiming the word at Perga they went down to Attalia
and from there sailed for Antioch, where they had original y been commended to the grace of God forthe work they had now completed.
On their arrival they assembled the church and gave an account of all that God had done with them,and how he had opened the door of faith to the gentiles.
Morati sunt autemtempus non modicum cum discipulis.
They stayed there with the disciples for some time.
