2 quae peperit ei Zamran et Iecsan et Madan et Madian et Iesboc et Sue. | 2 and she bore him Zimram, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak and Shuah. |
3 Iecsan quoque genuit Saba et Dedan. Filii Dedan fuerunt Assurim et Latusim et Loommim. | 3 Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan, and the descendants of Dedan were the Asshurites, theLetushim and the Leummim. |
4 At vero ex Madian ortus est Epha et Opher et Henoch et Abida et Eldaa. Omnes hi filii Ceturae. | 4 The descendants of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida and Eldaah. Al these were sons ofKeturah. |
5 Deditque Abraham cuncta, quae possederat, Isaac; | 5 Abraham left al his possessions to Isaac. |
6 filiis autem concubinarum suarum largitus est munera et separavit eos ab Isaac filio suo, dum adhuc ipse viveret, ad plagam orientalem. | 6 To the sons of his concubines Abraham made grants during his lifetime, sending them away from hisson Isaac eastward, to the Land of the East. |
7 Fuerunt autem dies vitae Abrahae centum septuaginta quinque anni. | 7 The number of years Abraham lived was a hundred and seventy-five. |
8 Et deficiens mortuus est Abraham in senectute bona provectaeque aetatis et plenus dierum congregatusque est ad populum suum. | 8 When Abraham had breathed his last, dying at a happy ripe age, old and ful of years, he wasgathered to his people. |
9 Et sepelierunt eum Isaac et Ismael filii sui in spelunca Machpela, quae sita est in agro Ephron filii Seor Hetthaei e regione Mambre, | 9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah facing Mamre, in the field of Ephronthe Hittite son of Zohar. |
10 quem emerat a filiis Heth. Ibi sepultus est ipse et Sara uxor eius. | 10 This was the field that Abraham had bought from the Hittites, and Abraham and his wife Sarah wereburied there. |
11 Et post obitum illius benedixit Deus Isaac filio eius, qui habitabat iuxta puteum Lahairoi. | 11 After Abraham's death, God blessed his son Isaac. Isaac settled near the wel of Lahai Roi. |
12 Hae sunt generationes Ismael filii Abrahae, quem peperit ei Agar Aegyptia famula Sarae. | 12 These are the descendants of Ishmael son of Abraham by Hagar, Sarah's Egyptian slave-girl. |
13 Et haec nomina filiorum Ismael in vocabulis et generationibus suis: primogenitus Ismaelis Nabaioth, dein Cedar et Adbeel et Mabsam, | 13 These are the names of the sons of Ishmael by name and line: Ishmael's first-born was Nebaioth;then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, |
14 Masma quoque et Duma et Massa, | 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, |
15 Hadad et Thema, Iethur et Naphis et Cedma. | 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah. |
16 Isti sunt filii Ismaelis, et haec nomina eorum per vicos et mansiones eorum: duodecim principes tribuum suarum. | 16 These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, according to their settlements andencampments, twelve chiefs of as many tribes. |
17 Et facti sunt anni vitae Ismaelis centum triginta septem; deficiens mortuus est et appositus ad populum suum. | 17 The number of years Ishmael lived was one hundred and thirty-seven. When he breathed his lastand died, he was gathered to his people. |
18 Habitaverunt autem ab Hevila usque Sur, quae respicit Aegyptum introeuntibus Assyriam. In faciem cunctorum fratrum suorum obiit. | 18 He lived in the territory stretching from Havilah-by-Shur just outside Egypt on the way to Assyria, andhe held his own against all his kinsmen. |
19 Hae sunt generationes Isaac filii Abraham: Abraham genuit Isaac; | 19 This is the story of Isaac son of Abraham. Abraham fathered Isaac. |
20 qui, cum quadraginta esset annorum, duxit uxorem Rebeccam filiam Bathuelis Aramaei de Paddanaram, sororem Laban Aramaei. | 20 Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah the daughter of Bethuel the Aramaean ofPaddan-Aram, and sister of Laban the Aramaean. |
21 Deprecatusque est Isaac Dominum pro uxore sua, eo quod esset sterilis. Qui exaudivit eum et dedit conceptum Rebeccae. | 21 Isaac prayed to Yahweh on behalf of his wife, for she was barren. Yahweh heard his prayer, and hiswife Rebekah conceived. |
22 Sed collidebantur in utero eius parvuli. Quae ait: “Si sic est, cur mihi?”. Perrexitque, ut consuleret Dominum. | 22 But the children inside her struggled so much that she said, 'If this is the way of it, why go on living?'So she went to consult Yahweh, |
23 Qui respondens ait: “Duae gentes sunt in utero tuo, et duo populi ex ventre tuo dividentur; populusque populum superabit, et maior serviet minori”. | 23 and Yahweh said to her: There are two nations in your womb, your issue wil be two rival peoples.One nation wil have the mastery of the other, and the elder wil serve the younger. |
24 Iam tempus pariendi venerat, et ecce gemini in utero eius. | 24 When the time came for her confinement, there were indeed twins in her womb. |
25 Qui primus egressus est rufus erat et totus quasi pallium pilosum; vocatumque est nomen eius Esau. Postea frater eius egrediens plantam Esau tenebat manu, et idcirco appellatum est nomen eius Iacob. | 25 The first to be born was red, altogether like a hairy cloak; so they named him Esau. |
26 Sexagenarius erat Isaac, quando nati sunt parvuli. | 26 Then his brother was born, with his hand grasping Esau's heel; so they named him Jacob. Isaac wassixty years old at the time of their birth. |
27 Quibus adultis, factus est Esau vir gnarus venandi et homo agrestis; Iacob autem vir compositus et habitans in tabernaculis. | 27 When the boys grew up Esau became a skil ed hunter, a man of the open country. Jacob on theother hand was a quiet man, staying at home among the tents. |
28 Isaac amabat Esau, eo quod de venationibus illius libenter vesceretur; et Rebecca diligebat Iacob. | 28 Isaac preferred Esau, for he had a taste for wild game; but Rebekah preferred Jacob. |
29 Coxit autem Iacob pulmentum; ad quem, cum venisset Esau de agro lassus, | 29 Once, when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau returned from the countryside exhausted. |
30 ait: “Da mihi de coctione hac rufa, quia oppido lassus sum”. Quam ob causam vocatum est nomen eius Edom (id est Rufus). | 30 Esau said to Jacob, 'Give me a mouthful of that red stuff there; I am exhausted' -- hence the namegiven to him, Edom. |
31 Cui dixit Iacob: “Vende mihi prius primogenita tua”. | 31 Jacob said, 'First, give me your birthright in exchange.' |
32 Ille respondit: “En morior; quid mihi proderunt primogenita?”. | 32 Esau said, 'Here I am, at death's door; what use is a birthright to me?' |
33 Ait Iacob: “Iura ergo mihi”. Iuravit et vendidit primogenita. | 33 Then Jacob said, 'First give me your oath'; he gave him his oath and sold his birthright to Jacob. |
34 Et sic, accepto pane et lentis edulio, comedit et bibit; surrexit et abiit parvipendens quod primogenita vendidisset. | 34 Then Jacob gave him some bread and lentil stew; he ate, drank, got up and went away. That was allEsau cared about his birthright. |
