Giosuè 2

BIBBIA MARTINI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Ma Giosuè figliuolo di Nun mandò segretamente da Setim due esploratori, e disse loro: Andate, considerate il paese, e la città di Gerico. E questi andarono, ed entrarono in casa di una donna di mala vita, per nome Rahab, e si riposarono presso di lei.	1 From Shittim, Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men to reconnoitre. He said, 'Go and explore thecountry and Jericho.' They left; they went into the house of a prostitute called Rahab, to spend the night there.
2 E fu recata la nuova al re di Gerico, e gli fu detto: Son capitati qua di notte tempo certi uomini d'Israele per osservare il paese.	2 The king of Jericho was told, 'Some men have come here tonight from the Israelites, to reconnoitre thecountry.'
3 E il re di Gerico mandò a dire a Rahab: Conduci fuori quegli uomini che sono venuti da te, e sono dentro la tua casa: perocché sono spioni venuti a osservare tutto il paese.	3 The king of Jericho then sent a message to Rahab, 'Send out the men who came to you and are lodgingin your house, for they have come to reconnoitre the whole country.'
4 Ma la donna prese costoro, e li nascose, e disse: Confesso che venner da me; ma io non sapeva, donde fossero:	4 But the woman took the two men and hid them. 'It is true,' she said, 'the men did come to me, but I didnot know where they came from.
5 E allorché si chiudeva la porta essendo notte eglino in quel punto usciron fuori, e non so dove se n'andassero: tenete lor dietro senza perder tempo, e li raggiungerete.	5 When the city gate was about to be closed at nightfal , the men went out and I cannot say where theyhave gone. Follow them quickly and you wil overtake them.'
6 Or ella fece salir coloro sul solaio della sua casa, e li coperse sotto le stoppie del lino che eran ivi.	6 She had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under some stalks of flax which she had laid outthere.
7 E què che furono spediti in cerca presero la strada che mena al guado del Giordano: e quando furono usciti, subito fu richiusa la porta.	7 The men hurried in pursuit of them towards the Jordan, as far as the fords, and the gate was shut oncethe pursuers had gone through.
8 E quelli che erano nascosti, non aveano ancora preso sonno, quando la donna salì a trovargli, e disse loro:	8 The two men had not yet settled down for the night when Rahab came up to them on the roof.
9 Io so che il Signore ha dato a voi il dominio di questa terra: perocché voi siete divenuti terribili a noi, e tutti gli abitanti del paese sono sbigottiti.	9 She said to them, 'I know that Yahweh has given you this country, that we are afraid of you and thateveryone living in this country has been seized with terror at your approach;
10 Abbiamo udito, come il Signore ha asciugate le acque del mare Rosso nel vostro passaggio, allorché usciste dall'Egitto: e in qual maniera abbiate trattati i due re degli Amorrhei che eran di là dal Giordano, Sehon, e Og, i quali voi metteste a morte.	10 for we have heard how Yahweh dried up the Sea of Reeds before you when you came out of Egyptand what you did to the two Amorite kings across the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you put under the curse ofdestruction.
11 E udite tali cose ci siamo impauriti, e il nostro cuore si è infiacchito, e non è rimaso a noi spirito alla vostra venuta: perocché il Signore Dio vostro egli è Dio lassù in cielo, e quaggiù in terra.	11 When we heard this, our hearts failed us, and now no one has any courage left to resist you, sinceYahweh your God is God both in heaven above and on earth beneath.
12 Ora adunque giurate a me pel Signore, che siccome io ho usata misericordia con voi, così voi la userete verso la casa del padre mio; e mi darete un segno di sicurezza;	12 So, swear to me now by Yahweh, since I have been kind to you,
13 Onde salviate il padre mio, e la madre, e i fratelli miei, e le sorelle, e tutto quello che a questi appartiene, e ci liberiate dalla morte.	13 that you in your turn will be kind to my father's family; and give me a sure sign of this: that you wilspare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters and al who belong to them, and will preserveus from death.'
14 E quelli le risposero: A spese della nostra vita salveremo le vostre, se tu non ci tradisci: e quando il Signore ci avrà fatti padroni del paese, useremo fedelmente misericordia verso di te.	14 The men replied, 'We pledge you our lives, provided that you say nothing about our mission. WhenYahweh has given us the country, we shal treat you kindly and faithful y.'
15 Ella adunque li calò con una fune dalla finestra: perocché la casa di lei era attaccata alla muraglia:	15 She then let them down from the window on a rope, as her house was against the city wal and sheactual y lived in the wal .
16 E disse loro: Andate in su verso il monte, affinchè quelli nel ritorno non s'imbattano in voi: e ivi state nascosti per tre giorni, fino che sieno qua ritornati; e allora ripiglierete la vostra strada.	16 'Make for the hil s,' she said, 'or you may run into your pursuers. Hide there for three days, until yourpursuers have come back, and then go on your way.'
17 E quelli dissero: Noi osserveremo puntualmente il giuramento, che tu hai richiesto da noi;	17 The men said, 'This is how we shall fulfil the oath which you have made us swear:
18 Purché quando noi entreremo nel paese, tu prenda per segnale questa cordicella di color di scarlatto, e la leghi alla finestra, per la quale ci hai calati, e raduni in casa tua il padre tuo, e la madre, e i fratelli, e tutta la tua parentela.	18 when we invade the country, you must tie this scarlet cord to the window from which you let us down,and collect your father, mother, brothers and entire family inside your house.
19 Se alcun di questi esce dalla porta della tua casa, il sangue di lui sarà sopra la sua testa, e noi non vi avrem colpa: ma di tutti quelli che saranno in casa tua il sangue cadrà sopra le nostre teste, se alcuno li toccherà.	19 If anyone goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood wil be on his own head and weshall not be to blame; but the blood of al staying inside the house with you wil be on our heads if a hand is laidon any of them.
20 Che se tu pensassi a tradirci, e divolgassi quello che noi diciamo, noi saremo sciolti dal giuramento che hai esatto da noi.	20 But if you divulge our mission in the meanwhile, we shal be free of the oath which you have made usswear.'
21 Ed ella rispose: Secondo quello che avete detto, cosi sia fatto: e licenziandoli, affinchè se n'andassero, appiccò la cordicella di color di scarlatto alla finestra.	21 She replied, 'Let it be as you say.' She let them go, and they left. She then tied the scarlet cord to thewindow.
22 E quelli partiti giunsero al monte, e vi stettero fermi tre giorni, fino a tanto che fossero tornati (a casa loro) quelli che ne andavano in traccia: perocché questi dopo aver cercato per tutta la strada non li trovarono.	22 They left and made for the hil s. They stayed there for three days, until their pursuers had gone home,having scoured the countryside without finding them.
23 Ed essendo questi già entrati nella città, gli esploratori scesi dal monte se ne ritornarono, e passato il Giordano giunsero dov'era Giosuè figliuolo di Nun; e gli raccontarono tutto quello che era loro avvenuto:	23 The two men then came down again from the hil s, crossed over and, going to Joshua son of Nun, toldhim everything that had happened to them.
24 E dissero: Il Signore ha dato in nostro potere tutto quel paese, e tutti i suoi abitanti sono abbattuti dallo spavento.	24 To Joshua they said, 'Yahweh has put the whole country at our mercy, and its inhabitants are al panic-stricken at our approach.'
