1 Io dissi in cuor mio: Anderò a provarla copia delle delizie, e a godere dei beni. E riconobbi, che questo pure è vanità.	1 I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.
2 Il riso lo condannai di pazzia: e al gaudio dissi: Come vanamente ti inganni!	2 I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?
3 Risolvei in cuor mio di divezzar la mia carne dal vino per rivolgere l'animo alla sapienza, e per fuggir la stoltezza; sino a tanto che io avessi veduto quel, che sia utile pe' figliuoli degli uomini, e quel, che sia necessario di fare sotto del sole nei giorni contati della sua vita.	3 I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.
4 Or io feci opere grandi, fabbricai delle case, e piantai delle vigne.	4 I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards:
5 Piantai orti, e giardini, e vi messi ogni specie di piante.	5 I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits:
6 E formai delle peschiere di acque per annaffiare la selva de' giovani arboscelli.	6 I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees:
7 Ebbi in mio dominio dei servi, e delle serve con molta famiglia, ed armenti, e greggi di pecore numerosi, sorpassando tutti quelli, che furono avanti a me in Gerusalemme:	7 I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:
8 Ammassai argento, ed oro, e quel,che aveano di più prezioso i regi, e le provincie: e mi scelsi de' cantori, e delle cantatrici, e le delizie de' figliuoli degli uomini, delle coppe, e de' vasi per mescere i vini.	8 I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.
9 E superai nelle ricchezze tutti quei che furono prima di me in Gerusalemme; e la sapienza ancora fu sempre meco.	9 So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.
10 E non negai agli occhi miei nulla di tutto quel, ch'ei desiderarono, e non vietai al mio cuore, il godere di ogni piacere, e il deliziarsi in tutte queste cose preparate da me, e questa credetti la mia porzione, il godere di mie fatiche:	10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.
11 Ma volgendomi poi a tutte le opere fatte dalle mie mani, e alle fatiche, nelle quali io avea sudato inutilmente, in ogni cosa io vidi vanità, e afflizione di cuore, e che niente dura sotto il sole.	11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.
12 Passai a contemplar la saggezza, e gli errori, e la stoltezza. Che è egli l'uomo (dissi io) che seguir possa il re suo Creatore?	12 And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.
13 E riconobbi, come tanto va avanti la sapienza alla stoltezza, quanto la luce è distante dalle tenebre.	13 Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.
14 Il saggio ha occhi in testa: lo stolto cammina al buio: ma io appresi,che e l'uno, e l'altro vanno egualmente alla morte.	14 The wise man's eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.
15 Onde io dissi in cuor mio: Se e lo stolto, ed io egualmente morremo, che giova a me l'aver fatto maggior studio della sapienza? E dopo averla discorsa coll'animo mio, conobbi, che questo stesso è vanità:	15 Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.
16 Perocché non sarà eterna la memoria del saggio, come neppure dello stolto; e i tempi avvenire seppelliran nell'oblio tutte a un modo le cose: muore il dotto appunto, come l'indotto.	16 For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.
17 E perciò mi venne a noja la vita o in veggendo come i mali tutti si trovano sotto del sole, e che tutto è vanità, ed è afflizione di spirito.	17 Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
18 Detestai di poi tutta la mia sollecitudine, onde con tanto studio mi affannai sotto del sole, mentr'io son per avere un erede dopo di me,	18 Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.
19 Il quale io non so se sia per essere sapiente, o stolto, e il quale possederà le mie fatiche, che a me costarono sudori, ed affanni. Or v'ha egli cosa vana più di questa?	19 And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.
20 Per la qual cosa io mi presi riposo, e il cuor mio rìnunziò a travagliarsi mai più sotto del sole.	20 Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I took under the sun.
21 Conciossiachè dopo che uno ha faticato con saggezza, e prudenza, e sollecitudine, gli acquisti suoi lascia ad un infingardo: e questo è certamente vanità, e male grande.	21 For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.
22 Imperocché qual vantaggio trarrà l'uomo di tutte le sue fatiche, e delle afflizioni di spirito, ond'egli si è straziato sotto del sole?	22 For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun?
23 Di dolori, e di amarezze sono pieni tutti i suoi giorni, e neppure la notte ha posa il suo spirito: e questo non è egli vanità?	23 For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity.
24 Non è egli meglio mangiare, e bere, e far del bene all'anima propria colle proprie fatiche? E questo è pur dalla mano di Dio.	24 There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.
25 Chi consumerà, e accumulerà delizie, come ho fatto io?	25 For who can eat, or who else can hasten hereunto, more than I?
26 All'uomo, che è retto dinanzi a lui, ha data Dio la sapienza, e la scienza, e la letizia; ma al peccatore ha date le afflizioni, e la inutile cura di accumulare, e ammassare de' beni per lasciarli a chi Dio vorrà: e questo pure è vanità, e inutile angoscia di animo.	26 For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
