1 Parole dell'Ecclesiaste figliuolo di David, re di Gerusalemme.	1 The words of Ecclesiastes, the son of David, the king of Jerusalem.
2 Vanità delle vanità, disse l'Ecclesiaste: vanità delle vanità, e tutte le cose sono vanità.	2 Ecclesiastes said: Vanity of vanities! Vanity of vanities, and all is vanity!
3 Che resta all'uomo di tutte quante le fatiche, ond'ei si carica sotto del sole?	3 What more does a man have from all his labor, as he labors under the sun?
4 Una generazione passa, un'altra le viene appresso, e la terra sta sempre.	4 A generation passes away, and a generation arrives. But the earth stands forever.
5 Il sole nasce, e tramonta, e ritorna al suo primo posto, ed ivi tornando a nascere,	5 The sun rises and sets; it returns to its place, and from there, being born again,
6 S'avanza verso il mezzodì, e poi piega verso settentrione. Va attorno lo spirito, visitando ogni parte, e torna a ripigliare i suoi giri.	6 it circles through the south, and arcs toward the north. The spirit continues on, illuminating everything in its circuit, and turning again in its cycle.
7 Tutti i fiumi entrano nel mare, e il mare non trabocca: colà donde nacquero tornano i numi per ripigliar nuovo corso.	7 All rivers enter into the sea, and the sea does not overflow. To the place from which the rivers go out, they return, so that they may flow again.
8 Tutte le cose sono difficili; l'uomo non ha parole per ispiegarle. L'occhio non è sazio giammai di vedere, nell'orecchio si empie di udire.	8 Such things are difficult; man is not able to explain them with words. The eye is not satisfied by seeing, nor is the ear fulfilled by hearing.
9 Che è quello, che fu? quello, che sarà. Che è quello, che avvenne? quello, che accade.	9 What is it that has existed? The same shall exist in the future. What is it that has been done? The same shall continue to be done.
10 Nulla cosa o nuova sotto del sole, e nessuno può dire: Guarda che novità; perocché ciò fa già ne' secoli, che ci precedettero.	10 There is nothing new under the sun. Neither is anyone able to say: “Behold, this is new!” For it has already been brought forth in the ages that were before us.
11 Non si tien memoria delle cose passate; ma neppur delle cose che sono per l'avvenire si farà ricordanza da quei, che saranno in appresso.	11 There is no remembrance of the former things. Indeed, neither shall there be any record of past things in the future, for those who will exist at the very end.
12 Io l'Ecclesiaste fui re di'Israel in Gerusalemme.	12 I, Ecclesiastes, was king of Israel at Jerusalem.
13 E mi messi in cuore di fare per mezzo della sapienza studio, e ricerca sopra tutte le cose, che si fanno sotto del sole. Questa penosissima occupazione la ha data Iddio a figliuoli degli uomini, perché vi si impieghino.	13 And I was determined in my mind to seek and to investigate wisely, concerning all that is done under the sun. God has given this very difficult task to the sons of men, so that they may be occupied by it.
14 Io osservai tutto quello, che si fa sotto del sole: e vidi, che tutto è vanità, e afflizione di spirito.	14 I have seen all that is done under the sun, and behold: all is emptiness and an affliction of the spirit.
15 I malvagi difficilmente si emendano; e degli stolti il numero è infinito.	15 The perverse are unwilling to be corrected, and the number of the foolish is boundless.
16 Io dissi in cuor mio: Ecco ch'io son diventato grande, ed ho sorpassato in sapienza tutti quelli che furono avanti a me in Gerusalemme, e la mente mia molte cose ha contemplate sapientemente, e ne ho apparate.	16 I have spoken in my heart, saying: “Behold, I have achieved greatness, and I have surpassed all the wise who were before me in Jerusalem.” And my mind has contemplated many things wisely, and I have learned.
17 Ed ho applicato il mio cuore ad apprendere la prudenza, e la dottrina,e gli errori, e le follie; ed ho riconosciuto, che questo stesso è affanno, e tormento dello spirito:	17 And I have dedicated my heart, so that I may know prudence and doctrine, and also error and foolishness. Yet I recognize that, in these things also, there is hardship, and affliction of the spirit.
18 Perocché la molta sapienza ha molto onde disgustarsi, e chi moltiplica il sapere, l'affanno moltiplica.	18 Because of this, with much wisdom there is also much anger. And whoever adds knowledge, also adds hardship.
