1 L'anno cento cinquant'uno, Demetrio figliuolo di Seleuco partì da Roma, e giunse con poca comitiva ad una città marittima, e ivi cominciò a regnare.	1 In the year one hundred and fifty-one, Demetrius, son of Seleucus, set out from Rome, arrived with a few men in a city on the seacoast, and began to rule there.
2 E appena fu egli entrato nel regno dei padri suoi, l'esercito messe le mani addosso ad Antioco e a Lisia, e li menarono a lui.	2 As he was preparing to enter the royal palace of his ancestors, the soldiers seized Antiochus and Lysias to bring them to him.
3 Lo che avendo egli inteso, disse: Fate che io non li vegga in faccia.	3 When he was informed of this, he said, "Do not show me their faces."
4 E i soldati gli uccisero, e Demetrio si assise sul trono del suo regno.	4 So the soldiers killed them, and Demetrius sat on the royal throne.
5 E alcuni uomini malvagi ed empi d'Israele andarono a lui, capo de' quali era Alcimo, che voleva essere sommo Sacerdote.	5 Then all the lawless and impious men of Israel came to him. They were led by Alcimus, who desired to be high priest.
6 E accusarono la loro nazione presso al re dicendo: Giuda e i suoi fratelli hanno strapazzati tutti i tuoi amici, e noi hanno discacciati dal nostro paese.	6 They made this accusation to the king against the people: "Judas and his brothers have destroyed all your friends and have driven us out of our country.
7 Ora tu manda una persona fidata, che vada a riconoscere tutti gli strapazzi, che quegli ha fatto a noi e alle provincie del re, e punisca tutti gli amici di lui e i loro fautori.	7 So now, send a man whom you trust to go and see all the havoc Judas has done to us and to the king's land, and let him punish them and all their supporters."
8 E il re scelse tra' suoi amici Bacchide, il quale governava la parte del regno di la dal fiume grande, e di cui il re si fidava, e lui spedì,	8 Then the king chose Bacchides, one of the King's Friends, governor of West-of-Euphrates, a great man in the kingdom, and faithful to the king.
9 A riconoscere le vessazioni fatte da Giuda: e oltre a ciò all'empio Alcimo diede il sommo pontificato, e comandogli che gastigasse i figliuoli d'Israele.	9 He sent him and the impious Alcimus, to whom he granted the high priesthood, with orders to take revenge on the Israelites.
10 Ed ei si mossero, ed entraron con grande esercito nella terra di Giuda, e mandarono ambasciadori a Giuda e ai suoi fratelli con buone parole per ingannarli.	10 They set out and, on arriving in the land of Judah with a great army, sent messengers who spoke deceitfully to Judas and his brothers in peaceful terms.
11 Ma questi non dieder orecchio ai loro discorsi, perché vedevano, che eran venuti con grand'esercito.	11 But these paid no attention to their words, seeing that they had come with a great army.
12 E una schiera di Scribi si presentarono ad Alcimo e a Bacchide per domandar loro quel che era di giustizia:	12 A group of scribes, however, gathered about Alcimus and Bacchides to ask for a just agreement.
13 E alla testa di questi figliuoli d'Israele erano gli Assidei, e chiedevano la pace.	13 The Hasideans were the first among the Israelites to seek peace with them,
14 Perocchè dicevano: Viene uno, che è sacerdote della stirpe d'Aronne, egli non ci gabberà.	14 for they said, "A priest of the line of Aaron has come with the army, and he will not do us any wrong."
15 Ed egli fece loro buone parole, e giurò, e disse: Non farem male a voi, ne ai vostri amici.	15 He spoke with them peacefully and swore to them, "We will not try to injure you or your friends."
16 E quegli si fidarono. Ma egli fece prendere sessanta uomini de' loro, e gli uccise in un medesimo giorno secondo quella parola, che sta scritta:	16 So they trusted him. But he arrested sixty of them and killed them in one day, according to the text of Scripture:
17 Le carni de'santi tuoi, e il loro sangue gettarono intorno a Gerusalemme, nè vi fù chi desse loro sepoltura.	17 "The flesh of your saints they have strewn, and their blood they have shed round about Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them."
18 E il popolo fa sorpreso da timore e tremore, perocchè dicevano: Non è verità, nè giustizia in costoro, dappoichè hanno violati i patti e il giuramento, che han fatto.	18 Then fear and dread of them came upon all the people, who said: "There is no truth or justice among them; they violated the agreement and the oath that they swore."
19 E Bacchide mosse il campo verso Gerusalemme, e si avvicinò a Bethzeca, e fece mettere le mani addosso a molti, che si eran ritirati dal suo partito: e alcuni del popolo uccise, e li fe' gettare in un pozzo profondo.	19 Bacchides withdrew from Jerusalem and pitched his camp in Beth-zaith. He had many of the men arrested who deserted to him, throwing them into the great pit.
20 E diede il paese nelle mani di Alcimo, e lasciò a lui de' soldati per sostenersi: ed ei se ne andò a trovare il re.	20 He handed the province over to Alcimus, leaving troops to help him, while he himself returned to the king.
21 E Alcimo facea di tutto per istabilire il suo pontificato.	21 Alcimus spared no pains to maintain his high priesthood,
22 E si raunarono intorno a lui tutti i perturbatori del popolo, e padroneggiavano nella terra di Giuda, e fecero mali grandi ad Israele.	22 and all those who were disturbing their people gathered about him. They took possession of the land of Judah and caused great distress in Israel.
23 Ma Giuda, riflettendo a tutte le vessazioni fatte da Alcimo e da quelli, che erano con lui contro i figliuoli d'Israele, le quali erano molto peggiori, che quelle fatte dalle nazioni,	23 When Judas saw all the evils that Alcimus and his men were bringing upon the Israelites, more than even the Gentiles had done,
24 Andò in giro per tutte le parti della Giudea, e gastigava quei disertori, e finirono di scorrere quel paese.	24 he went about all the borders of Judea and took revenge on the men who had deserted, preventing them from going out into the country.
25 Ma vedendo Alcimo, che Giuda e i suoi partigiani erano superiori di forze, e conoscendo di non poter ad essi far testa, se ne tornò al re, e gli accusò di molti delitti.	25 But when Alcimus saw that Judas and his followers were gaining strength and realized that he could not oppose them, he returned to the king and accused them of grave crimes.
26 E il re mandò Nicanore uno de' suoi grandi di prima sfera, il quale era nemico dichiarato d'Israele, e gli diede commissione di distrugger quel popolo.	26 Then the king sent Nicanor, one of his famous officers, who was a bitter enemy of Israel, with orders to destroy the people.
27 E Nicanore si portò a Gerusalemme con grande esercito, e mandò gente a parlare di pace con Giuda, e co' suoi fratelli per ingannarli,	27 Nicanor came to Jerusalem with a large force and deceitfully sent to Judas and his brothers this peaceable message:
28 Dicendo: Non sia guerra tra me e voi; io verrò con poca comitiva a vedervi amichevolmente.	28 "Let there be no fight between me and you. I will come with a few men to meet you peaceably."
29 E andò a trovar Giuda, e si salutarono scambievolmente con cortesia, ma i nemici stavano pronti per metter le mani addosso a Giuda.	29 So he came to Judas, and they greeted one another peaceably. But Judas' enemies were prepared to seize him.
30 E Giuda riseppe come quegli eran venuti a lui con cattive intenzioni, e n'ebbe paura, e non volte più vederlo in viso.	30 When he became aware that Nicanor had come to him with treachery in mind, Judas was afraid and would not meet him again.
31 E il Nicanore avendo inteso come erano state scoperte le sue trame, andò incontro a Giuda per combatterla presso a Caphar-Salama.	31 When Nicanor saw that his plan had been discovered, he went out to fight Judas near Capharsalama.
32 E dell'esercito di Nicanore restaron morti circa cinque mila uomini. E quelli si ritirarono nella città di David.	32 About five hundred men of Nicanor's army fell; the rest fled to the City of David.
33 E dopo questo Nicanore salì al monte di Sion; e venner fuori un numero di sacerdoti a salutarlo bonariamente, e a fargli vedere gli olocausti, che si offerivano per il re.	33 After this, Nicanor went up to Mount Zion. Some of the priests from the sanctuary and some of the elders of the people came out to greet him peaceably and to show him the holocaust that was being offered for the king.
34 Ma egli li derise e li sprezzo e trattolli come profani, e parlò arrogantemente,	34 But he mocked and ridiculed them, defiled them, and spoke disdainfully.
35 E giurò con ira, e disse: Se non mi sarà dato nelle mani Giuda e il sua esercito, subito che io tornerò colla vittoria metterò il fuoco a questa casa. E se n'andò fieramente sdegnato:	35 In a rage he swore: "If Judas and his army are not delivered to me at once, when I return victorious I will burn this temple down." He went away in great anger.
36 E i sacerdoti andarono a presentarsi davanti all'altare e al tempio, e dissero piangendo:	36 The priests, however, went in and stood before the altar and the sanctuary. They wept and said:
37 Tu, Signore, eleggesti questa casa, affinché in essa fosse invocato il tuo nome, ed ella fosse casa di orazione e di preghiera pel popolo tuo:	37 "You have chosen this house to bear your name, to be a house of prayer and petition for your people.
38 Gastiga quest'uomo e il suo esercito, e periscano di spada: ricordati delle loro bestemmie, e non permettere ch'ei sussistano.	38 Take revenge on this man and his army, and let them fall by the sword. Remember their blasphemies, and do not let them continue."
39 E Nicanore parti da Gerusalemme, e si accampò vicino a Bethoron, e gli venner incontra le milizie della Siria.	39 Nicanor left Jerusalem and pitched his camp at Beth-horon, where the Syrian army joined him.
40 E Giuda si avvicinò ad Adarsa con tre mila uomini; e fece orazione Giuda, e disse:	40 But Judas camped in Adasa with three thousand men. Here Judas uttered this prayer:
41 Perché i nunzi mandati da Sennacherib bestemmiaron contro di te, o Signore, venne un Angelo, il quale uccise cento ottantacinque mila de' loro.	41 "When they who were sent by the king blasphemed, your angel went out and killed a hundred and eighty-five thousand of them.
42 Stermina nella stessa guisa in quest'oggi dinanzi a noi quest'esercito, e tutti gli altri conoscano, come indegnamente egli ha parlato del tuo santuario; e giudicalo tu secondo la sua malvagità.	42 In the same way, crush this army before us today, and let the rest know that Nicanor spoke wickedly against your sanctuary; judge him according to his wickedness."
43 E gli eserciti vennero alle mani ai tredici del mese di Adar, e le schiere di Nicanore furon rotte, ed egli il primo morì nella zuffa.	43 The armies met in battle on the thirteenth day of the month Adar. Nicanor's army was crushed, and he himself was the first to fall in the battle.
44 E quando l'esercito di Nicanore vide, che questi era morto, getturon l'armi, e fuggirono.	44 When his army saw that Nicanor was dead, they threw down their arms and fled.
45 E i Giudei gl'inseguirono un' intera giornata da Adazer fino a Gazara, e tenevan lor dietro sonando le trombe per avviso di tutti.	45 The Jews pursued them a day's journey, from Adasa to near Gazara, blowing the trumpets behind them as signals.
46 E usciva gente da tutti i castelli della Giudea, che erano all'intorno, e davano loro addosso, onde quelli tornavano a voltar faccia ai vincitori, e tutti quanti perirono di spada, e non ne restò neppur uno.	46 From all the surrounding villages of Judea people came out and closed in on them. They hemmed them in, and all the enemies fell by the sword; not a single one escaped.
47 E quelli presero le loro spoglie, e troncaron la testa e la mano di Nicanore, la quale egli aveva alzata arrogantemente, e le portarono, e le appesero in vista di Gerusalemme.	47 Then the Jews collected the spoils and the booty; they cut off Nicanor's head and his right arm, which he had lifted up so arrogantly. These they brought to Jerusalem and displayed there.
48 Il popolo si rallegrò sommamente, e passaron quel giorno in gran festa.	48 The people rejoiced greatly, and observed that day as a great festival.
49 E Giuda ordinò, che si celebrasse tutti gli anni quella solennità ai tredici del mese di Adar.	49 They decreed that it should be observed every year on the thirteenth of Adar.
50 E la terra di Giuda fu in pace per pochi giorni.	50 And for a short time the land of Judah was quiet.
