1 Toram figliuolo di Achab cominciò a regnare sopra Israele in Samaria l'anno decimo ottavo di Josaphat re di Giuda, ed ei regnò dodici anni.	1 Joram, son of Ahab, became king of Israel in Samaria (in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, and he reigned for twelve years).
2 E fece il male nel cospetto del Signore, ma non quanto suo padre, e sua madre: perocché egli tolse via le statue di Baal, fatte dal padre suo.	2 He did evil in the LORD'S sight, though not as much as his father and mother. He did away with the pillar of Baal, which his father had made,
3 Con tutto ciò egli stette fisso ne' peccati di Jeroboam figliuolo di Nabat, il quale indusse Israele a peccare, e non se ne distaccò.	3 but he still clung to the sin to which Jeroboam, son of Nebat, had lured Israel; this he did not give up.
4 Or Mesa re di Moab teneva quantità grande di bestiami, e pagava al re d'Israele cento mila agnelli, e cento mila arieti colle loro lane.	4 Now Mesha, king of Moab, who raised sheep, used to pay the king of Israel as tribute a hundred thousand lambs and the wool of a hundred thousand rams.
5 Ed egli, morto che fu Achab, ruppe i patti, che avea col re d'Israele.	5 But when Ahab died, the king of Moab had rebelled against the king of Israel.
6 E il re Joram allora partì da Samaria, e fece rassegna di tutto Israele.	6 Joram as king mustered all Israel, and when he set out on a campaign from Samaria,
7 E mandò a dire a Josaphat re di Giuda: Il re di Moab si è ribellato da me, vieni meco a fargli guerra. E quegli rispose: Verrò: chi è con te, è con me: il popol mio è tuo popolo, e i miei cavalli sono tuoi cavalli.	7 he sent the king of Judah the message: "The king of Moab is in rebellion against me. Will you join me in battle against Moab?" "I will," he replied. "You and I shall be as one, your people and mine, and your horses and mine as well."
8 E soggiunse: Da qual parte aneleremo noi? E quegli rispose: Pel deserto dell'Idumea.	8 They discussed the route for their attack, and settled upon the route through the desert of Edom.
9 Si mossero adunque il re d'Israele, il re di Giuda, e il re di Edom, e fecero un giro di sette giorni di strada, e mancava l'acqua all'esercito, e alle bestie, che gli andavan dietro.	9 So the king of Israel set out, accompanied by the king of Judah and the king of Edom. After their roundabout journey of seven days the water gave out for the army and for the animals with them.
10 E il re d'Israele disse: Ahi, ahi, ahi; il Signore ha riuniti insieme noi tre regi, per darci in potere di Moab.	10 "Alas!" exclaimed the king of Israel. "The LORD has called together these three kings to put them in the grasp of Moab."
11 Ma Josaphat disse: V'ha egli qui un profeta del Signore, affine d'implorare per mezzo di lui l'aiuto del Signore? E uno dei servi del re d'Israele gli rispose: Havvi Eliseo figliuolo di Saphath, il quale dava l'acqua alle mani ai Elia.	11 But the king of Judah asked, "Is there no prophet of the LORD here through whom we may inquire of the LORD?" One of the officers of the king of Israel replied, "Elisha, son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah, is here."
12 E Josaphat disse: Il Signore parla per sua bocca. E andarono a trovarlo il re d'Israele, e Josaphat re di Giuda, e il re di Edom.	12 "He has the word of the LORD," the king of Judah agreed. So the kings of Israel, Judah, and Edom went down to Elisha.
13 Or Eliseo disse al re d'Israele:Che ho io da far con te? Vattene da' profeti del padre tuo, e della tua madre. E il re d'Israele gli disse: Per qual motivo il Signore ha uniti insieme tre regi, per darli nelle mani di Moab?	13 "What do you want with me?" Elisha asked the king of Israel. "Go to the prophets of your father and to the prophets of your mother." "No," the king of Israel replied. "The LORD has called these three kings together to put them in the grasp of Moab."
14 Ed Eliseo gli disse: Viva il Signore degli eserciti, al cospetto del quale io sto: se io non avessi rispetto a Josaphat re di Giuda, io non ti avrei dato retta, né ti avrei guardato in faccia.	14 Then Elisha said, "As the LORD of hosts lives, whom I serve, were it not that I respect the king of Judah, I should neither look at you nor notice you at all.
15 Ora voi conducetemi un sonatore di arpa: e mentre il sonatore arpeggiava cantando, la mano del Signore fu sopra di lui, ed egli disse:	15 Now get me a minstrel." When the minstrel played, the power of the LORD came upon Elisha
16 Il Signore dice così: Fate nel letto di questo torrente delle fosse, e delle fosse.	16 and he announced: "Thus says the LORD, 'Provide many catch basins in this wadi.'
17 Imperocché il Signore dice: Voi non vedrete vento, né pioggia, e questo letto sarà ripieno di acque, e berete voi, e la vostra gente, e le vostre bestie.	17 For the LORD says, 'Though you will see neither wind nor rain, yet this wadi will be filled with water for you, your livestock, and your pack animals to drink.'
18 E questo è poco pel Signore: egli di più darà anche Moab nelle vostre mani.	18 And since the LORD does not consider this enough, he will also deliver Moab into your grasp.
19 Ed espugnerete tutte le città forti, e tutte le città ragguardevoli, e troncherete tutti gli alberi da frutto, e turerete tutte le sorgive delle acque, e tutte le più grasse campagne ricoprirete di sassi.	19 You shall destroy every fortified city, fell every fruit tree, stop up all the springs, and ruin every fertile field with stones."
20 La mattina adunque in quell' ora, in cui suole offerirsi il sagrifizio, subitamente le acque principiarono a scorrere per la strada di Edom, e la terra fu inondata dalle acque.	20 In the morning, at the time of the sacrifice, water came from the direction of Edom and filled the land.
21 Or tutti i Moabiti avendo udito, come quei re si eran mossi per combatterli, raunatono tutti quelli, che portavano balteo, e all'insù, e si fermarono ai confini.	21 Meanwhile, all Moab heard that the kings had come to give them battle; every man capable of bearing arms was called up and stationed at the border.
22 Ed essendosi alzati alla punta del dì, allorché venne a spuntare il sole dirimpetto alle acque, i Moabiti videro di contro le acque rosse come sangue.	22 Early that morning, when the sun shone on the water, the Moabites saw the water at a distance as red as blood.
23 E dissero: Egli è sangue di uccisi: i re son venuti tra di loro a battaglia, e si son trucidati gli uni gli altri. Va ora, o Moab, a raccoglier la preda.	23 "This is blood!" they exclaimed. "The kings have fought among themselves and killed one another. Quick! To the spoils, Moabites!"
24 E si avanzarono verso gli alloggiamenti d'Israele; ma gl'Israeliti si mossero, e sbaragliarono i Moabiti, i quali voltaron loro le spalle. I vincitori pertanto inseguirono, e trucidarono i Moabiti,	24 But when they reached the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and attacked the Moabites, who fled from them. They ranged through the countryside striking down the Moabites, and
25 E distrussero le loro città, e gettando ognuno una pietra ne' campi migliori, li riempirono, e turarono tutte le sorgive delle acque, e tagliarono tutte le piante da frutto: non vi restarono se non le mura di mattone: ma la città fu circondata da' frombolieri, e atterata in gran parte.	25 destroying the cities; each of them cast stones onto every fertile field till they had loaded it down; all the springs they stopped up and every useful tree they felled. Finally only Kir-hareseth was left behind its stone walls, and the slingers had surrounded it and were attacking it.
26 Avendo adunque veduto il re di Moab, come i nemici erano i più forti, prese seco settecento uomini valorosi di mano, affine di sforzare il campo del re di Edom; ma non ottener l'intento.	26 When he saw that he was losing the battle, the king of Moab took seven hundred swordsmen to break through to the king of Aram, but he failed.
27 E preso il suo figliuolo primogenito, che dovea succedergli nel regno, lo offerse in olocausto sopra le mura, la qual cosa fece gran commozione negl' Israeliti, e subito si ritiraron da lui, e se ne tornarono alle case loro.	27 So he took his first-born, his heir apparent, and offered him as a holocaust upon the wall. The wrath against Israel was so great that they gave up the siege and returned to their own land.
