Prima lettera a Timoteo 1

1 Paolo, apostolo di Gesù Cristo per ordine di Dio, nostro salvatore, e di Cristo Gesù, nostra speranza,	1 Paul, apostle of Christ Jesus appointed by the command of God our Saviour and of Christ Jesus ourhope,
2 a Timoteo, per la fede figliolo diletto: grazia, misericordia e pace da Dio Padre e da Cristo Gesù Signore nostro.	2 to Timothy, true child of mine in the faith. Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from ChristJesus our Lord.
3 Ti rinnovo la raccomandazione che ti feci partendo per la Macedonia: di restare ad Efeso per far intendere a certuni che non devono insegnare altre dottrine,	3 When I was setting out for Macedonia I urged you to stay on in Ephesus to instruct certain people not tospread wrong teaching
4 nè andar dietro a favole e genealogie interminabili e più adatte a suscitar questioni che a far progredir l'opera di Dio fondata sulla fede.	4 or to give attention to myths and unending genealogies; these things only foster doubts instead offurthering God's plan which is founded on faith.
5 Or il fine del precetto è la carità procedente da cuore puro, da buona coscienza e da fede sincera;	5 The final goal at which this instruction aims is love, issuing from a pure heart, a clear conscience and asincere faith.
6 dalle quali cose deviando, alcuni si son perduti in vani cicaleggi,	6 Some people have missed the way to these things and turned to empty speculation,
7 colla pretensione d'esser dottori in legge, senza capire nè quel che dicono, nè quel che danno a intendere.	7 trying to be teachers of the Law; but they understand neither the words they use nor the matters aboutwhich they make such strong assertions.
8 Or noi ben sappiamo che la legge è buona, se uno se ne serve legittimamente,	8 We are wel aware that the Law is good, but only provided it is used legitimately,
9 persuaso che la legge non è fatta pel giusto, ma per gli ingiusti e i ribelli, per gli empi e i peccatori, per gli scellerati e i profani, per i parricidi e matricidi, per gli assassini,	9 on the understanding that laws are not framed for people who are upright. On the contrary, they are forcriminals and the insubordinate, for the irreligious and the wicked, for the sacrilegious and the godless; they arefor people who kil their fathers or mothers and for murderers,
10 per i fornicatori, per i sodomiti, per i ladri d'uomini, per i bugiardi e spergiuri e per ogni altro che s'opponga alla sana dottrina,	10 for the promiscuous, homosexuals, kidnappers, for liars and for perjurers -- and for everything else thatis contrary to the sound teaching
11 la quale è secondo il glorioso Vangelo del beato Iddio, che è stato a me affidato.	11 that accords with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, the gospel that was entrusted to me.
12 Rendo grazie a Cristo Gesù, Signor nostro, che mi ha reso forte e mi ha stimato fedele, ponendo nel ministero me,	12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength. By cal ing me into his service he has judgedme trustworthy,
13 che prima ero bestemmiatore e persecutore e oppressore, ma ottenni misericordia, perchè agii per ignoranza, nella mia incredulità;	13 even though I used to be a blasphemer and a persecutor and contemptuous. Mercy, however, wasshown me, because while I lacked faith I acted in ignorance;
14 e la grazia del Signore nostro sovrabbondò colla fede e colla carità che è in Cristo Gesù.	14 but the grace of our Lord filled me with faith and with the love that is in Christ Jesus.
15 Parola fedele e degna d'ogni accettazione: Cristo Gesù venne in questo mondo a salvare i peccatori, dei quali il primo son io,	15 Here is a saying that you can rely on and nobody should doubt: that Christ Jesus came into the worldto save sinners. I myself am the greatest of them;
16 ma appunto per questo ottenni misericordia, affinchè in me per il primo Cristo Gesù facesse vedere tutta quanta la sua pazienza, ad esempio di coloro che in avvenire crederanno in lui, per la vita eterna.	16 and if mercy has been shown to me, it is because Jesus Christ meant to make me the leading exampleof his inexhaustible patience for al the other people who were later to trust in him for eternal life.
17 Al Re dei secoli, immortale ed invisibile, al solo Dio onore e gloria per tutti i secoli dei secoli. Così sia.	17 To the eternal King, the undying, invisible and only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
18 Questo avvertimento ti raccomando, o figlio Timoteo, che, secondo le profezie già fatte a tuo riguardo, conforme a quelle tu combatta la buona battaglia,	18 Timothy, my son, these are the instructions that I am giving you, in accordance with the words oncespoken over you by the prophets, so that in their light you may fight like a good soldier
19 conservando la fede e la buona coscienza, rigettata la quale, alcuni han fatto naufragio rispetto alla fede,	19 with faith and a good conscience for your weapons. Some people have put conscience aside andwrecked their faith in consequence.
20 come Imeneo e Alessandro, che io ho consegnati a Satana, perchè imparino a non bestemmiare.	20 I mean men like Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan so that they may learnnot to be blasphemous.
