| 1 Visione d'Abdia. Queste cose dice il Signore Dio a Edom: — Noi ne abbiamo ricevuta la notizia dal Signore, che ha mandato un araldo alle nazioni, (a dire): « Sorgete! Andiamo a fargli guerra ». — | 1 The oracle of God which Habakkuk the prophet saw. |
| 2 « Ecco che io t'ho fatto piccolino fra le nazioni, e tu sei molto dispregevole. | 2 O LORD, how long shall I cry for help, and thou wilt not hear? Or cry to thee "Violence!" and thou wilt not save? |
| 3 La superbia, del tuo cuore t'ha levato in alto, perchè abiti nei crepacci delle rocce e in luoghi alti hai collocato il tuo trono, e dici in cuor tuo: « Chi potrà farmi calare in terra? » | 3 Why dost thou make me see wrongs and look upon trouble? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. |
| 4 Anche se tu fossi andato in alto come l'aquila e avessi posto fra le stelle il tuo nido, io ti farò di scendere anche di lassù? dice il Signore. | 4 So the law is slacked and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous, so justice goes forth perverted. |
| 5 Se fossero venuti da te i ladri, se gli assassini, durante la notte, come faresti a star cheto? Non ti avrebbero rubato quanto per loro sarebbe sufficiente? Se i vendemmiatori fossero entrati nella tua vigna, avrebbero forse lasciato per te qualche grappolo? | 5 Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told. |
| 6 Come mai hanno frugato Esaù, hanno scrutati i suoi ripostigli ? | 6 For lo, I am rousing the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, who march through the breadth of the earth, to seize habitations not their own. |
| 7 Ti han cacciato fino ai confini, tutti i tuoi alleati si son burlati di te, han prevalso contro di te i tuoi amici, coloro che mangiano alla tua mensa ti han tese delle insidie. In lui non c'è prudenza. | 7 Dread and terrible are they; their justice and dignity proceed from themselves. |
| 8 Non è in quel giorno — dice il Signore — che io torrò i saggi all'Idumea, e la prudenza dal monte di Esaù? | 8 Their horses are swifter than leopards, more fierce than the evening wolves; their horsemen press proudly on. Yea, their horsemen come from afar; they fly like an eagle swift to devour. |
| 9 i tuoi forti avran paura in pieno meriggio, e così non resterà un uomo, sul monte di Esaù. | 9 They all come for violence; terror of them goes before them. They gather captives like sand. |
| 10 Per le uccisioni, per le ingiustizie commesse contro il tuo fratello Giacobbe, tu sarai coperto di confusione e perirai in eterno. | 10 At kings they scoff, and of rulers they make sport. They laugh at every fortress, for they heap up earth and take it. |
| 11 In quel giorno, quando tu stavi contro di lui, quando i nemici facevan prigioniero il suo esercito e gli stranieri entravano nelle sue porte, e gettavano le sorti sopra Gerusalemme, tu pure eri come uno di loro. | 11 Then they sweep by like the wind and go on, guilty men, whose own might is their god! |
| 12 Ma tu non disprezzerai il tuo fratello nel suo giorno, nel giorno del suo esilio, tu non ti rallegrerai sopra i figli di Giuda nel giorno della loro rovina; tu non proferirai (contro di loro) altezzose parole nel giorno dell'angoscia; | 12 Art thou not from everlasting, O LORD my God, my Holy One? We shall not die. O LORD, thou hast ordained them as a judgment; and thou, O Rock, hast established them for chastisement. |
| 13 e non entrerai nella porta del mio popolo nel giorno della sua rovina, e non lo disprezzerai anche tu pei suoi mali nel giorno della sua distruione e non, sarai spedito contro il suo esercito nel giorno della sua sconfitta; | 13 Thou who art of purer eyes than to behold evil and canst not look on wrong, why dost thou look on faithless men, and art silent when the wicked swallows up the man more righteous than he? |
| 14 e non starai alle uscite (delle strade) per uccidere i fuggitivi, e non ne accerchierai gli avanzi nel giorno della tribolazione; | 14 For thou makest men like the fish of the sea, like crawling things that have no ruler. |
| 15 perché è vicino il giorno del Signore per tutte le nazioni: come tu hai fatto sarà fàttò a te: (Dio) farà cadere sul tuo capo quello che ti è dovuto. | 15 He brings all of them up with a hook, he drags them out with his net, he gathers them in his seine; so he rejoices and exults. |
| 16 Infatti, comò voi avete be vuto sulla mia santa montagna, così berranno continuamente tutte le genti, e berranno e tracanneranno, e poi saranno come se non fossero. | 16 Therefore he sacrifices to his net and burns incense to his seine; for by them he lives in luxury, and his food is rich. |
| 17 Ma sul monte di Sion vi sarà la salvezza, e sarà santo e la casa di Giacobbe avrà il dominio di coloro che l'avevan dominata. | 17 Is he then to keep on emptying his net, and mercilessly slaying nations for ever? |
| 18 La casa di Giacobbe sarà fuoco, la casa di Giuseppe sarà fiamma, e la casa d'Esaù sarà paglia, e sarà da essa bruciata, divorata, e non resteranno avanzi della casa d'Esaù, per chè il Signore ha parlato. | |
| 19 Quelli che stanno a mezzodì occuperanno le montagne di Esaù, quelli della pianura assoggetteranno i Filistei: possederanno il territorio d'Efraim, e il territorio di Samaria, e Beniamino sarà padrone di Galaad, | |
| 20 e gli esuli di questo esercito dei figli d'Israele avranno il dominio di tutti i luoghi dei Cananèi fino a Sarepta, e gli esuli di Gerusalemme che sono nel Bosforo possederanno le città del mezzogiorno. | |
| 21 E i liberatori saliranno al monte di Sion per giudicare là montagna d'Esaù, e il regno sarà del Signore. | |
