1 Or il sopradetto Simone, delatore del tesoro e della patria, parlava male di Onia, come se egli avesse istigato Eliodoro a tali cose, e fosse lui l'autore dei mali:	1 But Simon, of whom we spoke before, and of his country, spoke ill of Onias, as though he had incited Heliodorus to do these things, and had been the promoter of evils:
2 Il provveditore della città, il difensore della sua nazione, lo zelatore della legge di Dio, ardiva dirlo insidioso nemico dello stato.	2 And he presumed to call him a traitor to the kingdom, who provided for the city, and defended his nation, and wed zealous for the law of God.
3 Siccome le inimicizie erano giunte a tal segno che da alcuni degli amici di Simone eran commessi degli omicidi,	3 But when the enmities proceeded so far, that murders also were committed by some of Simon's friends:
4 Onia, considerando i pericoli della discordia e l'insensato agire d'Apollonio, il quale, come governatore della Celesiria e della Fenicia favoriva la malizia di Simone, andò a trovare il re,	4 Onias considering the danger of this contention, and that Apollonius, who was the governor of Celesyria and Phenicia, was outrageous, which increased the malice of Simon, went to the king,
5 non per accusare i suoi concittadini, ma per la comune utilità di tutto il popolo, a cui pensava,	5 Not to be an accuser of his countrymen, but with a view to the common good of all the people.
6 e perchè vedeva bene che senza l'intervento del re era impossibile pacificare le cose e far cessare Simone dalle sue follie.	6 For he saw that, except the king took care, it was impossible that matters should be settled in peace, or that Simon would cease from his folly.
7 Morto Seleuco e succeduto a lui Antioco, soprannominato Ispirane, Giasone, fratello d'Onia, tramando d'usurpare il pontificato,	7 But after the death of Seleucus, when Antiochus, who was called the Illustrious, had taken possession of the kingdom, Jason the brother of Onias ambitiously sought the high priesthood:
8 andò a trovare il re e gli promise trecentosessanta talenti, e, dei redditi, altri ottanta talenti,	8 And went to the king, promising him three hundred and sixty talents of silver, and out of other revenues fourscore talents.
9 e di più altri centocinquanta talenti per il permesso di fondar un ginnasio e un'efebia e dare a quelli di Gerusalemme la cittadinanza d'Antiochia.	9 Besides this he promised also a hundred and fifty more, if he might have license to set him up a place for exercise, and a place for youth, and to entitle them, that were at Jerusalem, Antiochians.
10 Avutone dal re il permesso, ed ottenuto il principato, cominciò subito a far passare i suoi connazionali ai costumi dei pagani.	10 Which when the king had granted, and he had gotten the rule into his hands, forthwith he began to bring over his countrymen to the fashion of the heathens.
11 Tolte le franchigie che l'umanità dei re (grazie ai buoni uffici di Giovanni, padre di quell'Eupolemo che fu mandato a Roma come ambasciatore per fare alleanza e amicizia) aveva concesse, egli distrusse i diritti dei cittadini, e stabilì leggi perverse.	11 And abolishing those things, which had been decreed of special favour by the kings in behalf of the Jews, by the means of John the father of that Eupolemus, who went ambassador to Rome to make amity and alliance, he disannulled the lawful ordinances of the citizens, and brought in fashions that were perverse.
12 Egli ardì fondare, sotto la stessa fortezza, un ginnasio, e di mettere nei lupanari il fior della gioventù.	12 For he had the boldness to set up, U under the very castle, a place of exercise, and to put all the choicest youths in brothel houses.
13 Così cominciato, tanto s'avanzò e progredì il modo di vivere alla pagana e alla straniera, in seguito all'infame e inaudita malvagità dell'empio e non sacerdote Giasone,	13 Now this was not the beginning, but an increase, and progress of heathenish and foreign manners, through the abominable and unheard of wickedness of Jason, that impious wretch and no priest.
14 che i sacerdoti non eran più intenti al ministero dell'altare, e, disprezzato il tempio, e negletti i sacrifizi, correvano a prender parte alla palestra, ai premi indegni e agli esercizi del disco.	14 Insomuch that the priests were not now occupied about the offices of the altar, but despising the temple and neglecting the sacrifices, hastened to be partakers of the games, and of the unlawful allowance thereof, and of the exercise of the discus.
15 Non facendo alcun caso degli onori della patria, stimavano le migliori glorie quelle greche.	15 And setting nought by the honours of their fathers, they esteemed the Grecian glories for the best:
16 A causa di esse s'abbandonavano a pericolose contese, e zelavano le usanze di quelli e desideravano essere in tutto simili a quelli che erano stati loro nemici e distruttori.	16 For the sake of which they incurred a dangerous contention, and followed earnestly their ordinances, and in all things they coveted to be like them, who were their enemies and murderers.
17 Non si violano mai impunemente le leggi divine. Ma ciò lo dimostrerà il tempo che segue.	17 For acting wickedly against the laws of God doth not pass unpunished: but this the time following will declare.
18 Mentre si celebravano a Tiro i giuochi quinquennali, ai quali era presente il re,	18 Now when the game that was used every fifth year was kept at Tyre, the king being present,
19 il criminale Giasone mandò a Gerusalemme degli uomini perversi, a portare trecento di dramme d'argento pel sacrifizio di Ercole; ma quelli che le portarono chiesero che non fossero spese nei sacrifizi, che non era conveniente, ma fossero impiegate in altri usi.	19 The wicked Jason sent from Jerusalem sinful men to carry three hundred didrachmas of silver for the sacrifice of Hercules; but the bearers thereof desired it might not be bestowed on the sacrifices, because it was not necessary, but might be deputed for other charges.
20 Così erano state offerte pel sacrifizio di Ercole da chi l'aveva mandate, ma per opera di quelli che le portarono furono impiegate nella costruzione di triremi.	20 So the money was appointed by him that sent it to the sacrifice of Hercules: but because of them that carried it was employed for the making of galleys.
21 Quando Antioco, dopo aver mandato in Egitto Apollonio, figlio di Mnesteo, a trattare con i grandi del re Tolomeo Filometore, s'accorse d'essere escluso dagli affari del regno, e pensando al suo interesse, partì per Ioppe e venne a Gerusalemme,	21 Now when Apollonius the son of Mnestheus was sent into Egypt to treat with the nobles of king Philometor, and Antiochus understood that he was wholly excluded from the affairs of the kingdom, consulting his own interest, he departed thence and came to Joppe, and from thence to Jerusalem:
22 fu accolto con magnificenza da Giasone e dalla città, ove entrò in mezzo a fiaccole accese e canti di lode: indi tornò coll'esercito nella Fenicia.	22 Where he was received in a, magnificent manner by Jason, and the city, and came in with torch lights, and with praises, end from thence he returned with his army into Phenicia.
23 Tre anni dopo, Giasone mandò Menelao, fratello del sopra detto Simone, a portar dei danari al re, e a riceverne gli ordini su affari d'importanza.	23 Three years afterwards Jason sent Menelaus, brother of the aforesaid Simon, to carry money to the king, and to bring answers from him concerning certain necessary affairs.
24 Ma Menelao, acquistatosi il favore del re coi magnificare lo splendore della sua potenza, fece venire nelle sue mani il sommo sacerdozio, dando trecento talenti d'argento più di Giasone,	24 But he being recommended to the king, when he had magnified the appearance of his power, got the high priesthood for himself, by offering more than Jason by three hundred talents of silver.
25 e ricevuti gli ordini del re, se ne tornò. Egli, nulla avendo degno del sacerdozio, aveva il cuore d'un crudele tiranno e la rabbia d'una fiera selvaggia.	25 So having received the king's mandate, he returned bringing nothing worthy of the high priesthood: but having the mind of a cruel tyrant, and the rage of a savage beast.
26 Così Giasone, che aveva ingannato il suo fratello, fu pure ingannato e cacciato in esilio nel paese degli Ammoniti.	26 Then Jason, who had undermined his own brother, being himself undermined, was driven out a fugitive into the country of the Ammonites
27 Or Menelao ottenne il principato, ma nulla faceva riguardo al danaro promesso al re, non ostante che Sostrato, governatore della cittadella, l'esigesse,	27 So Menelaus got the principality: but as for the money he had promised to the king he took no care, when Sostratus the governor of the castle called for
28 avendo l'incarico d'esigere i tributi. Per la qual cosa tutt'e due furono chiamati davanti ai re:	28 For to him appertained the gathering of the taxes: wherefore they were both called before the king.
29 Menelao fu doposto dal pontificato, nel quale ebbe per successore Lisimaco suo fratello, e Sostrato fu mandato al governo di Cipro.	29 And Menelaus was removed from the priesthood, Lysimachus his brother succeeding: and Sostratus was made governor of the Cyprians.
30 Mentre succedevano queste cose, accadde che quei di Tarso e quelli di Mallo si rivoltarono, perchè erano stati dati come dono ad Antiochide, concubina del re.	30 When these things were in doing, it fell out that they of Tharsus and Mallos raised a sedition, because they were given for a gift to Antiochis, the king's concubine.
31 Il re, partito in fretta per sedarli, lasciò a far le sue veci Andronico, uno dei grandi della sua corte.	31 The king therefore went in all haste to appease them, leaving Andronicus, one of his nobles, for his deputy.
32 Allora Menelao, pensando d'avere scelto il tempo opportuno, rubò alcuni vasi d'oro al tempio, e ne fece un dono ad Andronico, dopo averne venduti degli altri in Tiro e nelle città vicine.	32 Then Menelaus supposing that he had found a convenient time, having stolen certain vessels of gold out of the temple, gave them to Andronicus, and others he had sold at Tyre, and in the neighbouring cities.
33 Saputa con certezza la cosa, Onia lo rimproverò, mettendosi però in luogo sicuro ad Antiochia presso Dafne.	33 Which when Onias understood most certainly, he reproved him, keeping himself in a safe place at Antioch beside Daphne.
34 Per questo, Menelao, andato a trovare Andronico, lo pregò ad uccidere Onia. E (Andronico) andato a trovare Onia, dandogli la destra con giuramento, sebbene gli lasciasse dei sospetti, lo persuase a uscir dall'asilo, e subito, senza alcun riguardo alla giustizia, lo uccise.	34 Whereupon Menelaus coming to Andronicus, desired him to kill Onias. And he went to Onias, and gave him his right hand with an oath, and (though he were suspected by him) persuaded him to come forth out of the sanctuary, and immediately slew him, without any regard to justice.
35 Per questo fatto, non soltanto i Giudei, ma anche le altre nazioni restarono indignate, e mal sopportarono l'ingiusta morte di sì grand'uomo.	35 For which cause not only the Jews, but also the other nations, conceived indignation, and were much grieved for the unjust murder of so great a man.
36 Così quando il re tornò dalla Cilicia, i Giudei d'Antiochia insieme ai Greci andarono a lamentarsi dell'iniqua morte d'Onia.	36 And when the king was come back from the places of Cilicia, the Jews that were at Antioch, and also the Creaks went to him: complaining of the unjust murder of Onias.
37 Antioco ne ebbe l'animo contristato, e mosso a pietà dal caso d'Onia, versò delle lacrime, ricordando la sobrietà e la modestia del defunto;	37 Antiochus therefore was grieved in his mind for Onias, and being moved to pity, shed tears, remembering the sobriety and modesty of the deceased.
38 e, acceso di sdegno, ordinò die Andronico, spogliato della porpora, fosso menato attorno per tutta la città e che al sacrilego fosse tolta la vita nel medesimo luogo nel quale aveva commessa l'empietà contro Onia. Così il Signore gli diede il meritato castigo.	38 And being inflamed to anger, he commanded Andronicus to be stripped of his purple, and to be led about through all the city: and that in the same place wherein he had committed the impiety against Onias, the sacrilegious wretch should be put to death, the Lord repaying him his deserved punishment.
39 Avendo poi Lisimaco fatti molti sacrilegi nel tempio ad istigazione di Menelao, divulgatasi la fama del molto oro portato via, si radunò il popolo contro Lisimaco,	39 Now when many sacrileges had been committed by Lysimachus in the temple by the counsel of Menelaus, and the rumour of it was spread abroad, the multitude gathered themselves together against Lysimachus, a great quantity of gold being already carried away.
40 e siccome le turbo tumultuavano e gli animi eran pieni d'ira, Lisimaco, armati circa tre mila uomini, capitanati da un certo tiranno, avanzato nell'età come nella demenza, cominciò a far violenze.	40 Wherefore the multitude making an insurrection, and their minds being filled with anger, Lysimachus armed about three thousand men, and began to use violence, one Tyrannus being captain, a man far gone both in age, and in madness.
41 Ma, conosciuti i disegni di Lisimaco, chi si armò di sassi, chi di groassi bastoni, e alcuni gettarono ad dosso a Lisimaco la cenere,	41 But when they perceived the attempt of Lysimachus, some caught up stones, some strong clubs: and some threw ashes upon Lysimachus,
42 molti ne ferirono, alcuni ne uccisero, tutto il resto fu messo in fuga, e lo stesso sacrilego rimase ucciso presso l'erario.	42 And many of them were wounded, and some struck down to the ground, but all were put to flight: and as for the sacrilegious fellow himself, they slew him beside the treasury.
43 Di tutte queste cose si cominciò ad agitar la causa contro Menelao, ù	43 Now concerning these matters, an accusation was laid against Menelaus.
44 e quando il re andò a Tiro, tre uomini mandati dagli anziani riferirono a lui l'affare.	44 And when the king was come to Tyre, three men were sent from the ancients to plead the cause before him.
45 Menelao, ridotto a mal partito, promise grossa somma di danaro a Tolomeo, se gli rendeva favorevole il re.	45 But Menelaus being convicted, promised Ptolemee to give him much money to persuade the king to favour him.
46 Tolomeo andò a trovare il re mentre se ne stava sotto i portici a prendere il fresco, e gli fece cambiar sentenza.	46 So Ptolemee went to the king in a certain court where he was, as it were to cool himself, and brought him to be of another mind:
47 Così egli assolse Menelao dai delitti, sebbene fosse reo di tutto il male, e gl'infelici che, anche se avessero esposta la loro causa agli Sciti, sarebbero stati dichiarati innocenti, li condannò a morte.	47 So Menelaus who was guilty of all the evil, was acquitted by him of the accusations: and those poor men, who, if they had pleaded their cause even before Scythians, should have been judged innocent, were condemned to death.
48 Furono dunque in fretta puniti ingiustamente quelli che avevan sostenuta la causa della città, del popolo e dei vasi sacri.	48 Thus they that prosecuted the cause for the city, and for the people, and the sacred vessels, did soon suffer unjust punishment.
49 Gli stessi Tiri ne furono indignati, e furono generosissimi per la loro sepoltura.	49 Wherefore even the Tyrians being moved with indignation, were liberal towards their burial.
50 Ma intanto Menelao, per l'avarizia dei potenti, conservò l'autorità, e crebbe nella malizia a danno dei cittadini.	50 And so through the covetousness of them that were in power, Menelaus continued in authority, increasing in malice to the betraying of the citizens.
