| 1 - Sansone adunque discese in Tamnata e, avendovi veduto una donna delle figlie dei Filistei | 1 Samson went down to Timnah, and at Timnah he saw one of the daughters of the Philistines. |
| 2 ascese e l'annunziò a suo padre e a sua madre dicendo: «Ho visto una donna di Tamnata delle figlie dei Filistei, che vi prego di prendermi in moglie». | 2 Then he came up, and told his father and mother, "I saw one of the daughters of the Philistines at Timnah; now get her for me as my wife." |
| 3 Gli risposero il padre e la madre: «Non v'è dunque tra le figlie dei tuoi fratelli e in tutto il nostro popolo una donna [per te], perchè tu voglia prendere una moglie tra i Filistei, che sono incirconcisi?». Ma Sansone disse al padre suo: «Prendimi costei, poichè essa piacque a' miei occhi». | 3 But his father and mother said to him, "Is there not a woman among the daughters of your kinsmen, or among all our people, that you must go to take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?" But Samson said to his father, "Get her for me; for she pleases me well." |
| 4 I suoi genitori però non sapevano che questa cosa era volontà di Dio, che cercava un'occasione contro i Filistei, i quali in quel tempo dominavano sopra Israele. | 4 His father and mother did not know that it was from the LORD; for he was seeking an occasion against the Philistines. At that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel. |
| 5 Discese pertanto Sansone col padre e colla madre in Tamnata; giunti alle vigne di quella borgata, venne loro incontro un leoncello feroce, che mandava ruggiti. | 5 Then Samson went down with his father and mother to Timnah, and he came to the vineyards of Timnah. And behold, a young lion roared against him; |
| 6 Ma lo spirito del Signore investì Sansone, che, senza aver nulla in mano, squarciò il leone, come avrebbe fatto a pezzi un capretto; ma non volle dir nulla al padre ed alla madre. | 6 and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion asunder as one tears a kid; and he had nothing in his hand. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done. |
| 7 Discese adunque e parlò alla donna che gli era piaciuta, | 7 Then he went down and talked with the woman; and she pleased Samson well. |
| 8 e dopo alcuni giorni ritornò colà per prenderla. Avendo però deviato dalla via per vedere la carcassa del leone, osservò uno sciame d'api nelle fauci della belva e un favo di miele, | 8 And after a while he returned to take her; and he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion, and behold, there was a swarm of bees in the body of the lion, and honey. |
| 9 che si prese in mano e lo mangiò cammin facendo. Venuto poi dove si trovavano il padre e la madre ne fece loro parte ed essi pure ne mangiarono. Tuttavia non volle dir loro d'aver preso quel miele dal corpo del leone. | 9 He scraped it out into his hands, and went on, eating as he went; and he came to his father and mother, and gave some to them, and they ate. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey from the carcass of the lion. |
| 10 Disceso allora il padre di Sansone alla donna, fece un banchetto per il figliuolo, essendo tale il costume dei giovani. | 10 And his father went down to the woman, and Samson made a feast there; for so the young men used to do. |
| 11 Come i cittadini di quel paese lo videro, gli assegnarono trenta compagni per stare in compagnia di lui. | 11 And when the people saw him, they brought thirty companions to be with him. |
| 12 E Sansone disse loro: «Vi voglio proporre un quesito: se voi lo scioglierete durante i sette giorni del banchetto, vi darò trenta sindoni e trenta tuniche; | 12 And Samson said to them, "Let me now put a riddle to you; if you can tell me what it is, within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty festal garments; |
| 13 ma se voi non saprete risolverlo dovrete dare a me le trenta sindoni e le trenta tuniche». E avendo essi risposto: «Proponi il tuo problema e noi l'ascolteremo», | 13 but if you cannot tell me what it is, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty festal garments." And they said to him, "Put your riddle, that we may hear it." |
| 14 disse loro: «Da colui che mangia è uscito il cibo, e dal forte venne fuori la dolcezza.» Per tre giorni essi non poterono sciogliere l'enigma | 14 And he said to them, "Out of the eater came something to eat. Out of the strong came something sweet." And they could not in three days tell what the riddle was. |
| 15 e avvicinandosi il settimo giorno, dissero alla moglie di Sansone: «Accarezza tuo marito e persuadilo a indicarti il significato del suo quesito; che se ti rifiuterai daremo fuoco a te e alla casa del padre tuo. Siamo forse stati invitati alle nozze per dover essere spogliati?». | 15 On the fourth day they said to Samson's wife, "Entice your husband to tell us what the riddle is, lest we burn you and your father's house with fire. Have you invited us here to impoverish us?" |
| 16 Essa allora si fece vedere in lagrime presso Sansone e si lamentò con lui, dicendo: «Tu mi odii e non mi vuoi bene, se ti rifiuti di farmi conoscere l'enigma da te proposto ai figli del mio popolo». Ma egli rispose: «Non lo volli indicare nè a mio padre nè a mia madre; come potrei indicarlo a te?». | 16 And Samson's wife wept before him, and said, "You only hate me, you do not love me; you have put a riddle to my countrymen, and you have not told me what it is." And he said to her, "Behold, I have not told my father nor my mother, and shall I tell you?" |
| 17 Per tutti i sette giorni del convito essa non cessò dal piangere dinanzi a lui, finchè al settimo giorno, per togliersene la molestia, glielo fece conoscere ed essa subito lo manifestò ai suoi concittadini, | 17 She wept before him the seven days that their feast lasted; and on the seventh day he told her, because she pressed him hard. Then she told the riddle to her countrymen. |
| 18 i quali il settimo giorno, prima che tramontasse il sole, dissero a Sansone: «Che v'ha di più dolce del miele e di più forte del leone?». Al che Sansone disse: «Se voi non aveste arato colla mia giovenca, non avreste trovato [la chiave] del quesito.» | 18 And the men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down, "What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion?" And he said to them, "If you had not plowed with my heifer, you would not have found out my riddle." |
| 19 Lo investì allora lo spirito del Signore e disceso in Ascalone, vi uccise trenta uomini, a cui tolse le vesti, per darle a quelli che avevano sciolto l'enigma; poi adiratosi grandemente ascese alla casa del padre suo, | 19 And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty men of the town, and took their spoil and gave the festal garments to those who had told the riddle. In hot anger he went back to his father's house. |
| 20 mentre la moglie prese per marito uno fra i suoi amici e compagni di nozze. | 20 And Samson's wife was given to his companion, who had been his best man. |
