| 1 - Similmente anche le donne sian soggette ai loro mariti, affinchè, anche se alcuni non credono alla parola siano guadagnati, senza la parola, dalla condotta esemplare delle loro mogli, | 1 Likewise you wives, be submissive to your husbands, so that some, though they do not obey the word, may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, |
| 2 poichè considereranno la vostra condotta casta e rispettosa. | 2 when they see your reverent and chaste behavior. |
| 3 L'ornamento delle mogli non sia all'esterno, come l'acconciatura dei capelli, la moltitudine dei gioielli o lo sfoggio di vesti diverse; | 3 Let not yours be the outward adorning with braiding of hair, decoration of gold, and wearing of fine clothing, |
| 4 sia invece l'interiore, il cuore, [l'ornamento] incorruttibile d'uno spirito tranquillo e modesto, che è tanto prezioso agli occhi di Dio. | 4 but let it be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable jewel of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. |
| 5 Così, di fatto, una volta si adornavano le sante donne che speravano in Dio, stando soggette ai loro mariti, | 5 So once the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves and were submissive to their husbands, |
| 6 come Sara, che ubbidiva ad Abramo, chiamandolo «signore»; [quella Sara] della quale voi siete figliuole se fate il bene senza lasciarvi sbigottire da qualsiasi spavento. | 6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are now her children if you do right and let nothing terrify you. |
| 7 E anche voi, o mariti, convivete con saggezza con le mogli e rendete loro onore come a vaso più fragile, essendo anche le donne coeredi della grazia della vita; affinchè le vostre orazioni non abbiano da essere impedite. | 7 Likewise you husbands, live considerately with your wives, bestowing honor on the woman as the weaker sex, since you are joint heirs of the grace of life, in order that your prayers may not be hindered. |
| 8 Insomma [siate] tutti concordi, compassionevoli, amanti dei fratelli, misericordiosi, modesti, umili; | 8 Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love of the brethren, a tender heart and a humble mind. |
| 9 non rendete male per male, nè maledizione per maledizione; ma invece benedite, perchè a questo siete stati chiamati: a possedere in eredità la benedizione. | 9 Do not return evil for evil or reviling for reviling; but on the contrary bless, for to this you have been called, that you may obtain a blessing. |
| 10 Poichè chi vuol amare la vita e vedere giorni beati, raffreni la sua lingua dal male e le sue labbra non parlino inganno. | 10 For "He that would love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking guile; |
| 11 Schivi il male e faccia il bene, cerchi la pace e le vada dietro; | 11 let him turn away from evil and do right; let him seek peace and pursue it. |
| 12 perchè gli occhi del Signore sono sopra i giusti e le sue orecchie [attente] alle loro orazioni; ma la faccia del Signore sta contro coloro che fanno il male. | 12 For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those that do evil." |
| 13 E chi potrà farvi del male, se sarete zelanti del bene? | 13 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is right? |
| 14 Ma anche se aveste a soffrire qualcosa per la giustizia, beati voi! Nessuna loro minaccia vi sgomenti e vi conturbi. | 14 But even if you do suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, |
| 15 Ma benedite nei vostri cuori Cristo Signore, pronti sempre a dar soddisfazione a chiunque vi domandi ragione della speranza che è in voi; | 15 but in your hearts reverence Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to make a defense to any one who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence; |
| 16 ma [ciò farete] con modestia e rispetto, forti della vostra buona coscienza, in guisa che quando sparlano di voi, rimangano confusi quelli che calunniano la vostra buona condotta in Cristo. | 16 and keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are abused, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. |
| 17 Poichè è meglio che soffriate (se tale è la volontà di Dio) facendo il bene, che facendo il male; | 17 For it is better to suffer for doing right, if that should be God's will, than for doing wrong. |
| 18 perchè anche Cristo è morto una volta per i nostri peccati, - Egli giusto per gli ingiusti, - per offrire voi a Dio; messo a morte quanto alla carne, ma vivificato per lo Spirito. | 18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit; |
| 19 Nel quale [Spirito] andò a predicare anche a quelli spiriti che erano in carcere, | 19 in which he went and preached to the spirits in prison, |
| 20 i quali eran stati una volta increduli, allorchè la pazienza di Dio stava aspettando ai giorni di Noè, mentre si fabbricava l'arca, nella quale pochi, cioè otto anime, scamparono dall'acqua. | 20 who formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. |
| 21 Figura codesta di quel battesimo che ora vi salva, - non ripulimento delle sozzure della carne, ma contratto di buona coscienza fatto con Dio, - per mezzo della risurrezione di Gesù Cristo, | 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, |
| 22 il quale sta alla destra di Dio Padre, dopo aver ingoiata la morte perchè noi diventassimo eredi della vita eterna. Egli, andato in cielo, si è assoggettati gli angeli, le Potestà e le Virtù. | 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him. |
