1 - Sei giorni prima di Pasqua Gesù venne a Betania, dov'era Lazzaro, il morto da lui risuscitato.	1 Jesus therefore, six days before the pasch, came to Bethania, where Lazarus had been dead, whom Jesus raised to life.
2 E quivi gli fecero una cena; Marta serviva e Lazzaro era uno dei commensali.	2 And they made him a supper there: and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that were at table with him.
3 Maria poi prese una libbra d'unguento di nardo di gran valore, e ne unse i piedi di Gesù e glieli asciugò coi suoi capelli; e la casa fu ripiena dell'odore dell'unguento.	3 Mary therefore took a pound of ointment of right spikenard, of great price, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.
4 Allora uno dei suoi discepoli, Giuda Iscariote, il quale doveva tradirlo, disse:	4 Then one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, he that was about to betray him, said:
5 «Perchè non si è venduto quest'unguento per trecento danari, e non lo si è dato ai poveri?».	5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?
6 Egli poi disse ciò non perchè si curasse dei poveri; ma perchè era ladro e, siccome teneva la borsa, asportava ciò che vi si metteva.	6 Now he said this, not because he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and having the purse, carried the things that were put therein.
7 Gesù però gli disse: «Lasciala stare; ella ha serbato questo profumo per il giorno della mia sepoltura,	7 Jesus therefore said: Let her alone, that she may keep it against the day of my burial.
8 poichè i poveri li avete sempre con voi, ma non sempre avrete me».	8 For the poor you have always with you; but me you have not always.
9 Pertanto un gran numero di Giudei seppe che Gesù era colà, e vennero non solo per Gesù, ma anche per veder Lazzaro da lui risuscitato dai morti.	9 A great multitude therefore of the Jews knew that he was there; and they came, not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
10 Ma i capi dei sacerdoti deliberarono di far morire anche Lazzaro,	10 But the chief priests thought to kill Lazarus also:
11 perchè per causa sua, molti se ne partivano da loro e credevano in Gesù.	11 Because many of the Jews, by reason of him, went away, and believed in Jesus.
12 Il giorno seguente la gran folla, accorsa alla festa, saputo che Gesù veniva a Gerusalemme,	12 And on the next day, a great multitude that was to come to the festival day, when they had heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
13 prese dei rami di palme e uscì a incontrarlo, gridando: «Osanna! Benedetto Colui che viene nel nome del Signore, il re d'Israele!».	13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried: Hosanna, blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, the king of Israel.
14 E Gesù, trovato un asinello, vi montò sopra, secondo quanto sta scritto:	14 And Jesus found a young ass, and sat upon it, as it is written:
15 «Non temere, o figliuola di Sion! Ecco il tuo re che viene, seduto sopra un puledro d'asina».	15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy king cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.
16 I suoi discepoli non compresero dapprima queste cose; ma quando Gesù fu glorificato, allora si rammentarono che quelle cose erano per lui state scritte e che quelle avevano essi compiute in lui.	16 These things his disciples did not know at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things to him.
17 La folla poi, che era con lui quando evocò Lazzaro dalla tomba e lo risuscitò dai morti, gli rendeva testimonianza;	17 The multitude therefore gave testimony, which was with him, when he called Lazarus out of the grave, and raised him from the dead.
18 e la folla gli era andata incontro, perchè aveva sentito aver egli fatto questo miracolo.	18 For which reason also the people came to meet him, because they heard that he had done this miracle.
19 Perciò i Farisei dissero tra loro: «Vedete che non approdiamo a nulla? Ecco che il mondo intero va a lui!».	19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves: Do you see that we prevail nothing? behold, the whole world is gone after him.
20 Ora tra quelli che erano saliti alla festa per adorare vi erano dei Gentili,	20 Now there were certain Gentiles among them, who came up to adore on the festival day.
21 i quali, accostatisi a Filippo, che era di Betsaida in Galilea, lo pregavano dicendo: «Signore, vogliamo vedere Gesù».	21 These therefore came to Philip, who was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying: Sir, we would see Jesus.
22 Filippo ne parlò ad Andrea, e Andrea e Filippo lo dissero a Gesù.	22 Philip cometh, and telleth Andrew. Again Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
23 Gesù rispose loro: «È venuta l'ora, nella quale il Figliuol dell'uomo sarà glorificato.	23 But Jesus answered them, saying: The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.
24 In verità, in verità vi dico che se il grano di frumento, caduto in terra, non muore, resta solo; ma se muore, produce molto frutto.	24 Amen, amen I say to you, unless the grain of wheat falling into the ground die,
25 Chi ama la propria vita, la perderà, e chi odia la propria vita in questo mondo, la conserverà per la vita eterna.	25 Itself remaineth alone. But if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world, keepeth it unto life eternal.
26 Chi mi vuol servire, mi segua; perchè dove sarò io, quivi sarà anche il mio servo. E chi servirà me, sarà glorificato dal Padre mio.	26 If any man minister to me, let him follow me; and where I am, there also shall my minister be. If any man minister to me, him will my Father honour.
27 Ora l'anima mia è turbata. E che dirò io? Padre, liberami da quest'ora. Ma io sono venuto appunto per quest'ora.	27 Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour. But for this cause I came unto this hour.
28 Padre, glorifica il tuo nome!». E dal cielo venne una voce: «L'ho glorificato e ancora lo glorificherò».	28 Father, glorify thy name. A voice therefore came from heaven: I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.
29 Ora la folla, ch'era presente e aveva sentito la voce, diceva esser stato un tuono, mentre altri dicevano: «Un angelo gli ha parlato».	29 The multitude therefore that stood and heard, said that it thundered. Others said: An angel spoke to him.
30 Gesù ripigliò a dire: «Questa voce è venuta non per me, ma per voi.	30 Jesus answered, and said: This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.
31 Adesso si fa il giudizio del mondo; adesso il principe di questo mondo sarà cacciato fuori.	31 Now is the judgment of the world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
32 Ed io, quando sarò innalzato da terra, trarrò tutto a me».	32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things to myself.
33 E ciò diceva per indicare di qual morte sarebbe morto.	33 (Now this he said, signifying what death he should die.)
34 Gli rispose la folla: «Noi abbiamo imparato dalla legge che il Cristo vivrà in eterno. Come adunque puoi dire che il Figliuol dell'uomo deve essere inalzato? Chi è questo Figliuol dell'uomo?».	34 The multitude answered him: We have heard out of the law, that Christ abideth for ever; and how sayest thou: The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?
35 Gesù pertanto rispose loro: «La luce è in voi ancora per un poco. Camminate finchè avete la luce, affinchè le tenebre non vi sorprendano; chi cammina nelle tenebre non sa dove vada.	35 Jesus therefore said to them: Yet a little while, the light is among you. Walk whilst you have the light, that the darkness overtake you not. And he that walketh in darkness, knoweth not whither he goeth.
36 Finchè avete la luce, credete nella luce affinchè siate figli della luce». Così parlò Gesù; poi se ne andò e si nascose da loro.	36 Whilst you have the light, believe in the light, that you may be the children of light. These things Jesus spoke; and he went away, and hid himself from them.
37 Benchè avesse fatto tanti miracoli in loro presenza, pure non credettero in lui,	37 And whereas he had done so many miracles before them, they believed not in him:
38 perchè s'adempisse la parola detta dal profeta Isaia: «Signore, chi ha creduto alla nostra parola? E il braccio del Signore a chi mai è stato rivelato?».	38 That the saying of Isaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he said: Lord, who hath believed our hearing? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?
39 Essi non potevano credere, perchè Isaia aveva detto:	39 Therefore they could not believe, because Isaias said again:
40 «Egli ha accecato i loro occhi e indurito i loro cuori, affinchè non vedano con gli occhi e non intendano col cuore e non si convertano, in modo che io possa guarirli».	40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart, that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.
41 Queste cose disse Isaia, quando vide la gloria di lui e parlò di lui.	41 These things said Isaias, when he saw his glory, and spoke of him.
42 Molti, tuttavia, anche tra i capi, credettero in lui; ma non lo confessavano per paura dei Farisei, per non essere scacciati dalla sinagoga,	42 However, many of the chief men also believed in him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, that they might not be cast out of the synagogue.
43 giacchè essi amavano più la gloria degli uomini che la gloria di Dio.	43 For they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.
44 Ma Gesù esclamò e disse: «Chi crede in me, crede non in me, ma in Colui che mi ha mandato;	44 But Jesus cried, and said: He that believeth in me, doth not believe in me, but in him that sent me.
45 e chi vede me, vede Colui che mi ha mandato.	45 And he that seeth me, seeth him that sent me.
46 Io son venuto luce al mondo, affinchè chiunque crede in me, non resti nelle tenebre;	46 I am come a light into the world; that whosoever believeth in me, may not remain in darkness.
47 e se qualcuno ascolta le mie parole e non le osserva, io non lo giudicherò, perchè io non sono venuto a giudicare il mondo, ma a salvare il mondo.	47 And if any man hear my words, and keep them not, I do not judge him: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
48 Chi disprezza me e non accoglie le mie parole, ha chi lo giudica: la parola che ho proferito, essa lo giudicherà nell'ultimo giorno.	48 He that despiseth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him; the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
49 Perchè io non ho parlato da me stesso; ma il Padre, che mi ha mandato, mi ha prescritto egli stesso quello che io dovevo dire e predicare.	49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father who sent me, he gave me commandment what I should say, and what I should speak.
50 E io so che il suo comando è la vita eterna. Perciò le cose che io dico, le dico come il Padre me le ha dette».	50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting. The things therefore that I speak, even as the Father said unto me, so do I speak.
