BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - Piacque a Dario di costituire sopra il regno centoventi satrapi che stessero per tutto il suo dominio;	1 and Darius the Mede received the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two.
2 e sopra questi, tre principi, tra i quali uno era Daniele, a cui i satrapi rendessero conto e il re non soffrisse troppa molestia.	2 It pleased Darius to appoint a hundred and twenty satraps over his kingdom for the various parts,
3 Ora Daniele superava tutti i principi e satrapi, perchè lo spirito di Dio abbondava di più in lui.	3 and over them three presidents -- of whom Daniel was one -- to whom the satraps were to beresponsible. This was to safeguard the king's interests.
4 Per tanto avendo il re divisato di porre su di lui la cura di tutto il regno, i principi e i satrapi cercavano un'occasione per accagionare Daniele dalla parte del re; ma non poterono trovare cagione, nè sospetto, perchè era fedele e non si trovava in lui mancamento nè sospetto alcuno.	4 This Daniel, by virtue of the marvel ous spirit residing in him, was so evidently superior to the otherpresidents and satraps that the king considered appointing him to rule the whole kingdom.
5 Dissero dunque quegli uomini: «Contro questo Daniele non troviamo nessun appiglio se non forse nella legge del suo Dio».	5 The presidents and satraps, in consequence, started hunting for some affair of state by which theycould discredit Daniel; but they could find nothing to his discredit, and no case of negligence; he was sopunctilious that they could not find a single instance of maladministration or neglect.
6 Allora i principi e i satrapi colsero il re alla impensata e gli parlarono così: «O re Dario, che tu possa vivere in eterno,	6 These men then thought, 'We shal never find a way of discrediting Daniel unless we try something todo with the law of his God.'
7 tutti i principi del tuo regno, i magistrati, i satrapi, i senatori e i giudici hanno deliberato per l'emissione di un decreto imperiale e un editto: "Che chiunque, nel volgere di trenta giorni, vorrà presentare qualche petizione a Dio e all'uomo all'infuori che a te, o re, sia gettato nella fossa dei leoni".	7 The presidents and satraps then went in a body to the king. 'King Darius,' they said, 'live for ever!
8 Or dunque ratifica la deliberazione e sottoscrivi il decreto, e che: "non sia cambiato quello che è stato stabilito dai Medi e dai Persiani, e a nessuno sia permesso trasgredire"».	8 We are all agreed, presidents of the realm, magistrates, satraps, councillors and governors, that theking should issue an edict enforcing the fol owing regulation: Whoever within the next thirty days prays toanyone, divine or human, other than to yourself, Your Majesty, is to be thrown into the lions' den.
9 A questo modo il re Dario formulò il decreto e lo firmò.	9 Your Majesty, ratify the edict at once by signing this document, making it unalterable, as befits the lawof the Medes and the Persians, which cannot be revoked.'
10 Ma Daniele avutane conoscenza, della legge, cioè, stabilita, con tutto ciò, rientrato in casa sua, a finestre spalancate, dalla sua stanza che guardava contro Gerusalemme, nelle tre ore del giorno si gettava sulle ginocchia e faceva adorazione e presentava gli omaggi al suo Dio, come anche per l'avanti aveva consuetudine di fare.	10 King Darius accordingly signed the document embodying the edict.
11 Intanto quegli uomini fattisi curiosamente a spiare, sorpresero Daniele in atto di pregare e di supplicare il suo Dio.	11 When Daniel heard that the document had been signed, he retired to his house. The windows of hisupstairs room faced towards Jerusalem. Three times each day, he went down on his knees, praying and givingpraise to God as he had always done.
12 E presentatisi, così parlarono al re sopra l'editto: «O re, non hai tu ordinato che chiunque, durante il volgersi di trenta giorni, domandasse qualche cosa o agli dèi o agli uomini fuori che a te fosse gettato nella fossa dei leoni?». A cui rispondendo il re disse: «Così è veramente secondo il decreto dei Medi e dei Persiani a cui non è lecito contravvenire».	12 These men came along in a body and found Daniel praying and pleading with God.
13 Allora rispondendo soggiunsero in presenza del re: «Daniele, uno dei figli esuli di Giuda, non ha fatto alcun conto della tua legge e dell'editto che tu hai imposto; ma nelle tre ore del giorno fa la sua consueta preghiera».	13 They then went to the king and reminded him of the royal edict, 'Have you not signed an edictforbidding anyone for the next thirty days to pray to anyone, divine or human, other than to yourself, YourMajesty, on pain of being thrown into the lions' den?' 'The decision stands', the king replied, 'as befits the law ofthe Medes and the Persians, which cannot be revoked.'
14 Udite che ebbe il re queste parole ne rimase molto contristato e dispose in cuor suo di liberare Daniele, e fino al cader del sole si travagliava per trovargli una via di scampo.	14 They then said to the king, 'Your Majesty, this man Daniel, one of the exiles from Judah, disregardsboth you and the edict which you have signed: he is at his prayers three times each day.'
15 Ma quegli uomini indovinando il pensiero del re gli dissero: «Tu sai, o re, che secondo la legge dei Medi e dei Persiani qualunque decreto sancito dal re non è più lecito cambiare».	15 When the king heard these words he was deeply distressed and determined to save Daniel; he rackedhis brains until sunset to find some way to save him.
16 Il re allora diede l'ordine, e condussero via Daniele e lo gettarono nella fossa dei leoni. E il re disse a Daniele: «Il tuo Dio che sempre adori egli ti libererà».	16 But the men kept pressing the king, 'Your Majesty, remember that in conformity with the law of theMedes and the Persians, no edict or decree can be altered when once issued by the king.'
17 Poi fu portata una pietra e fu collocata sopra la bocca della fossa, e il re vi appose il sigillo col suo anello e coll'anello dei suoi nobili affinchè nulla si tentasse contro Daniele.	17 The king then ordered Daniel to be brought and thrown into the lion pit. The king said to Daniel, 'YourGod, whom you have served so faithful y, wil have to save you.'
18 Quindi il re fece ritorno a casa sua e senza andar a cena si coricò e non volle che gli si ponesse davanti cibo alcuno e non potè neppure prender sonno.	18 A stone was then brought and laid over the mouth of the pit; and the king sealed it with his own signetand with that of his noblemen, so that there could be no going back on the original decision about Daniel.
19 Al primo albeggiare alzatosi, si diresse frettoloso alla fossa dei leoni,	19 The king returned to his palace, spent the night in fasting and refused to receive any of hisconcubines. Sleep eluded him,
20 e giunto vicino alla fossa con voce di pianto chiamò Daniele e disse verso di lui: «Daniele servo del Dio vivente, il tuo Dio a cui sempre servi avrà egli potuto liberarti dai leoni?».	20 and at the first sign of dawn he got up and hurried to the lion pit.
21 E Daniele rispondendo al re disse: «O re, che tu possa vivere in eterno!	21 As he approached the pit he cal ed in anguished tones to Daniel, 'Daniel, servant of the living God!Has your God, whom you serve so faithful y, been able to save you from the lions?'
22 Il mio Dio mandò il suo angelo e chiuse le bocche dei leoni e non mi hanno fatto alcun nocumento, perchè la mia giustizia è stata riconosciuta dinanzi a lui, come anche a tuo riguardo io non ho commesso nessun delitto!».	22 Daniel answered the king, 'May Your Majesty live for ever!
23 Allora il re grandemente si rallegrò di lui e ordinò che Daniele fosse cavato fuori dalla fossa, e fu fatto uscire e non si trovò in lui lesione alcuna, perchè avea avuto fede nel suo Dio. Ma intanto	23 My God sent his angel who sealed the lions' jaws; they did me no harm, since in his sight I amblameless; neither have I ever done you any wrong, Your Majesty.'
24 per comando del re, furono condotti quegli uomini che avevan accusato Daniele e gettati nella fossa dei leoni, e con essi i figli loro e le loro mogli: non erano arrivati al suolo della fossa, che già i leoni li avevano atterrati, stritolandone tutte le loro ossa.	24 The king was overjoyed and ordered Daniel to be released from the pit. Daniel was released from thepit and found to be quite unhurt, because he had trusted in his God.
25 Dopo di che, il re Dario scrisse a tutti i popoli, alle schiatte e lingue di tutte le sue terre: «Pace a voi in gran copia!	25 The king then sent for the men who had accused Daniel and had them thrown into the lion pit, andtheir wives and children too; and before they reached the floor of the pit the lions had seized them and crushedtheir bones to pieces.
26 Da me è stato decretato, che in tutto il mio dominio e regno mio sia riverito e venerato il Dio di Daniele. Perchè egli è il Dio vivente ed eterno nei secoli, e il suo regno non sarà distrutto e il suo potere resterà in eterno.	26 King Darius then wrote to al nations, peoples and languages dwel ing throughout the world: 'May youprosper more and more!
27 Egli è che libera e salva, che fa prodigi e miracoli in cielo e in terra, che liberò Daniele dalla fossa dei leoni».	27 This is my decree: Throughout every dominion of my realm, let al tremble with fear before the God ofDaniel: He is the living God, he endures for ever, his kingdom wil never be destroyed and his empire nevercome to an end.
28 E così Daniele si mantenne al suo posto durante il regno di Dario e il regno di Ciro di Persia.	28 He saves, sets free, and works signs and wonders in the heavens and on earth; he has saved Danielfrom the power of the lions.'
	29 This Daniel flourished in the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus the Persian.
