| 1 - «A cagione dei peccati che avete commesso contro il Signore, sarete condotti schiavi in Babilonia, da Nabucodonosor re dei Babilonesi. | 1 A copy of a letter which Jeremiah sent to those who were to be taken to Babylon as captives by the king of the Babylonians, to give them the message which God had commanded him. |
| 2 Entrati dunque che sarete in Babilonia, vi resterete per molti anni e per lungo tempo, fino a sette generazioni, in seguito vi ricondurrò via di là in pace. | 2 Because of the sins which you have committed before God, you will be taken to Babylon as captives by Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Babylonians. |
| 3 Ora voi vedrete, in Babilonia, dèi di oro e di argento e di pietra e di legno, portati a spalle, che incutono timore ai gentili. | 3 Therefore when you have come to Babylon you will remain there for many years, for a long time, up to seven generations; after that I will bring you away from there in peace. |
| 4 State attenti perciò a non farvi anche voi imitatori degli atti degli stranieri, e di non averne paura, e che alcun timore non vi prenda di essi. | 4 Now in Babylon you will see gods made of silver and gold and wood, which are carried on men's shoulders and inspire fear in the heathen. |
| 5 Quando dunque vedrete affollate davanti e di dietro le turbe adoratrici, direte dentro di voi stessi: - Tu devi essere adorato, Signore! | 5 So take care not to become at all like the foreigners or to let fear for these gods possess you, when you see the multitude before and behind them worshiping them. |
| 6 L'Angelo mio è con voi e io stesso farò la disamina delle vostre anime. - | 6 But say in your heart, "It is thou, O Lord, whom we must worship." |
| 7 Per quanto la lingua loro sia stata levigata da un artiere, e siano indorati e inargentati, son falsi e non possono parlare. | 7 For my angel is with you, and he is watching your lives. |
| 8 E come si farebbe con una fanciulla che ami far figura, si fa con questi, parandoli di oro a profusione. | 8 Their tongues are smoothed by the craftsman, and they themselves are overlaid with gold and silver; but they are false and cannot speak. |
| 9 Corone veramente d'oro hanno sul capo i loro idoli, onde avviene che i sacerdoti ne sottraggono gli ori e gli argenti e se ne servono pei loro usi. | 9 People take gold and make crowns for the heads of their gods, as they would for a girl who loves ornaments; |
| 10 E li danno in prestito alle prostitute e ne abbigliano le meretrici, e quando li ripigliano dalle meretrici adornano di nuovo i loro dèi. | 10 and sometimes the priests secretly take gold and silver from their gods and spend it upon themselves, |
| 11 Ed essi non si possono preservare dalla ruggine e dalle tignuole, | 11 and even give some of it to the harlots in the brothel. They deck their gods out with garments like men--these gods of silver and gold and wood, |
| 12 benchè siano così sfarzosamente vestiti di porpora, hanno bisogno d'essere puliti la faccia dalla polvere del luogo, che presso di loro è molto abbondante. | 12 which cannot save themselves from rust and corrosion. When they have been dressed in purple robes, |
| 13 Un idolo in forma di uomo impugna lo scettro a guisa del giudice della contrada, ma non potrebbe mettere a morte chi gli facesse ingiuria. | 13 their faces are wiped because of the dust from the temple, which is thick upon them. |
| 14 Un altro stringe in mano una spada o una scure, ma non potrebbe difendersi, nè in guerra nè dai ladri. Da tutto questo si dànno a conoscere a voi che non sono dèi. | 14 Like a local ruler the god holds a scepter, though unable to destroy any one who offends it. |
| 15 Dunque non vogliate temerli. | 15 It has a dagger in its right hand, and has an axe; but it cannot save itself from war and robbers. |
| 16 Come un attrezzo comune guasto che a nulla serve, tali sono gli dèi di costoro. Collocati per le case, hanno le occhiaie piene di polvere sollevata dai piedi di quei che vanno e vengono. | 16 Therefore they evidently are not gods; so do not fear them. |
| 17 E come a un colpevole di lesa maestà si sbarrano contro le porte, o come a un morto condotto al sepolcro: così i sacerdoti assicurano con catenacci e serrami le porte, affinchè questi dèi non siano spogliati dai ladri. | 17 For just as one's dish is useless when it is broken, so are the gods of the heathen, when they have been set up in the temples. Their eyes are full of the dust raised by the feet of those who enter. |
| 18 Accendono loro delle lampade e in gran numero, delle quali non ne possono vedere alcuna; sono come le travi di casa. | 18 And just as the gates are shut on every side upon a man who has offended a king, as though he were sentenced to death, so the priests make their temples secure with doors and locks and bars, in order that they may not be plundered by robbers. |
| 19 Dicono che i rettili, che escono dalla terra, strisciano dentro del loro interno e li rodono con tutto il loro abbigliamento, ed essi nulla sentono. | 19 They light lamps, even more than they light for themselves, though their gods can see none of them. |
| 20 Hanno le facce annerite dal fumo che si fa in casa. | 20 They are just like a beam of the temple, but men say their hearts have melted, when worms from the earth devour them and their robes. They do not notice |
| 21 Sulle membra e sulla testa svolazzano le civette, gli allocchi, le rondini, gli uccelli e passeggiano i gatti. | 21 when their faces have been blackened by the smoke of the temple. |
| 22 Persuadetevi da questo che non sono dèi: quindi non vogliate temerli. | 22 Bats, swallows, and birds light on their bodies and heads; and so do cats. |
| 23 Anche la laminatura d'oro non è che per abbellimento; se uno non li forbisce dalla ruggine non risplendono; mentre li fondevano non sentivano. | 23 From this you will know that they are not gods; so do not fear them. |
| 24 Furono comperati ad alto prezzo, eppure in essi non c'è spirito di vita! | 24 As for the gold which they wear for beauty--they will not shine unless some one wipes off the rust; for even when they were being cast, they had no feeling. |
| 25 Non potendo muover piede, sono portati a spalle, a dimostrazione della loro ignobile impotenza dinanzi agli uomini. Siano confusi anche quelli che li venerano. | 25 They are bought at any cost, but there is no breath in them. |
| 26 Quindi, se rotolano a terra, non valgono a rizzarsi da sè; ma neppure se uno li colloca in piedi son essi che si reggono; come davanti ai morti, si apprestano a essi offerte. | 26 Having no feet, they are carried on men's shoulders, revealing to mankind their worthlessness. |
| 27 I loro sacerdoti vendono le vittime a essi destinate o le usano per sè; così le mogli, le quali saccheggiano il meglio, senza dar nulla al bisognoso e al mendico; | 27 And those who serve them are ashamed because through them these gods are made to stand, lest they fall to the ground. If any one sets one of them upright, it cannot move itself; and if it is tipped over, it cannot straighten itself; but gifts are placed before them just as before the dead. |
| 28 di più, esse toccano le cose sacrificate, si trovino di parto o nelle loro ricorrenze; persuadetevi da questo che non sono dèi; non vogliate temerli. | 28 The priests sell the sacrifices that are offered to these gods and use the money; and likewise their wives preserve some with salt, but give none to the poor or helpless. |
| 29 A che titolo dunque si chiamano dèi? perchè poi son le donne che presentano offerte a dèi di argento e di oro e di legno; | 29 Sacrifices to them may be touched by women in menstruation or at childbirth. Since you know by these things that they are not gods, do not fear them. |
| 30 e nei loro templi vi è un consesso di sacerdoti, colle tuniche stracciate, colla testa e la barba rasa e a capo scoperto, | 30 For why should they be called gods? Women serve meals for gods of silver and gold and wood; |
| 31 e urlano a squarciagola verso i loro dèi, come in un festino mortuario. | 31 and in their temples the priests sit with their clothes rent, their heads and beards shaved, and their heads uncovered. |
| 32 I sacerdoti sottraggono a loro gl'indumenti e ne vestono le proprie mogli e i propri figli. | 32 They howl and shout before their gods as some do at a funeral feast for a man who has died. |
| 33 Se gli idoli ricevono da qualcuno un maltrattamento o un beneficio, non glielo possono rendere; non hanno potestà di costituire, nè destituire alcun re. | 33 The priests take some of the clothing of their gods to clothe their wives and children. |
| 34 Così pure, non possono dare le ricchezze, nè ripagare un male. Se uno ha fatto un qualche voto e poi non lo adempie, essi non ne domandano conto. | 34 Whether one does evil to them or good, they will not be able to repay it. They cannot set up a king or depose one. |
| 35 Non possono salvare alcuno dalla morte, nè strappare dalle mani d'un prepotente, un debole. | 35 Likewise they are not able to give either wealth or money; if one makes a vow to them and does not keep it, they will not require it. |
| 36 A un cieco non potrebbero restituire la vista, nè cavare un pover uomo dalle necessità. | 36 They cannot save a man from death or rescue the weak from the strong. |
| 37 Non sentiranno pietà per le vedove e non potranno beneficare gli orfanelli; | 37 They cannot restore sight to a blind man; they cannot rescue a man who is in distress. |
| 38 simili al macigno d'una rupe sono i loro dèi di legno, di pietra e di oro e d'argento. Siano confusi coloro che li venerano. | 38 They cannot take pity on a widow or do good to an orphan. |
| 39 Come dunque si può credere o asserire che essi siano dèi? | 39 These things that are made of wood and overlaid with gold and silver are like stones from the mountain, and those who serve them will be put to shame. |
| 40 Ma i Caldei stessi ne perdono il rispetto, i quali, udito che un muto non riesce più a parlare, lo presentano a Bel supplicando che per virtù sua parli; | 40 Why then must any one think that they are gods, or call them gods? Besides, even the Chaldeans themselves dishonor them; |
| 41 quasi che dèi che non hanno movimento, potessero sentire; e quando poi si accorgono della loro impotenza, li abbandonano; i loro dèi infatti sono essi stessi privi di senso. | 41 for when they see a dumb man, who cannot speak, they bring him and pray Bel that the man may speak, as though Bel were able to understand. |
| 42 Certe donne, avviluppate di funicelle, stanno sedute lungo le strade attizzando un focherello di ossi d'olive. | 42 Yet they themselves cannot perceive this and abandon them, for they have no sense. |
| 43 E dopo che l'una di esse, tirata da qualche passante, seco lui ha giaciuto, disprezza la sua vicina che non è stata trovata degna come lei, e che la sua funicella non è stata rotta. | 43 And the women, with cords about them, sit along the passageways, burning bran for incense; and when one of them is led off by one of the passers-by and is lain with, she derides the woman next to her, because she was not as attractive as herself and her cord was not broken. |
| 44 Tutto quello che avviene attorno a loro è aberrazione. Come dunque si può credere e asserire che quelli siano dèi? | 44 Whatever is done for them is false. Why then must any one think that they are gods, or call them gods? |
| 45 Sono fabbricati da legnaioli e da orefici; ma non avranno altra forma che quella che vogliono i sacerdoti. | 45 They are made by carpenters and goldsmiths; they can be nothing but what the craftsmen wish them to be. |
| 46 Gli stessi artefici che li fabbricano, non fanno vita molto lunga. Potrebbero dunque mai, cose da essi fabbricate, essere dèi? | 46 The men that make them will certainly not live very long themselves; how then can the things that are made by them be gods? |
| 47 Hanno lasciato l'impostura e l'ignominia per quei che verranno. | 47 They have left only lies and reproach for those who come after. |
| 48 E quando la guerra e la sciagura piomba sopra di loro, i sacerdoti si consigliano insieme ove potersi nascondere coi loro dèi. | 48 For when war or calamity comes upon them, the priests consult together as to where they can hide themselves and their gods. |
| 49 Come dunque non dovrebbero accorgersi, se questi sono dèi o no, mentre non sanno liberarsi dalla guerra, nè cercarsi scampo dai mali? | 49 How then can one fail to see that these are not gods, for they cannot save themselves from war or calamity? |
| 50 Insomma, essendo essi di legno, indorati e inargentati, alla fine si verrà a conoscere che sono falsi, e da tutte le nazioni e da tutti i re, perchè è chiaro che non sono dèi, ma opere delle mani degli uomini e non hanno niente di divino in loro. | 50 Since they are made of wood and overlaid with gold and silver, it will afterward be known that they are false. |
| 51 È cosa patente dunque che non sono dèi, ma opera delle mani degli uomini e che niente di divino c'è in essi. | 51 It will be manifest to all the nations and kings that they are not gods but the work of men's hands, and that there is no work of God in them. |
| 52 Non potrebbero essi costituire un re di una regione, nè mandare la pioggia sopra gli uomini. | 52 Who then can fail to know that they are not gods? |
| 53 Non saprebbero decidere una causa, nè liberare un paese dall'oppressione, perchè non possono nulla, come le cornacchie tra cielo e terra. | 53 For they cannot set up a king over a country or give rain to men. |
| 54 E se un incendio scoppia nel tempio degli dèi di legno, argentati e indorati, i sacerdoti prendono la fuga e si salvano, ma quelli restano in mezzo, come le travi, preda del fuoco. | 54 They cannot judge their own cause or deliver one who is wronged, for they have no power; they are like crows between heaven and earth. |
| 55 Non possono far fronte a un re nè a una guerra. Come dunque si può credere o ritenere che sono dèi? | 55 When fire breaks out in a temple of wooden gods overlaid with gold or silver, their priests will flee and escape, but the gods will be burnt in two like beams. |
| 56 Dai ladri e dai furfanti non saprebbero difendersi gli dèi di legno, di pietra, dorati e inargentati; e lasciano che quelli, essendo più forti, | 56 Besides, they can offer no resistance to a king or any enemies. Why then must any one admit or think that they are gods? |
| 57 portino loro via l'oro e l'argento e gl'indumenti con cui sono coperti e che se ne vadano, essendo impotenti ad aiutarsi da sè. | 57 Gods made of wood and overlaid with silver and gold are not able to save themselves from thieves and robbers. |
| 58 Quindi essere un re che sfoggia la propria potenza, o un arnese domestico utile, di cui si compiace il possessore, o un'imposta della casa che custodisce ciò che è dentro, vale meglio che essere uno di questi dèi falsi. | 58 Strong men will strip them of their gold and silver and of the robes they wear, and go off with this booty, and they will not be able to help themselves. |
| 59 Il sole, la luna e le stelle, che hanno il loro splendore e la loro utile missione, obbediscono. | 59 So it is better to be a king who shows his courage, or a household utensil that serves its owner's need, than to be these false gods; better even the door of a house that protects its contents, than these false gods; better also a wooden pillar in a palace, than these false gods. |
| 60 Ugualmente il lampo, quando guizza, abbaglia; così il vento, in ogni regione spira. | 60 For sun and moon and stars, shining and sent forth for service, are obedient. |
| 61 E le nuvole, ricevuto che abbiano l'ordine da Dio, di scorrere tutta intera la terra, adempiono ciò che è stato loro comandato. | 61 So also the lightning, when it flashes, is widely seen; and the wind likewise blows in every land. |
| 62 Così la folgore scagliata dall'alto per incenerire monti e selve, fa quello che le è stato ordinato. Gl'idoli invece, nè in bellezza, nè in potere, sono paragonabili ad alcuno di questi esseri. | 62 When God commands the clouds to go over the whole world, they carry out his command. |
| 63 Quindi non c'è da credere, nè da asserire che siano dèi, mentre non possono pronunziarsi per alcuna causa, nè far nulla per gli uomini. | 63 And the fire sent from above to consume mountains and woods does what it is ordered. But these idols are not to be compared with them in appearance or power. |
| 64 Sapendo dunque che non sono dèi non li vogliate temere. | 64 Therefore one must not think that they are gods nor call them gods, for they are not able either to decide a case or to do good to men. |
| 65 Ai re non possono infliggere maledizioni, nè dar benedizioni | 65 Since you know then that they are not gods, do not fear them. |
| 66 nè mai fanno comparire portenti in cielo, neppure spandono lume, come fa il sole, nè rischiarano come la luna. | 66 For they can neither curse nor bless kings; |
| 67 Le bestie sono da più di loro, che almeno possono rifugiarsi sotto un tetto e provvedere alle proprie necessità. | 67 they cannot show signs in the heavens and among the nations, or shine like the sun or give light like the moon. |
| 68 In nessuna maniera dunque ci offrono delle prove manifeste di essere dèi: quindi non li vogliate temere. | 68 The wild beasts are better than they are, for they can flee to cover and help themselves. |
| 69 Insomma, come uno spauracchio in mezzo ad un orto non preserva nulla, così i loro dèi di legno, d'argento e d'oro. | 69 So we have no evidence whatever that they are gods; therefore do not fear them. |
| 70 In un orto, un biancospino sul quale si posa qualunque uccello, è com'essi. Come un cadavere gettato nelle tenebre, tali sono i loro dèi di legno, d'argento e d'oro. | 70 Like a scarecrow in a cucumber bed, that guards nothing, so are their gods of wood, overlaid with gold and silver. |
| 71 Dalla porpora e dallo scarlatto intarmati che stanno su di essi, accertatevi pure che non sono dèi. Anch'essi alla fine saranno consumati, lasciando al loro paese l'ignominia. | 71 In the same way, their gods of wood, overlaid with gold and silver, and like a thorn bush in a garden, on which every bird sits; or like a dead body cast out in the darkness. |
| 72 Val meglio l'uomo giusto che non ha simulacri, perchè così starà lontano dalla confusione». | 72 By the purple and linen that rot upon them you will know that they are not gods; and they will finally themselves be consumed, and be a reproach in the land. |
| 73 Better therefore is a just man who has no idols, for he will be far from reproach. |
