LXXNEW JERUSALEM
Ἦσαν δὲ ἐν Ἀντιοχείᾳ κατὰ τὴν οὖσαν ἐκκλησίαν προφῆται καὶ διδάσκαλοι ὅ τε Βαρναβᾶς καὶ Συμεὼν ὁ καλούμενος Νίγερ καὶ Λούκιος ὁ Κυρηναῖος, Μαναήν τε Ἡρῴδου τοῦ τετραάρχου σύντροφος καὶ Σαῦλος.1 In the church at Antioch the following were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon cal ed Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen, who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
Λειτουργούντων δὲ αὐτῶν τῷ κυρίῳ καὶ νηστευόντων εἶπεν τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον· ἀφορίσατε δή μοι τὸν Βαρναβᾶν καὶ Σαῦλον εἰς τὸ ἔργον ὃ προσκέκλημαι αὐτούς.2 One day while they were offering worship to the Lord and keeping a fast, the Holy Spirit said, 'I wantBarnabas and Saul set apart for the work to which I have cal ed them.'
τότε νηστεύσαντες καὶ προσευξάμενοι καὶ ἐπιθέντες τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῖς ἀπέλυσαν.3 So it was that after fasting and prayer they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
Αὐτοὶ μὲν οὖν ἐκπεμφθέντες ὑπὸ τοῦ ἁγίου πνεύματος κατῆλθον εἰς Σελεύκειαν, ἐκεῖθέν τε ἀπέπλευσαν εἰς Κύπρον4 So these two, sent on their mission by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and from there set sail forCyprus.
εἶχον δὲ καὶ Ἰωάννην ὑπηρέτην.5 They landed at Salamis and proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews; John acted astheir assistant.
Διελθόντες δὲ ὅλην τὴν νῆσον ἄχρι Πάφου εὗρον ἄνδρα τινὰ μάγον ψευδοπροφήτην Ἰουδαῖον ᾧ ὄνομα Βαριησοῦ6 They travel ed the whole length of the island, and at Paphos they came in contact with a Jewishmagician and false prophet cal ed Bar-Jesus.
οὗτος προσκαλεσάμενος Βαρναβᾶν καὶ Σαῦλον ἐπεζήτησεν ἀκοῦσαι τὸν λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ.7 He was one of the attendants of the proconsul Sergius Paulus, who was an extremely intelligent man.The proconsul summoned Barnabas and Saul and asked to hear the word of God,
ἀνθίστατο δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἐλύμας ὁ μάγος, οὕτως γὰρ μεθερμηνεύεται τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ, ζητῶν διαστρέψαι τὸν ἀνθύπατον ἀπὸ τῆς πίστεως.8 but Elymas the magician (this is what his name means in Greek) tried to stop them so as to prevent theproconsul's conversion to the faith.
Σαῦλος δέ, ὁ καὶ Παῦλος, πλησθεὶς πνεύματος ἁγίου ἀτενίσας εἰς αὐτὸν9 Then Saul, whose other name is Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked at him intently
εἶπεν· ὦ πλήρης παντὸς δόλου καὶ πάσης ῥᾳδιουργίας, υἱὲ διαβόλου, ἐχθρὲ πάσης δικαιοσύνης, οὐ παύσῃ διαστρέφων τὰς ὁδοὺς [τοῦ] κυρίου τὰς εὐθείας;10 and said, 'You utter fraud, you impostor, you son of the devil, you enemy of al uprightness, will younot stop twisting the straightforward ways of the Lord?
παραχρῆμά τε ἔπεσεν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ἀχλὺς καὶ σκότος καὶ περιάγων ἐζήτει χειραγωγούς.11 Now watch how the hand of the Lord wil strike you: you wil be blind, and for a time you wil not seethe sun.' That instant, everything went misty and dark for him, and he groped about to find someone to lead himby the hand.
τότε ἰδὼν ὁ ἀνθύπατος τὸ γεγονὸς ἐπίστευσεν ἐκπλησσόμενος ἐπὶ τῇ διδαχῇ τοῦ κυρίου.12 The proconsul, who had watched everything, became a believer, being much struck by what he hadlearnt about the Lord.
Ἀναχθέντες δὲ ἀπὸ τῆς Πάφου οἱ περὶ Παῦλον ἦλθον εἰς Πέργην τῆς Παμφυλίας, Ἰωάννης δὲ ἀποχωρήσας ἀπ’ αὐτῶν ὑπέστρεψεν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα.13 Paul and his companions went by sea from Paphos to Perga in Pamphylia where John left them to goback to Jerusalem.
Αὐτοὶ δὲ διελθόντες ἀπὸ τῆς Πέργης παρεγένοντο εἰς Ἀντιόχειαν τὴν Πισιδίαν, καὶ [εἰσ]ελθόντες εἰς τὴν συναγωγὴν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῶν σαββάτων ἐκάθισαν.14 The others carried on from Perga til they reached Antioch in Pisidia. Here they went to synagogue onthe Sabbath and took their seats.
μετὰ δὲ τὴν ἀνάγνωσιν τοῦ νόμου καὶ τῶν προφητῶν ἀπέστειλαν οἱ ἀρχισυνάγωγοι πρὸς αὐτοὺς λέγοντες· ἄνδρες ἀδελφοί, εἴ τίς ἐστιν ἐν ὑμῖν λόγος παρακλήσεως πρὸς τὸν λαόν, λέγετε.15 After the passages from the Law and the Prophets had been read, the presidents of the synagoguesent them a message, 'Brothers, if you would like to address some words of encouragement to the congregation, please do so.'
Ἀναστὰς δὲ Παῦλος καὶ κατασείσας τῇ χειρὶ εἶπεν· ἄνδρες Ἰσραηλῖται καὶ οἱ φοβούμενοι τὸν θεόν, ἀκούσατε.16 Paul stood up, raised his hand for silence and began to speak: 'Men of Israel, and fearers of God,listen!
ὁ θεὸς τοῦ λαοῦ τούτου Ἰσραὴλ ἐξελέξατο τοὺς πατέρας ἡμῶν καὶ τὸν λαὸν ὕψωσεν ἐν τῇ παροικίᾳ ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτου καὶ μετὰ βραχίονος ὑψηλοῦ ἐξήγαγεν αὐτοὺς ἐξ αὐτῆς,17 The God of our nation Israel chose our ancestors and made our people great when they were living inEgypt, a land not their own; then by divine power he led them out
καὶ ὡς τεσσερακονταετῆ χρόνον ἐτροποφόρησεν αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ18 and for about forty years took care of them in the desert.
καὶ καθελὼν ἔθνη ἑπτὰ ἐν γῇ Χανάαν κατεκληρονόμησεν τὴν γῆν αὐτῶν19 When he had destroyed seven nations in Canaan, he put them in possession of their land
καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἔδωκεν κριτὰς ἕως Σαμουὴλ [τοῦ] προφήτου.20 for about four hundred and fifty years. After this he gave them judges, down to the prophet Samuel.
κἀκεῖθεν ᾐτήσαντο βασιλέα καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ὁ θεὸς τὸν Σαοὺλ υἱὸν Κίς, ἄνδρα ἐκ φυλῆς Βενιαμίν, ἔτη τεσσεράκοντα,21 Then they demanded a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin. After forty years,
καὶ μεταστήσας αὐτὸν ἤγειρεν τὸν Δαυὶδ αὐτοῖς εἰς βασιλέα ᾧ καὶ εἶπεν μαρτυρήσας· εὗρον Δαυὶδ τὸν τοῦ Ἰεσσαί, ἄνδρα κατὰ τὴν καρδίαν μου, ὃς ποιήσει πάντα τὰ θελήματά μου.22 he deposed him and raised up David to be king, whom he attested in these words, "I have foundDavid son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who wil perform my entire wil ."
τούτου ὁ θεὸς ἀπὸ τοῦ σπέρματος κατ’ ἐπαγγελίαν ἤγαγεν τῷ Ἰσραὴλ σωτῆρα Ἰησοῦν,23 To keep his promise, God has raised up for Israel one of David's descendants, Jesus, as Saviour,
προκηρύξαντος Ἰωάννου πρὸ προσώπου τῆς εἰσόδου αὐτοῦ βάπτισμα μετανοίας παντὶ τῷ λαῷ Ἰσραήλ.24 whose coming was heralded by John when he proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the wholepeople of Israel.
ὡς δὲ ἐπλήρου Ἰωάννης τὸν δρόμον, ἔλεγεν· τί ἐμὲ ὑπονοεῖτε εἶναι; οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐγώ· ἀλλ’ ἰδοὺ ἔρχεται μετ’ ἐμὲ οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἄξιος τὸ ὑπόδημα τῶν ποδῶν λῦσαι.25 Before John ended his course he said, "I am not the one you imagine me to be; there is someonecoming after me whose sandal I am not fit to undo."
Ἄνδρες ἀδελφοί, υἱοὶ γένους Ἀβραὰμ καὶ οἱ ἐν ὑμῖν φοβούμενοι τὸν θεόν, ἡμῖν ὁ λόγος τῆς σωτηρίας ταύτης ἐξαπεστάλη.26 'My brothers, sons of Abraham's race, and al you godfearers, this message of salvation is meant foryou.
οἱ γὰρ κατοικοῦντες ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες αὐτῶν τοῦτον ἀγνοήσαντες καὶ τὰς φωνὰς τῶν προφητῶν τὰς κατὰ πᾶν σάββατον ἀναγινωσκομένας κρίναντες ἐπλήρωσαν,27 What the people of Jerusalem and their rulers did, though they did not realise it, was in f
καὶ μηδεμίαν αἰτίαν θανάτου εὑρόντες ᾐτήσαντο Πιλᾶτον ἀναιρεθῆναι αὐτόν.28 Though they found nothing to justify his execution, they condemned him and asked Pilate to have himput to death.
ὡς δὲ ἐτέλεσαν πάντα τὰ περὶ αὐτοῦ γεγραμμένα, καθελόντες ἀπὸ τοῦ ξύλου ἔθηκαν εἰς μνημεῖον.29 When they had carried out everything that scripture foretells about him they took him down from thetree and buried him in a tomb.
ὁ δὲ θεὸς ἤγειρεν αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν,30 But God raised him from the dead,
ὃς ὤφθη ἐπὶ ἡμέρας πλείους τοῖς συναναβᾶσιν αὐτῷ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ, οἵτινες [νῦν] εἰσιν μάρτυρες αὐτοῦ πρὸς τὸν λαόν.31 and for many days he appeared to those who had accompanied him from Galilee to Jerusalem: and itis these same companions of his who are now his witnesses before our people.
Καὶ ἡμεῖς ὑμᾶς εὐαγγελιζόμεθα τὴν πρὸς τοὺς πατέρας ἐπαγγελίαν γενομένην,32 'We have come here to tel you the good news that the promise made to our ancestors has comeabout.
God has fulfil ed it to their children by raising Jesus from the dead. As scripture says in the psalms: You are my son: today I have fathered you.
ὅτι δὲ ἀνέστησεν αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν μηκέτι μέλλοντα ὑποστρέφειν εἰς διαφθοράν, οὕτως εἴρηκεν ὅτι δώσω ὑμῖν τὰ ὅσια Δαυὶδ τὰ πιστά.34 The fact that God raised him from the dead, never to return to corruption, is no more than what hehad declared: To you I shal give the holy things promised to David which can be relied upon.
διότι καὶ ἐν ἑτέρῳ λέγει· οὐ δώσεις τὸν ὅσιόν σου ἰδεῖν διαφθοράν.35 This is also why it says in another text: You wil not al ow your Holy One to see corruption.
Δαυὶδ μὲν γὰρ ἰδίᾳ γενεᾷ ὑπηρετήσας τῇ τοῦ θεοῦ βουλῇ ἐκοιμήθη καὶ προσετέθη πρὸς τοὺς πατέρας αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶδεν διαφθοράν·36 Now when David in his own time had served God's purposes he died; he was buried with hisancestors and has certainly seen corruption.
ὃν δὲ ὁ θεὸς ἤγειρεν, οὐκ εἶδεν διαφθοράν.37 The one whom God has raised up, however, has not seen corruption.
γνωστὸν οὖν ἔστω ὑμῖν, ἄνδρες ἀδελφοί, ὅτι διὰ τούτου ὑμῖν ἄφεσις ἁμαρτιῶν καταγγέλλεται, [καὶ] ἀπὸ πάντων ὧν οὐκ ἠδυνήθητε ἐν νόμῳ Μωϋσέως δικαιωθῆναι,38 'My brothers, I want you to realise that it is through him that forgiveness of sins is being proclaimed toyou. Through him justification from al sins from which the Law of Moses was unable to justify
ἐν τούτῳ πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων δικαιοῦται.39 is being offered to every believer.
βλέπετε οὖν μὴ ἐπέλθῃ τὸ εἰρημένον ἐν τοῖς προφήταις·40 'So be careful -- or what the prophets say wil happen to you.
Cast your eyes around you, mockers; be amazed, and perish! For I am doing something in your owndays that you would never believe if you were told of it.'
Ἐξιόντων δὲ αὐτῶν παρεκάλουν εἰς τὸ μεταξὺ σάββατον λαληθῆναι αὐτοῖς τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα.42 As they left they were urged to continue this preaching the fol owing Sabbath.
λυθείσης δὲ τῆς συναγωγῆς ἠκολούθησαν πολλοὶ τῶν Ἰουδαίων καὶ τῶν σεβομένων προσηλύτων τῷ Παύλῳ καὶ τῷ Βαρναβᾷ, οἵτινες προσλαλοῦντες αὐτοῖς ἔπειθον αὐτοὺς προσμένειν τῇ χάριτι τοῦ θεοῦ.43 When the meeting broke up many Jews and devout converts fol owed Paul and Barnabas, and in theirtalks with them Paul and Barnabas urged them to remain faithful to the grace God had given them.
Τῷ δὲ ἐρχομένῳ σαββάτῳ σχεδὸν πᾶσα ἡ πόλις συνήχθη ἀκοῦσαι τὸν λόγον τοῦ κυρίου.44 The next Sabbath almost the whole town assembled to hear the word of God.
ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι τοὺς ὄχλους ἐπλήσθησαν ζήλου καὶ ἀντέλεγον τοῖς ὑπὸ Παύλου λαλουμένοις βλασφημοῦντες.45 When they saw the crowds, the Jews, fil ed with jealousy, used blasphemies to contradict everythingPaul said.
'We had to proclaim the word of God to you first, butsince you have rejected it, since you do not think yourselves worthy of eternal life, here and now we turn to thegentiles.
For this is what the Lord commanded us to do when he said: I have made you a light to the nations,so that my salvation may reach the remotest parts of the earth.'
Ἀκούοντα δὲ τὰ ἔθνη ἔχαιρον καὶ ἐδόξαζον τὸν λόγον τοῦ κυρίου καὶ ἐπίστευσαν ὅσοι ἦσαν τεταγμένοι εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον·48 It made the gentiles very happy to hear this and they gave thanks to the Lord for his message; all whowere destined for eternal life became believers.
διεφέρετο δὲ ὁ λόγος τοῦ κυρίου δι’ ὅλης τῆς χώρας.49 Thus the word of the Lord spread through the whole countryside.
οἱ δὲ Ἰουδαῖοι παρώτρυναν τὰς σεβομένας γυναῖκας τὰς εὐσχήμονας καὶ τοὺς πρώτους τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἐπήγειραν διωγμὸν ἐπὶ τὸν Παῦλον καὶ Βαρναβᾶν καὶ ἐξέβαλον αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ τῶν ὁρίων αὐτῶν.50 But the Jews worked on some of the devout women of the upper classes and the leading men of thecity; they stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas and expel ed them from their territory.
οἱ δὲ ἐκτιναξάμενοι τὸν κονιορτὸν τῶν ποδῶν ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς ἦλθον εἰς Ἰκόνιον,51 So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and went off to Iconium; but theconverts were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.
