κρεισσων ψωμος μεθ' ηδονης εν ειρηνη η οικος πληρης πολλων αγαθων και αδικων θυματων μετα μαχης1 A dry morsel with gladness is better than a house full of sacrifices along with conflict.
οικετης νοημων κρατησει δεσποτων αφρονων εν δε αδελφοις διελειται μερη2 A wise servant shall rule over foolish sons, and he will divide the inheritance among brothers.
ωσπερ δοκιμαζεται εν καμινω αργυρος και χρυσος ουτως εκλεκται καρδιαι παρα κυριω3 Just as silver is tested by fire, and gold is tested in the furnace, so also does the Lord test hearts.
κακος υπακουει γλωσσης παρανομων δικαιος δε ου προσεχει χειλεσιν ψευδεσιν4 The evil obey an unjust tongue. And the false are submissive to lying lips.
ο καταγελων πτωχου παροξυνει τον ποιησαντα αυτον ο δε επιχαιρων απολλυμενω ουκ αθωωθησεται ο δε επισπλαγχνιζομενος ελεηθησεται5 Whoever despises the poor rebukes his Maker. And whoever rejoices in the ruin of another will not go unpunished.
στεφανος γεροντων τεκνα τεκνων καυχημα δε τεκνων πατερες αυτων [6α] του πιστου ολος ο κοσμος των χρηματων του δε απιστου ουδε οβολος6 Sons of sons are the crown of old age. And the glory of sons is their fathers.
ουχ αρμοσει αφρονι χειλη πιστα ουδε δικαιω χειλη ψευδη7 Well-chosen words are not fitting for the foolish, nor are lying lips fitting for a leader.
μισθος χαριτων η παιδεια τοις χρωμενοις ου δ' αν επιστρεψη ευοδωθησεται8 The expectation of those who stand ready is a most pleasing jewel. Whichever way he turns himself, he understands prudently.
ος κρυπτει αδικηματα ζητει φιλιαν ος δε μισει κρυπτειν διιστησιν φιλους και οικειους9 Whoever conceals an offense seeks friendships. Whoever repeats the words of another separates allies.
συντριβει απειλη καρδιαν φρονιμου αφρων δε μαστιγωθεις ουκ αισθανεται10 A correction benefits more with a wise man, than a hundred stripes with a fool.
αντιλογιας εγειρει πας κακος ο δε κυριος αγγελον ανελεημονα εκπεμψει αυτω11 The evil one continually seeks conflicts. But a cruel Angel shall be sent against him.
εμπεσειται μεριμνα ανδρι νοημονι οι δε αφρονες διαλογιουνται κακα12 It is more expedient to meet a bear robbed of her young, than the foolish trusting in his own folly.
ος αποδιδωσιν κακα αντι αγαθων ου κινηθησεται κακα εκ του οικου αυτου13 Whoever repays evil for good, evil shall not withdraw from his house.
εξουσιαν διδωσιν λογοις αρχη δικαιοσυνης προηγειται δε της ενδειας στασις και μαχη14 Whoever releases the water is the head of the conflict. And just before he suffers contempt, he abandons judgment.
ος δικαιον κρινει τον αδικον αδικον δε τον δικαιον ακαθαρτος και βδελυκτος παρα θεω15 Those who justify the impious, and those who condemn the just, both are abominable with God.
ινα τι υπηρξεν χρηματα αφρονι κτησασθαι γαρ σοφιαν ακαρδιος ου δυνησεται [16α] ος υψηλον ποιει τον εαυτου οικον ζητει συντριβην ο δε σκολιαζων του μαθειν εμπεσειται εις κακα16 What does it profit the foolish to have riches, when he is not able to buy wisdom? Whoever makes his house high seeks ruin. And whoever shuns learning shall fall into evils.
εις παντα καιρον φιλος υπαρχετω σοι αδελφοι δε εν αναγκαις χρησιμοι εστωσαν τουτου γαρ χαριν γεννωνται17 Whoever is a friend loves at all times. And a brother is proved by distress.
ανηρ αφρων επικροτει και επιχαιρει εαυτω ως και ο εγγυωμενος εγγυη τον εαυτου φιλον18 A foolish man will clap his hands, when he makes a pledge for his friend.
φιλαμαρτημων χαιρει μαχαις19 Whoever dwells on discord loves disputes. And whoever exalts his door seeks ruin.
ο δε σκληροκαρδιος ου συναντα αγαθοις ανηρ ευμεταβολος γλωσση εμπεσειται εις κακα20 Whoever is of a perverse heart shall not find good. And whoever turns his tongue shall fall into evil.
καρδια δε αφρονος οδυνη τω κεκτημενω αυτην ουκ ευφραινεται πατηρ επι υιω απαιδευτω υιος δε φρονιμος ευφραινει μητερα αυτου21 A foolish one is born into his own disgrace. But his father will not rejoice in one who is senseless.
καρδια ευφραινομενη ευεκτειν ποιει ανδρος δε λυπηρου ξηραινεται τα οστα22 A joyful soul makes a lifetime flourish. A gloomy spirit dries out the bones.
λαμβανοντος δωρα εν κολπω αδικως ου κατευοδουνται οδοι ασεβης δε εκκλινει οδους δικαιοσυνης23 The impious receives gifts from the bosom, so that he may pervert the paths of judgment.
προσωπον συνετον ανδρος σοφου οι δε οφθαλμοι του αφρονος επ' ακρα γης24 Prudence shines from the face of the wise. The eyes of the foolish are on the ends of the earth.
οργη πατρι υιος αφρων και οδυνη τη τεκουση αυτου25 A foolish son is the anger of the father and the grief of the mother who conceived him.
ζημιουν ανδρα δικαιον ου καλον ουδε οσιον επιβουλευειν δυνασταις δικαιοις26 It is not good to inflict damage on the just, nor to strike the leader who judges uprightly.
ος φειδεται ρημα προεσθαι σκληρον επιγνωμων μακροθυμος δε ανηρ φρονιμος27 Whoever moderates his words is learned and prudent. And a man of learning has a precious spirit.
ανοητω επερωτησαντι σοφιαν σοφια λογισθησεται ενεον δε τις εαυτον ποιησας δοξει φρονιμος ειναι28 If he would remain silent, even the foolish would be considered wise, and if he closes his lips, intelligent.
