BIBBIA CEI 2008	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Queste sono le nazioni che il Signore risparmiò allo scopo di mettere alla prova Israele per mezzo loro, cioè quanti non avevano visto le guerre di Canaan.	1 These are the nations which Yahweh al owed to remain, by their means to put all those Israelites to thetest who had not experienced any of the Canaanite wars
2 Ciò avvenne soltanto per l'istruzione delle nuove generazioni degli Israeliti, perché imparassero la guerra, quelli, per lo meno, che prima non l'avevano mai vista:	2 (this was only to instruct the Israelites' descendants, to teach them the art of war, those at least whohad not experienced it previously):
3 i cinque capi dei Filistei, tutti i Cananei, quei di Sidòne e gli Evei, che abitavano le montagne del Libano, dal monte Baal-Ermon fino all'ingresso di Amat.	3 the five chiefs of the Philistines, al the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hittites who lived in therange of the Lebanon, from the uplands of Baal-Hermon to the Pass of Hamath.
4 Queste nazioni servirono a mettere Israele alla prova per vedere se Israele avrebbe obbedito ai comandi, che il Signore aveva dati ai loro padri per mezzo di Mosè.	4 They were used to put Israel to the test and see if they would keep the orders which Yahweh had giventheir ancestors through Moses.
5 Così gli Israeliti abitarono in mezzo ai Cananei, agli Hittiti, agli Amorrei, ai Perizziti, agli Evei e ai Gebusei;	5 The Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites and Amorites, the Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites;
6 presero in mogli le figlie di essi, maritarono le proprie figlie con i loro figli e servirono i loro dèi.	6 they married their daughters, they gave their own sons to their daughters and they served their gods.
7 Gli Israeliti fecero ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore; dimenticarono il Signore loro Dio e servirono i Baal e le Asere.	7 The Israelites did what is evil in Yahweh's eyes. They forgot Yahweh their God and served Baals andAsherahs.
8 Perciò l'ira del Signore si accese contro Israele e li mise nelle mani di Cusan-Risataim, re del Paese dei due fiumi; gli Israeliti furono servi di Cusan-Risataim per otto anni.	8 Then Yahweh's anger blazed out against Israel: he handed them over to Cushan-Rishathaim king ofEdom, and the Israelites were enslaved to Cushan-Rishathaim for eight years.
9 Poi gli Israeliti gridarono al Signore, e il Signore suscitò loro un liberatore, Otniel, figlio di Kenaz, fratello minore di Caleb, ed egli li liberò.	9 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh and Yahweh raised for the Israelites a deliverer who rescued them,Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.
10 Lo spirito del Signore fu su di lui ed egli fu giudice d'Israele; uscì a combattere e il Signore gli diede nelle mani Cusan-Risataim, re di Aram; la sua mano fu potente contro Cusan-Risataim.	10 The spirit of Yahweh was on him; he became judge in Israel and set out for war. Yahweh deliveredCushan-Rishathaim king of Edom into his hands, and he triumphed over Cushan- Rishathaim.
11 Il paese rimase in pace per quarant'anni, poi Otniel, figlio di Kenaz, morì.	11 The country then had peace for forty years. Othniel son of Kenaz then died.
12 Gli Israeliti ripresero a fare ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore; il Signore rese forte Eglon, re di Moab, contro Israele, perché facevano ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore.	12 Again the Israelites began doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes, and Yahweh strengthened Eglon kingof Moab against Israel, since they were doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes.
13 Eglon radunò intorno a sé gli Ammoniti e gli Amaleciti, fece una spedizione contro Israele, lo batté e si impadronì della città delle Palme.	13 Eglon in conjunction with the sons of Ammon and Amalek marched on Israel, beat them and capturedthe City of Palm Trees.
14 Gli Israeliti furono schiavi di Eglon, re di Moab, per diciotto anni.	14 The Israelites were enslaved to Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years.
15 Poi gridarono al Signore ed egli suscitò loro un liberatore, Eud, figlio di Ghera, Beniaminita, che era mancino. Gli Israeliti mandarono per mezzo di lui un tributo a Eglon re di Moab.	15 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised a deliverer for them, Ehud son of Gera, aBenjaminite; he was left-handed. The Israelites appointed him to take their tribute to Eglon king of Moab.
16 Eud si fece una spada a due tagli, lunga un 'gomed', e se la cinse sotto la veste, al fianco destro.	16 Ehud made himself a dagger -- it was double-edged and a foot long -- and strapped it under hisclothes on his right thigh.
17 Poi presentò il tributo a Eglon, re di Moab, che era uomo molto grasso.	17 He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. This Eglon was a very fat man.
18 Finita la presentazione del tributo, ripartì con la gente che l'aveva portato.	18 Having presented the tribute, Ehud sent away the men who had been carrying it;
19 Ma egli, dal luogo detto Idoli, che è presso Gàlgala, tornò indietro e disse: "O re, ho una cosa da dirti in segreto". Il re disse: "Silenzio!" e quanti stavano con lui uscirono.	19 but he himself, on reaching the Idols which are near Gilgal, went back and said, 'I have a secretmessage for you, O king.' The king commanded silence, and al his attendants withdrew.
20 Allora Eud si accostò al re che stava seduto nel piano di sopra, riservato a lui solo, per la frescura, e gli disse: "Ho una parola da dirti da parte di Dio". Quegli si alzò dal suo seggio.	20 Ehud went up to him; he was sitting in his private room upstairs, where it was cool. Ehud said to him, 'Ihave a message from God for you, O king.' The latter immediately rose from his seat.
21 Allora Eud, allungata la mano sinistra, trasse la spada dal suo fianco e gliela piantò nel ventre.	21 Then Ehud, reaching with his left hand, drew the dagger he was carrying on his right thigh and thrust itinto the king's belly.
22 Anche l'elsa entrò con la lama; il grasso si rinchiuse intorno alla lama, perciò egli uscì subito dalla finestra, senza estrargli la spada dal ventre.	22 The hilt too went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, since Ehud did not pul thedagger out of his bel y again.
23 Eud uscì nel portico, dopo aver chiuso i battenti del piano di sopra e aver tirato il chiavistello.	23 Ehud went out through the privies, having shut and bolted the doors of the upstairs room behind him.
24 Quando fu uscito, vennero i servi, i quali guardarono e videro che i battenti del piano di sopra erano sprangati; dissero: "Certo attende ai suoi bisogni nel camerino della stanza fresca".	24 When he had gone, the servants came back and looked; the doors of the upstairs room were bolted.They thought, 'He is probably covering his feet in the inner part of the cool room.'
25 Aspettarono fino ad essere inquieti, ma quegli non apriva i battenti del piano di sopra. Allora presero la chiave, aprirono ed ecco il loro signore era steso per terra, morto.	25 They waited until they became embarrassed, but stil he did not open the doors of the upstairs room.Eventual y, they took the key and opened the door; and there lay their master, dead, on the ground.
26 Mentre essi indugiavano, Eud era fuggito e, dopo aver oltrepassato gli Idoli, si era messo in salvo nella Seira.	26 Meanwhile, Ehud had got away, passed the Idols and made good his escape to safety in Seirah.
27 Appena arrivato là, suonò la tromba sulle montagne di Efraim e gli Israeliti scesero con lui dalle montagne ed egli si mise alla loro testa.	27 Once there, he sounded the horn in the highlands of Ephraim, and the Israelites came down from thehil s with him at their head.
28 Disse loro: "Seguitemi, perché il Signore vi ha messo nelle mani i Moabiti, vostri nemici". Quelli scesero dopo di lui, si impadronirono dei guadi del Giordano, per impedirne il passo ai Moabiti, e non lasciarono passare nessuno.	28 And he said to them, 'Follow me, because Yahweh has delivered your enemy Moab into your hands.'So they followed him, seized the fords of the Jordan against Moab and al owed no one to cross.
29 In quella circostanza sconfissero circa diecimila Moabiti, tutti robusti e valorosi; non ne scampò neppure uno.	29 On that occasion they beat the Moabites, some ten thousand men, all tough and seasoned fighters,and not one escaped.
30 Così in quel giorno Moab fu umiliato sotto la mano d'Israele e il paese rimase tranquillo per ottant'anni.	30 That day Moab was humbled under the hand of Israel, and the country had peace for eighty years.
31 Dopo di lui ci fu Samgar figlio di Anat. Egli sconfisse seicento Filistei con un pungolo da buoi; anch'egli salvò Israele.	31 After him came Shamgar son of Anath. He routed six hundred of the Philistines with an ox-goad; hetoo was a deliverer of Israel.
