1 Allontanate dunque ogni genere di cattiveria e di frode, ipocrisie, gelosie e ogni maldicenza.	1 Therefore, set aside all malice and all deceitfulness, as well as falseness and envy and every detraction.
2 Come bambini appena nati desiderate avidamente il genuino latte spirituale, grazie al quale voi possiate crescere verso la salvezza,	2 Like newborn infants, desire the milk of reasonableness without guile, so that by this you may increase unto salvation,
3 se davvero avete gustato che buono è il Signore.	3 if it is true that you have tasted that the Lord is sweet.
4 Avvicinandovi a lui, pietra viva, rifiutata dagli uomini ma scelta e preziosa davanti a Dio,	4 And approaching him as if he were a living stone, rejected by men, certainly, but elect and honored by God,
5 quali pietre vive siete costruiti anche voi come edificio spirituale, per un sacerdozio santo e per offrire sacrifici spirituali graditi a Dio, mediante Gesù Cristo.	5 be also yourselves like living stones, built upon him, a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, so as to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6 Si legge infatti nella Scrittura: Ecco, io pongo in Sion una pietra d’angolo, scelta, preziosa, e chi crede in essa non resterà deluso.	6 Because of this, Scripture asserts: “Behold, I am setting in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious. And whoever will have believed in him will not be confounded.”
7 Onore dunque a voi che credete; ma per quelli che non credono la pietra che i costruttori hanno scartato è diventata pietra d’angolo	7 Therefore, to you who believe, he is honor. But to those who do not believe, the stone which the builders have rejected, the same has been made into the head of the corner,
8 e sasso d’inciampo, pietra di scandalo. Essi v’inciampano perché non obbediscono alla Parola. A questo erano destinati.	8 and a stone of offense, and a rock of scandal, to those who are offended by the Word; neither do they believe, though they also have been built upon him.
9 Voi invece siete stirpe eletta, sacerdozio regale, nazione santa, popolo che Dio si è acquistato perché proclami le opere ammirevoli di lui, che vi ha chiamato dalle tenebre alla sua luce meravigliosa.	9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, an acquired people, so that you may announce the virtues of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
10 Un tempo voi eravate non-popolo, ora invece siete popolo di Dio; un tempo eravate esclusi dalla misericordia, ora invece avete ottenuto misericordia.	10 Though in past times you were not a people, yet now you are the people of God. Though you had not obtained mercy, yet now you have obtained mercy.
11 Carissimi, io vi esorto come stranieri e pellegrini ad astenervi dai cattivi desideri della carne, che fanno guerra all’anima.	11 Most beloved, I beg you, as new arrivals and sojourners, to abstain from carnal desires, which battle against the soul.
12 Tenete una condotta esemplare fra i pagani perché, mentre vi calunniano come malfattori, al vedere le vostre buone opere diano gloria a Dio nel giorno della sua visita.	12 Keep your behavior among the Gentiles to what is good, so that, when they slander you as if you were evildoers, they may, by the good works that are seen in you, glorify God on the day of visitation.
13 Vivete sottomessi ad ogni umana autorità per amore del Signore: sia al re come sovrano,	13 Therefore, be subject to every human creature because of God, whether it is to the king as preeminent,
14 sia ai governatori come inviati da lui per punire i malfattori e premiare quelli che fanno il bene.	14 or to leaders as having been sent from him for vindication over evildoers, it is truly for the praise of what is good.
15 Perché questa è la volontà di Dio: che, operando il bene, voi chiudiate la bocca all’ignoranza degli stolti,	15 For such is the will of God, that by doing good you may bring about the silence of imprudent and ignorant men,
16 come uomini liberi, servendovi della libertà non come di un velo per coprire la malizia, ma come servi di Dio.	16 in an open manner, and not as if cloaking malice with liberty, but like servants of God.
17 Onorate tutti, amate i vostri fratelli, temete Dio, onorate il re.	17 Honor everyone. Love brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.
18 Domestici, state sottomessi con profondo rispetto ai vostri padroni, non solo a quelli buoni e miti, ma anche a quelli prepotenti.	18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and meek, but also to the unruly.
19 Questa è grazia: subire afflizioni, soffrendo ingiustamente a causa della conoscenza di Dio;	19 For this is grace: when, because of God, a man willingly endures sorrows, suffering injustice.
20 che gloria sarebbe, infatti, sopportare di essere percossi quando si è colpevoli? Ma se, facendo il bene, sopporterete con pazienza la sofferenza, ciò sarà gradito davanti a Dio.	20 For what glory is there, if you sin and then suffer a beating? But if you do well and suffer patiently, this is grace with God.
21 A questo infatti siete stati chiamati, perché anche Cristo patì per voi, lasciandovi un esempio, perché ne seguiate le orme:	21 For you have been called to this because Christ also suffered for us, leaving you an example, so that you would follow in his footsteps.
22 egli non commise peccato e non si trovò inganno sulla sua bocca;	22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth.
23 insultato, non rispondeva con insulti, maltrattato, non minacciava vendetta, ma si affidava a colui che giudica con giustizia.	23 And when evil was spoken against him, he did not speak evil. When he suffered, he did not threaten. Then he handed himself over to him who judged him unjustly.
24 Egli portò i nostri peccati nel suo corpo sul legno della croce, perché, non vivendo più per il peccato, vivessimo per la giustizia; dalle sue piaghe siete stati guariti.	24 He himself bore our sins in his body upon the tree, so that we, having died to sin, would live for justice. By his wounds, you have been healed.
25 Eravate erranti come pecore, ma ora siete stati ricondotti al pastore e custode delle vostre anime.	25 For you were like wandering sheep. But now you have been turned back toward the Pastor and the Bishop of your souls.
