Prima lettera di Pietro 2

1 Allontanate dunque ogni genere di cattiveria e di frode, ipocrisie, gelosie e ogni maldicenza.	1 Rid yourselves, then, of al spite, deceit, hypocrisy, envy and carping criticism.
2 Come bambini appena nati desiderate avidamente il genuino latte spirituale, grazie al quale voi possiate crescere verso la salvezza,	2 Like new-born babies al your longing should be for milk -- the unadulterated spiritual milk -- which willhelp you to grow up to salvation,
3 se davvero avete gustato che buono è il Signore.	3 at any rate if you have tasted that the Lord is good .
4 Avvicinandovi a lui, pietra viva, rifiutata dagli uomini ma scelta e preziosa davanti a Dio,	4 He is the living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen by God and precious to him; set yourselvesclose to him
5 quali pietre vive siete costruiti anche voi come edificio spirituale, per un sacerdozio santo e per offrire sacrifici spirituali graditi a Dio, mediante Gesù Cristo.	5 so that you, too, may be living stones making a spiritual house as a holy priesthood to offer the spiritualsacrifices made acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6 Si legge infatti nella Scrittura: Ecco, io pongo in Sion una pietra d’angolo, scelta, preziosa, e chi crede in essa non resterà deluso.	6 As scripture says: Now I am laying a stone in Zion, a chosen, precious cornerstone and no one whorelies on this wil be brought to disgrace.
7 Onore dunque a voi che credete; ma per quelli che non credono la pietra che i costruttori hanno scartato è diventata pietra d’angolo	7 To you believers it brings honour. But for unbelievers, it is rather a stone which the builders rejectedthat became a cornerstone,
8 e sasso d’inciampo, pietra di scandalo. Essi v’inciampano perché non obbediscono alla Parola. A questo erano destinati.	8 a stumbling stone, a rock to trip people up. They stumble over it because they do not believe in theWord; it was the fate in store for them.
9 Voi invece siete stirpe eletta, sacerdozio regale, nazione santa, popolo che Dio si è acquistato perché proclami le opere ammirevoli di lui, che vi ha chiamato dalle tenebre alla sua luce meravigliosa.	9 But you are a chosen race, a kingdom of priests, a holy nation, a people to be a personal possession tosing the praises of God who cal ed you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.
10 Un tempo voi eravate non-popolo, ora invece siete popolo di Dio; un tempo eravate esclusi dalla misericordia, ora invece avete ottenuto misericordia.	10 Once you were a non-people and now you are the People of God; once you were outside his pity; nowyou have received pity.
11 Carissimi, io vi esorto come stranieri e pellegrini ad astenervi dai cattivi desideri della carne, che fanno guerra all’anima.	11 I urge you, my dear friends, as strangers and nomads, to keep yourselves free from the disorderednatural inclinations that attack the soul.
12 Tenete una condotta esemplare fra i pagani perché, mentre vi calunniano come malfattori, al vedere le vostre buone opere diano gloria a Dio nel giorno della sua visita.	12 Always behave honourably among gentiles so that they can see for themselves what moral lives youlead, and when the day of reckoning comes, give thanks to God for the things which now make them denounceyou as criminals.
13 Vivete sottomessi ad ogni umana autorità per amore del Signore: sia al re come sovrano,	13 For the sake of the Lord, accept the authority of every human institution: the emperor, as the supremeauthority,
14 sia ai governatori come inviati da lui per punire i malfattori e premiare quelli che fanno il bene.	14 and the governors as commissioned by him to punish criminals and praise those who do good.
15 Perché questa è la volontà di Dio: che, operando il bene, voi chiudiate la bocca all’ignoranza degli stolti,	15 It is God's will that by your good deeds you should silence the ignorant talk of fools.
16 come uomini liberi, servendovi della libertà non come di un velo per coprire la malizia, ma come servi di Dio.	16 You are slaves of no one except God, so behave like free people, and never use your freedom as acover for wickedness.
17 Onorate tutti, amate i vostri fratelli, temete Dio, onorate il re.	17 Have respect for everyone and love for your fel ow-believers; fear God and honour the emperor.
18 Domestici, state sottomessi con profondo rispetto ai vostri padroni, non solo a quelli buoni e miti, ma anche a quelli prepotenti.	18 Slaves, you should obey your masters respectful y, not only those who are kind and reasonable butalso those who are difficult to please.
19 Questa è grazia: subire afflizioni, soffrendo ingiustamente a causa della conoscenza di Dio;	19 You see, there is merit if, in awareness of God, you put up with the pains of undeserved punishment;
20 che gloria sarebbe, infatti, sopportare di essere percossi quando si è colpevoli? Ma se, facendo il bene, sopporterete con pazienza la sofferenza, ciò sarà gradito davanti a Dio.	20 but what glory is there in putting up with a beating after you have done something wrong? The merit inthe sight of God is in putting up with it patiently when you are punished for doing your duty.
21 A questo infatti siete stati chiamati, perché anche Cristo patì per voi, lasciandovi un esempio, perché ne seguiate le orme:	21 This, in fact, is what you were called to do, because Christ suffered for you and left an example for youto fol ow in his steps.
22 egli non commise peccato e non si trovò inganno sulla sua bocca;	22 He had done nothing wrong, and had spoken no deceit.
23 insultato, non rispondeva con insulti, maltrattato, non minacciava vendetta, ma si affidava a colui che giudica con giustizia.	23 He was insulted and did not retaliate with insults; when he was suffering he made no threats but puthis trust in the upright judge.
24 Egli portò i nostri peccati nel suo corpo sul legno della croce, perché, non vivendo più per il peccato, vivessimo per la giustizia; dalle sue piaghe siete stati guariti.	24 He was bearing our sins in his own body on the cross, so that we might die to our sins and live foruprightness; through his bruises you have been healed.
25 Eravate erranti come pecore, ma ora siete stati ricondotti al pastore e custode delle vostre anime.	25 You had gone astray like sheep but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of yoursouls.
