1 (Alef) Come si è annerito l’oro, come si è alterato l’oro migliore! Sono disperse le pietre sante all’angolo di ogni strada.	1 How the gold has tarnished, how the fine gold has changed! The sacred stones lie scattered at thecorner of every street.
2 (Bet) I preziosi figli di Sion, valutati come oro fino, come sono stimati quali vasi di creta, lavoro delle mani di vasaio!	2 The children of Zion, as precious as finest gold -- to think that they should now be reckoned likecrockery made by a potter!
3 (Ghimel) Persino gli sciacalli porgono le mammelle e allattano i loro cuccioli, ma la figlia del mio popolo è divenuta crudele come gli struzzi nel deserto.	3 The very jackals give the breast, and suckle their young: but the daughter of my people is as cruel asthe ostriches of the desert.
4 (Dalet) La lingua del lattante si è attaccata al palato per la sete; i bambini chiedevano il pane e non c’era chi lo spezzasse loro.	4 The tongue of the baby at the breast sticks to its palate for thirst; little children ask for bread, no onegives them any.
5 (He) Coloro che si cibavano di leccornie languiscono lungo le strade; coloro che erano allevati sulla porpora abbracciano letame.	5 Those who used to eat only the best, now lie dying in the streets; those who were reared in the purpleclaw at the rubbish heaps,
6 (Vau) Grande è stata l’iniquità della figlia del mio popolo, più del peccato di Sòdoma, la quale fu distrutta in un attimo, senza fatica di mani.	6 for the wickedness of the daughter of my people exceeded the sins of Sodom, which was overthrown ina moment without a hand being laid on it.
7 (Zain) I suoi giovani erano più splendenti della neve, più candidi del latte; avevano il corpo più roseo dei coralli, era zaffìro la loro figura.	7 Once her young people were brighter than snow, whiter than milk; rosier than coral their bodies, theirhue like sapphire.
8 (Het) Ora il loro aspetto s’è fatto più scuro della fuliggine, non si riconoscono più per le strade; si è raggrinzita la loro pelle sulle ossa, è divenuta secca come legno.	8 Now their faces are blacker than soot, they are not recognised in the streets, the skin has shrunk overtheir bones, as dry as a stick.
9 (Tet) Più fortunati gli uccisi di spada che i morti per fame, caduti estenuati per mancanza dei prodotti del campo.	9 Happier those killed by the sword than those kil ed by famine: they waste away, sunken for lack of thefruits of the earth.
10 (Iod) Mani di donne, già inclini a pietà, hanno cotto i loro bambini, che sono divenuti loro cibo nel disastro della figlia del mio popolo.	10 With their own hands, kindly women cooked their children; this was their food when the daughter ofmy people was ruined.
11 (Caf) Il Signore ha esaurito la sua collera, ha rovesciato l’ira ardente; ha acceso in Sion un fuoco che ha divorato le sue fondamenta.	11 Yahweh indulged his fury, he vented his fierce anger, he lit a fire in Zion which devoured herfoundations.
12 (Lamed) Non credevano i re della terra e tutti gli abitanti del mondo che l’avversario e il nemico sarebbero penetrati entro le porte di Gerusalemme.	12 The kings of the earth never believed, nor did any of the inhabitants of the world, that foe or enemywould ever penetrate the gates of Jerusalem.
13 (Mem) Fu per i peccati dei suoi profeti, per le iniquità dei suoi sacerdoti, che versarono in mezzo ad essa il sangue dei giusti.	13 Owing to the sins of her prophets and the crimes of her priests, who had shed the blood of the upright,in the heart of the city,
14 (Nun) Costoro vagavano come ciechi per le strade, insozzati di sangue, e non si potevano neppure toccare le loro vesti.	14 they wandered blindly through the streets, polluted with blood, so that no one dared to touch theirclothes.
15 (Samec) «Scostatevi! Un impuro!», si gridava per loro, «Scostatevi! Non toccate!». Fuggivano e andavano randagi tra le genti, non potevano trovare dimora.	15 'Keep away! Unclean!' people shouted, 'Keep away! Keep away! Don't touch!' If they left and fled tothe nations, they were not al owed to stay there either.
16 (Pe) La faccia del Signore li ha dispersi, egli non continuerà più a guardarli; non si è avuto riguardo dei sacerdoti, non si è usata pietà agli anziani.	16 The face of Yahweh destroyed them, he wil look on them no more. There was no respect for thepriests, no deference for the elders.
17 (Ain) Ancora si consumavano i nostri occhi, in cerca di un vano soccorso. Dal nostro osservatorio scrutavamo verso una nazione che non poteva salvarci.	17 Continual y we were wearing out our eyes, watching for help -- in vain. From our towers we watchedfor a nation which could not save us anyway.
18 (Sade) Hanno spiato i nostri passi, impedendoci di andare per le nostre piazze. Prossima è la nostra fine, sono compiuti i nostri giorni! Certo, è arrivata la nostra fine.	18 Men dogged our steps, to keep us out of our streets. Our end was near, our days were done, our endhad come.
19 (Kof) I nostri inseguitori erano più veloci delle aquile del cielo; sui monti ci hanno inseguiti, nel deserto ci hanno teso agguati.	19 Our pursuers were swifter than eagles in the sky; they hounded our steps through the mountains, theylay in ambush for us in the wilds.
20 (Res) Il soffio delle nostre narici, il consacrato del Signore, è stato preso in un agguato, lui, di cui dicevamo: «Alla sua ombra vivremo fra le nazioni».	20 The breath of our nostrils, Yahweh's anointed, was caught in their traps, he of whom we said, 'In hisshadow we shall live among the nations.'
21 (Sin) Esulta pure, gioisci, figlia di Edom, che abiti nella terra di Us; anche a te arriverà il calice, ti inebrierai ed esporrai la tua nudità.	21 Rejoice, exult, daughter of Edom, you who reside in Uz! To you in turn the cup wil pass; you wil getdrunk and strip yourself naked!
22 (Tau) È completa la tua punizione, figlia di Sion, egli non ti manderà più in esilio; ma punirà la tua iniquità, figlia di Edom, svelerà i tuoi peccati.	22 Your wickedness is atoned for, daughter of Zion, he will never banish you again. But your wickedness,daughter of Edom, wil he punish, your sins he will lay bare!
