1 (Alef) Come si è annerito l’oro, come si è alterato l’oro migliore! Sono disperse le pietre sante all’angolo di ogni strada.	1 How tarnished is the gold, how changed the noble metal; How the sacred stones lie strewn at every street corner!
2 (Bet) I preziosi figli di Sion, valutati come oro fino, come sono stimati quali vasi di creta, lavoro delle mani di vasaio!	2 Zion's precious sons, fine gold their counterpart, Now worth no more than earthen jars made by the hands of a potter!
3 (Ghimel) Persino gli sciacalli porgono le mammelle e allattano i loro cuccioli, ma la figlia del mio popolo è divenuta crudele come gli struzzi nel deserto.	3 Even the jackals bare their breasts and suckle their young; The daughter of my people has become as cruel as the ostrich in the desert.
4 (Dalet) La lingua del lattante si è attaccata al palato per la sete; i bambini chiedevano il pane e non c’era chi lo spezzasse loro.	4 The tongue of the suckling cleaves to the roof of its mouth in thirst; The babes cry for food, but there is no one to give it to them.
5 (He) Coloro che si cibavano di leccornie languiscono lungo le strade; coloro che erano allevati sulla porpora abbracciano letame.	5 Those accustomed to dainty food perish in the streets; Those brought up in purple now cling to the ash heaps.
6 (Vau) Grande è stata l’iniquità della figlia del mio popolo, più del peccato di Sòdoma, la quale fu distrutta in un attimo, senza fatica di mani.	6 The punishment of the daughter of my people is greater than the penalty of Sodom, Which was overthrown in an instant without the turning of a hand.
7 (Zain) I suoi giovani erano più splendenti della neve, più candidi del latte; avevano il corpo più roseo dei coralli, era zaffìro la loro figura.	7 Brighter than snow were her princes, whiter than milk, More ruddy than coral, more precious than sapphire.
8 (Het) Ora il loro aspetto s’è fatto più scuro della fuliggine, non si riconoscono più per le strade; si è raggrinzita la loro pelle sulle ossa, è divenuta secca come legno.	8 Now their appearance is blacker than soot, they are unrecognized on the streets; Their skin shrinks on their bones, as dry as wood.
9 (Tet) Più fortunati gli uccisi di spada che i morti per fame, caduti estenuati per mancanza dei prodotti del campo.	9 Better for those who perish by the sword than for those who die of hunger, Who waste away, as though pierced through, lacking the fruits of the field!
10 (Iod) Mani di donne, già inclini a pietà, hanno cotto i loro bambini, che sono divenuti loro cibo nel disastro della figlia del mio popolo.	10 The hands of compassionate women boiled their own children, To serve them as mourners' food in the downfall of the daughter of my people.
11 (Caf) Il Signore ha esaurito la sua collera, ha rovesciato l’ira ardente; ha acceso in Sion un fuoco che ha divorato le sue fondamenta.	11 The LORD has spent his anger, poured out his blazing wrath; He has kindled a fire in Zion that has consumed her foundations.
12 (Lamed) Non credevano i re della terra e tutti gli abitanti del mondo che l’avversario e il nemico sarebbero penetrati entro le porte di Gerusalemme.	12 The kings of the earth did not believe, nor any of the world's inhabitants, That enemy or foe could enter the gates of Jerusalem.
13 (Mem) Fu per i peccati dei suoi profeti, per le iniquità dei suoi sacerdoti, che versarono in mezzo ad essa il sangue dei giusti.	13 Because of the sins of her prophets and the crimes of her priests, Who shed in her midst the blood of the just!--
14 (Nun) Costoro vagavano come ciechi per le strade, insozzati di sangue, e non si potevano neppure toccare le loro vesti.	14 They staggered blindly in the streets, soiled with blood, So that people could not touch even their garments:
15 (Samec) «Scostatevi! Un impuro!», si gridava per loro, «Scostatevi! Non toccate!». Fuggivano e andavano randagi tra le genti, non potevano trovare dimora.	15 "Away you unclean!" they cried to them, "Away, away, do not draw near!" If they left and wandered among the nations, nowhere could they remain.
16 (Pe) La faccia del Signore li ha dispersi, egli non continuerà più a guardarli; non si è avuto riguardo dei sacerdoti, non si è usata pietà agli anziani.	16 The LORD himself has dispersed them, he regards them no more; He does not receive the priests with favor, nor show kindness to the elders.
17 (Ain) Ancora si consumavano i nostri occhi, in cerca di un vano soccorso. Dal nostro osservatorio scrutavamo verso una nazione che non poteva salvarci.	17 Our eyes ever wasted away, looking in vain for aid; From our watchtower we watched for a nation that could not save us.
18 (Sade) Hanno spiato i nostri passi, impedendoci di andare per le nostre piazze. Prossima è la nostra fine, sono compiuti i nostri giorni! Certo, è arrivata la nostra fine.	18 Men dogged our steps so that we could not walk in our streets; Our end drew near, and came; our time had expired.
19 (Kof) I nostri inseguitori erano più veloci delle aquile del cielo; sui monti ci hanno inseguiti, nel deserto ci hanno teso agguati.	19 Our pursuers were swifter than eagles in the air, They harassed us on the mountains and waylaid us in the desert.
20 (Res) Il soffio delle nostre narici, il consacrato del Signore, è stato preso in un agguato, lui, di cui dicevamo: «Alla sua ombra vivremo fra le nazioni».	20 The anointed one of the LORD, our breath of life, was caught in their snares, He in whose shadow we thought we could live on among the nations.
21 (Sin) Esulta pure, gioisci, figlia di Edom, che abiti nella terra di Us; anche a te arriverà il calice, ti inebrierai ed esporrai la tua nudità.	21 Though you rejoice and are glad, O daughter Edom, you who dwell in the land of Uz, To you also shall the cup be passed; you shall become drunk and naked.
22 (Tau) È completa la tua punizione, figlia di Sion, egli non ti manderà più in esilio; ma punirà la tua iniquità, figlia di Edom, svelerà i tuoi peccati.	22 Your chastisement is completed, O daughter Zion, he will not prolong your exile; But your wickedness, O daughter Edom, he will punish, he will lay bare your sins.
