BIBBIA CEI 2008	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Io dicevo fra me: «Vieni, dunque, voglio metterti alla prova con la gioia. Gusta il piacere!». Ma ecco, anche questo è vanità.	1 I thought to myself, 'Very wel , I wil try pleasure and see what enjoyment has to offer.' And this wasfutile too.
2 Del riso ho detto: «Follia!» e della gioia: «A che giova?».	2 This laughter, I reflected, is a madness, this pleasure no use at al .
3 Ho voluto fare un’esperienza: allietare il mio corpo con il vino e così afferrare la follia, pur dedicandomi con la mente alla sapienza. Volevo scoprire se c’è qualche bene per gli uomini che essi possano realizzare sotto il cielo durante i pochi giorni della loro vita.	3 I decided to hand my body over to drinking wine, my mind still guiding me in wisdom; I resolved toembrace folly, to discover the best way for people to spend their days under the sun.
4 Ho intrapreso grandi opere, mi sono fabbricato case, mi sono piantato vigneti.	4 I worked on a grand scale: built myself palaces, planted vineyards;
5 Mi sono fatto parchi e giardini e vi ho piantato alberi da frutto d’ogni specie;	5 made myself gardens and orchards, planting every kind of fruit tree in them;
6 mi sono fatto vasche per irrigare con l’acqua quelle piantagioni in crescita.	6 had pools made for watering the young trees of my plantations.
7 Ho acquistato schiavi e schiave e altri ne ho avuti nati in casa; ho posseduto anche armenti e greggi in gran numero, più di tutti i miei predecessori a Gerusalemme.	7 I bought slaves, male and female, had home-born slaves as wel ; herds and flocks I had too, more thananyone in Jerusalem before me.
8 Ho accumulato per me anche argento e oro, ricchezze di re e di province. Mi sono procurato cantori e cantatrici, insieme con molte donne, delizie degli uomini.	8 I amassed silver and gold, the treasures of kings and provinces; acquired singers, men and women,and every human luxury, chest upon chest of it.
9 Sono divenuto più ricco e più potente di tutti i miei predecessori a Gerusalemme, pur conservando la mia sapienza.	9 So I grew great, greater than anyone in Jerusalem before me; nor did my wisdom leave me.
10 Non ho negato ai miei occhi nulla di ciò che bramavano, né ho rifiutato alcuna soddisfazione al mio cuore, che godeva d’ogni mia fatica: questa è stata la parte che ho ricavato da tutte le mie fatiche.	10 I denied my eyes nothing that they desired, refused my heart no pleasure, for I found all my hard worka pleasure, such was the return for al my efforts.
11 Ho considerato tutte le opere fatte dalle mie mani e tutta la fatica che avevo affrontato per realizzarle. Ed ecco: tutto è vanità e un correre dietro al vento. Non c’è alcun guadagno sotto il sole.	11 I then reflected on al that my hands had achieved and all the effort I had put into its achieving. Whatfutility it al was, what chasing after the wind! There is nothing to be gained under the sun.
12 Ho considerato che cos’è la sapienza, la stoltezza e la follia: «Che cosa farà il successore del re? Quello che hanno fatto prima di lui».	12 My reflections then turned to wisdom, stupidity and fol y. For instance, what can the successor of aking do? What has been done already.
13 Mi sono accorto che il vantaggio della sapienza sulla stoltezza è come il vantaggio della luce sulle tenebre:	13 More is to be gained from wisdom than from fol y, just as one gains more from light than fromdarkness; this, of course, I see:
14 il saggio ha gli occhi in fronte, ma lo stolto cammina nel buio. Eppure io so che un’unica sorte è riservata a tutti e due.	14 The wise have their eyes open, the fool walks in the dark. No doubt! But I know, too, that one fateawaits them both.
15 Allora ho pensato: «Anche a me toccherà la sorte dello stolto! Perché allora ho cercato d’essere saggio? Dov’è il vantaggio?». E ho concluso che anche questo è vanità.	15 'Since the fool's fate', I thought to myself, 'will be my fate too, what is the point of my having beenwise?' I realised that this too is futile.
16 Infatti, né del saggio né dello stolto resterà un ricordo duraturo e nei giorni futuri tutto sarà dimenticato. Allo stesso modo muoiono il saggio e lo stolto.	16 For there is no lasting memory for the wise or the fool, and in the days to come both will be forgotten;the wise, no less than the fool, must die.
17 Allora presi in odio la vita, perché mi era insopportabile quello che si fa sotto il sole. Tutto infatti è vanità e un correre dietro al vento.	17 Life I have come to hate, for what is done under the sun disgusts me, since al is futility and chasingafter the wind.
18 Ho preso in odio ogni lavoro che con fatica ho compiuto sotto il sole, perché dovrò lasciarlo al mio successore.	18 All I have toiled for under the sun and now bequeath to my successor I have come to hate;
19 E chi sa se questi sarà saggio o stolto? Eppure potrà disporre di tutto il mio lavoro, in cui ho speso fatiche e intelligenza sotto il sole. Anche questo è vanità!	19 who knows whether he wil be wise or a fool? Yet he wil be master of al the work into which I have putmy efforts and wisdom under the sun. That is futile too.
20 Sono giunto al punto di disperare in cuor mio per tutta la fatica che avevo sostenuto sotto il sole,	20 I have come to despair of all the efforts I have expended under the sun.
21 perché chi ha lavorato con sapienza, con scienza e con successo dovrà poi lasciare la sua parte a un altro che non vi ha per nulla faticato. Anche questo è vanità e un grande male.	21 For here is one who has laboured wisely, skilfully and successful y and must leave what is his own tosomeone who has not toiled for it at al . This is futile too, and grossly unjust;
22 Infatti, quale profitto viene all’uomo da tutta la sua fatica e dalle preoccupazioni del suo cuore, con cui si affanna sotto il sole?	22 for what does he gain for al the toil and strain that he has undergone under the sun-
23 Tutti i suoi giorni non sono che dolori e fastidi penosi; neppure di notte il suo cuore riposa. Anche questo è vanità!	23 since his days are ful of sorrow, his work is ful of stress and even at night he has no peace of mind?This is futile too.
24 Non c’è di meglio per l’uomo che mangiare e bere e godersi il frutto delle sue fatiche; mi sono accorto che anche questo viene dalle mani di Dio.	24 There is no happiness except in eating and drinking, and in enjoying one's achievements; and I seethat this too comes from God's hand;
25 Difatti, chi può mangiare o godere senza di lui?	25 for who would get anything to eat or drink, unless al this came from him?
26 Egli concede a chi gli è gradito sapienza, scienza e gioia, mentre a chi fallisce dà la pena di raccogliere e di ammassare, per darlo poi a colui che è gradito a Dio. Ma anche questo è vanità e un correre dietro al vento!	26 Wisdom, knowledge and joy, God gives to those who please him, but on the sinner he lays the task ofgathering and storing up for someone else who is pleasing to him. This too is futility and chasing after the wind.
