1 In quel giorno Tobi si ricordò del denaro che aveva depositato presso Gabaèl a Rage di Media	1 The same day Tobit remembered the silver that he had left with Gabael at Rhages in Media
2 e disse in cuor suo: «Ecco che io ho invocato la morte: perché dunque non dovrei chiamare mio figlio Tobia e informarlo, prima di morire, di questa somma di denaro?».	2 and thought, 'I have come to the point of praying for death; I should do wel to cal my son Tobias andtel him about the money before I die.'
3 Chiamò il figlio e gli disse: «Figlio, quando morirò, dovrai darmi una sepoltura decorosa; onora tua madre e non abbandonarla per tutti i giorni della sua vita; fa’ ciò che è di suo gradimento e non procurarle nessun motivo di tristezza.	3 He summoned his son Tobias and told him, 'When I die, give me an honourable burial. Honour yourmother, and never abandon her al the days of your life. Do al that she wants, and give her no reason for sorrow.
4 Ricòrdati, figlio, che ha corso tanti pericoli per te, quando eri nel suo seno. Quando morirà, dovrai darle sepoltura presso di me, in una medesima tomba.	4 Remember, my child, al the risks she ran for your sake when you were in her womb. And when shedies, bury her at my side in the same grave.
5 Ogni giorno, o figlio, ricòrdati del Signore; non peccare né trasgredire i suoi comandamenti. Compi opere buone in tutti i giorni della tua vita e non metterti per la strada dell’ingiustizia.	5 'My child, be faithful to the Lord all your days. Never entertain the wil to sin or to transgress his laws.Do good works all the days of your life, never fol ow ways that are not upright;
6 Perché se agirai con rettitudine, avrai fortuna nelle tue azioni.	6 for if you act in truthfulness, you wil be successful in al your actions, as everyone is who practises whatis upright.
7 A tutti quelli che praticano la giustizia fa’ elemosina con i tuoi beni e, nel fare elemosina, il tuo occhio non abbia rimpianti. Non distogliere lo sguardo da ogni povero e Dio non distoglierà da te il suo.	7 'Set aside part of your goods for almsgiving. Never turn your face from the poor and God will never turnhis from you.
8 In proporzione a quanto possiedi fa’ elemosina, secondo le tue disponibilità; se hai poco, non esitare a fare elemosina secondo quel poco.	8 Measure your alms by what you have; if you have much, give more; if you have little, do not be afraid togive less in alms.
9 Così ti preparerai un bel tesoro per il giorno del bisogno,	9 So doing, you wil lay up for yourself a great treasure for the day of necessity.
10 poiché l’elemosina libera dalla morte e impedisce di entrare nelle tenebre.	10 For almsgiving delivers from death and saves people from passing down to darkness.
11 Infatti per tutti quelli che la compiono, l’elemosina è un dono prezioso davanti all’Altissimo.	11 Almsgiving is a most effective offering for all those who do it in the presence of the Most High.
12 Guàrdati, o figlio, da ogni sorta di fornicazione; prenditi anzitutto una moglie dalla stirpe dei tuoi padri, non prendere una donna straniera, che cioè non sia della stirpe di tuo padre, perché noi siamo figli di profeti. Ricòrdati di Noè, di Abramo, di Isacco e di Giacobbe, nostri padri fin da principio. Essi sposarono tutti una donna della loro parentela e furono benedetti nei loro figli e la loro discendenza avrà in eredità la terra.	12 'My child, avoid al loose conduct. Choose a wife of your father's stock. Do not take a foreign wifeoutside your father's tribe, because we are the children of the prophets. Remember Noah, Abraham, Isaac andJacob, our ancestors from the beginning. Al of them took wives from their own kindred, and they were blessed intheir children, and their race wil inherit the earth.
13 E ora, figlio, ama i tuoi fratelli; nel tuo cuore non concepire disprezzo per i tuoi fratelli, e per i figli e le figlie del tuo popolo, e tra loro scegliti la moglie. L’orgoglio infatti è causa di rovina e di grande inquietudine. Nella pigrizia vi è povertà e miseria, perché la pigrizia è madre della fame.	13 You, too, my child, must love your own brothers; never presume to despise your brothers, the sonsand daughters of your people; choose your wife from among them. For pride brings ruin and much worry;idleness causes need and poverty, for the mother of famine is idleness.
14 Non trattenere presso di te la paga di chi lavora per te, ma a lui consegnala subito; se così avrai servito Dio, ti sarà data la ricompensa. Poni attenzione, o figlio, a tutto ciò che fai e sii ben educato in ogni tuo comportamento.	14 'Do not keep back until next day the wages of those who work for you; pay them at once. If you serveGod you will be rewarded. Be careful, my child, in al you do, wel -disciplined in al your behaviour.
15 Non fare a nessuno ciò che non piace a te. Non bere vino fino all’ebbrezza e non avere per compagna del tuo viaggio l’ubriachezza.	15 Do to no one what you would not want done to you. Do not drink wine to the point of drunkenness; donot let excess be your travel ing companion.
16 Da’ del tuo pane a chi ha fame e fa’ parte dei tuoi vestiti agli ignudi. Da’ in elemosina quanto ti avanza e quando fai elemosina il tuo occhio non abbia rimpianti.	16 'Give your bread to those who are hungry, and your clothes to those who lack clothing. Of whateveryou own in plenty, devote a proportion to almsgiving; and when you give alms, do it ungrudgingly.
17 Deponi il tuo pane sulla tomba dei giusti, non darne invece ai peccatori.	17 Be generous with bread and wine on the graves of upright people, but not for the sinner.
18 Chiedi consiglio a ogni persona che sia saggia e non disprezzare nessun buon consiglio.	18 'Ask advice of every wise person; never scorn any profitable advice.
19 In ogni circostanza benedici il Signore Dio e domanda che ti sia guida nelle tue vie e che i tuoi sentieri e i tuoi desideri giungano a buon fine, poiché nessun popolo possiede la saggezza, ma è il Signore che elargisce ogni bene e abbassa chi vuole fino al profondo degli inferi. E ora, figlio, ricòrdati di questi comandamenti, non lasciare che si cancellino dal tuo cuore.	19 Bless the Lord God in everything; beg him to guide your ways and bring your paths and purposes totheir end. For wisdom is not the property of every nation; their desire for what is good is conferred by the Lord. Athis will he lifts up or he casts down to the depths of the dwelling of the dead. So now, my child, remember theseprecepts and never let them fade from your heart.
20 Ora, figlio, ti comunico che ho depositato dieci talenti d’argento presso Gabaèl, figlio di Gabri, a Rage di Media.	20 'Now, my child, I must tell you I have left ten talents of silver with Gabael son of Gabrias, at Rhages inMedia.
21 Non temere, figlio, se siamo diventati poveri. Tu hai una grande ricchezza se avrai il timore di Dio, se rifuggirai da ogni peccato e farai ciò che piace al Signore, tuo Dio».	21 Do not be afraid, my child, if we have grown poor. You have great wealth if you fear God, if you shun every kind of sin and if you do what is pleasing to the Lord your God.'
